DATE:______________________ POWER WORKSHEET NAME:____________________

In science the term power is defined precisely. It is a measure of the rate of work, i.e. work done in 1 second.
Power is also defined as the rate of transfer of energy, i.e. energy transferred in 1 second.
Q1. Suppose a motor lifts a mass of 70 kg to a height of 20m in 4 minutes.
What is the force applied by the motor in lifting? ___________________. What is the direction of force?____________
What is the displacement?_________________. What is the direction of displacement?_________________________.
Work done = ___________________________. This much work is done in 4 minutes.
Power = work done in 1 second = ____________________________________________________________________.
Another motor lifts the same mass to the same height in 8 minutes. Work done = ______________________________.
Power = work done in 1 second = ____________________________________.
Motor 1 has a high power because it does the same amount of work in half the time as compared to motor 2.
Q2. Suppose there are 2 microwaves labelled 1000W and 2000W. The 1000W one converts 1000J of electrical energy
to heat energy in 1 second. Which one will heat the food faster, the 1000W one or the 2000W one?________________.
Q3. A builder lifts eight slabs from the ground on to the back of a lorry 1.5 m high. The total time taken is 48 s and
each slab weighs 200 N. How much useful power does the builder produce?
A 50 W B 400 W C 2400 W D 3200 W
Q4. A crane lifts a load of 6000 N through a vertical distance of 15 m in 30 s. What is the average useful power during
this operation?
A 200 W B 400 W C 3000 W D 12 000 W
Q5. A builder carrying six bricks climbs a ladder. Each brick weighs 25 N and the builder climbs a vertical distance
of 4.0 m in 8.0 s. What is the average power used to raise the bricks?
A 13 W B 75 W C 750 W D 4800 W
Q6. A small emergency generator supplies 432 000 000 J of electrical energy in twenty-four hours. What is the
average power output of the generator?
A 5000W B 300000 W C 18 000 000 W D 432 000 000 W
So, if we want to find work done by a force along an inclined displacement d, we can find work done along the
displacements a and b, and their sum will be equal to work done along d.
Q7. Suppose a man carries a box weighing 10kg from A to B, using ramps and stairs.
Draw the displacement vector on the diagram.
What is the direction of the force that the man applies on the box?
The displacement vector is equal to the sum of a displacement of 4m in the horizontal
and 3m in the vertical direction.
Work done along horizontal displacement = ______x_______x cos _______=_________
Work done along vertical displacement = __________x______x cos _______=________.
Total work done = ______________+_______________=_________________________.
From the above explanation, we can conclude whenever we have an inclined displacement carrying something,
the work done only depends upon the vertical displacement. If we are moving carrying nothing, KEEP IN MIND
we are still carrying our own weight!
Q8. A man weighs 600 N. He runs up a staircase of total height 4.0 metres in 3.0 seconds. How much useful power is
needed to do this?
A 450 W B 800 W C 2400 W D 7200 W
Q9. A girl of weight 500 N runs up a f.ight of stairs in 10 seconds. The vertical height of the stairs is 5 m.What is
the average power developed by the girl?
A 50 W B 100 W C20W D 1000 W
Q10.A boy, who weighs 50 N runs up a f.ight of stairs 6.5 m high in 7 seconds.
How much power does he develop?

Q11. Four students exercise in a gym. Which student does the most work?
