My essay will attempt to answer the question how social media effects the younger

generations use of social skills. I want to learn about the negative effects of social media in

people who are still developing, but more specifically I want to know how social media effects

people’s social skills. If it does have an effect, I want to know how big it impacts the human

brain. How does social media have an effect on social skills and even more importantly our

brains?

Hanke, Stacey. “How Social Media Affects Our Ability to Communicate.” Thrive Global, 13

Sept. 2018, thriveglobal.com/stories/how-social-media-affects-our-ability-to-

communicate/.

This article is about how the changes of technology over time has changed how we

communicate with one another. The first section discusses “information bingeing” and how

studies have shown that social media is connected to ADHD. According to the article social

media sites such as twitter limit your responses which effects how people communicate to one

another, making their responses much shorter. The end of the article also gives tips on how to

improve communication skills.

The purpose of writing this article is to show some of the basic issues of social media and

how it is starting to affect the human populations communication skills. The second purpose of
this article is to give steps to the audience to cut down on the use of digital devices. The audience

is anyone who uses social media or a digital device and wants to learn more about its effects.

The author of this piece is Stacey Hanke. I believe she is credible because she is the

founder and communication expert of Stacey Hanke Inc., and author of Influence Redefine.

Stacey Hanke is a communications and influence expert, so she has a lot of experience with one

side of this topic which makes her credible to write this article. This also makes this source more

reliable because it is written by a person with adequate information to write this article. The

article is well structured and includes headings to keep is organized, and it was also written in

2018 which is very recent and makes the information more reliable.

I plan on incorporate this article by discussing the effects social media has on people and

how it may be correlated to ADHD. I’m going to focus on the main points of the articles and the

negative effect the article mentions. I think this article brings up some good points and gives the

communication prospective.

Walton, Alice G. “New Studies Show Just How Bad Social Media Is For Mental Health.”

Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 18 Nov. 2018,

www.forbes.com/sites/alicegwalton/2018/11/16/new-research-shows-just-how-bad-social-

media-can-be-for-mental-health/#777a9007af44.

This Forbes article discusses the effects social media has on mental health, mentioning

mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, isolation, low self-esteem and

suicidality. The article touches on different studies being done on the correlation between mental

health and social media. The article brings up the acronym FOMO which stands for “fear of

missing out” and how that is a common feeling people have when using social media. The
studies both showed that using less social media leads to a decrease in feeling lonely or

depressed.

The purpose of writing the article is to show how the results of multiple studies have

shown that large amounts of time spent on social media is not good for us. The article expands

on the studies and using evidence to prove its point. The audience is anyone interested in the

effects social media has on mental health, or someone who is suffering from a mental illness and

is interested to see if social media could be the cause.

The writer of this Forbes article is Alice G. Walton who has background in healthcare and

main focuses are the brain and behavior. Walton’s background in behavioral neuroscience makes

her credible to write this article and gives her knowledgeable information to include throughout

the article. Walton also cites firsthand information from studies from the University of

Pennsylvania and York University in Canada. Walton’s use of reliable sources within the article

make this article credible.

I will use this source to give the stance on mental health when it comes to social media use.

I think this will help to answer my research question because some mental illnesses can affect a

person’s social skills.

Yavich, Roman, et al. “Social Media and Loneliness--Forever Connected?” Higher Education

Studies, vol. 9, no. 2, Jan. 2019, pp. 10–21. EBSCOhost,

search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=eric&AN=EJ1206454&site=eds-live.

In summary this study from ebscohost explores how social media and loneliness are

connected. The article discusses the possibility of social media offers a sense of social belonging

then changes to a feeling of being lonely. The article uses self-report questionnaires across Ariel
University students in Ariel, Israel. The entire article explores the association between using

social media and loneliness.

The purpose of this article is researching the association between social media usage and

loneliness. The article gives multiple perspectives with the use of three different authors. The

audience of this article is someone who is feeling lonely and thinks social media could be a

factor or is researching the topic like we are.

This article is a collaboration, meaning it has three different authors, including Roman

Yavich, Nitza Davidovitc, and Zeev Frenkel. The fact that there is more than one author makes it

that much more credible because it’s an abundance of information. The authors also all have

background in education and a college education. The studies are done at universities which

makes the information given very reliable.

I think this article will be helpful in showing the results from a university study that was

done on the correlation between social media and loneliness. This will give my research paper

insight on how loneliness connects to social skills and communication and gives factual

information.

“Study: Negative Social Media Experiences Linked to Depression.” U.S. News & World Report,

U.S. News & World Report, www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2018-06-

07/study-negative-social-media-experiences-linked-to-depression.

This article is about a study that has recently been conducted to see if social media is

connected to depression. This article really highlights negative experiences people experience on

social media and how that effects them mentally. The study done was based on students at the
University of West Virginia. The article also explains the difference between a positive and

negative experience on social media sites.

The purpose of this article is to inform people about the negative effects social media has

and why people should be more of what most of the population is using every day. The audience

of this article is anyone who wants to be more informed about the negatives of social media and

the threat of depression.

The author of this article is Tala Salem who is a staff writer for the U.S. News and World

Report. I know the author is credible because this is a well know site that is very reliable. I know

this is a reliable resource because it was written very recently so the information is current and

up to date.

All though this is another article about social media being connected to mental illnesses I

think this is important to my research question and ultimately has an impact on a person’s

communications skills. Overall, I’m going to focus on the article’s negative effects of social

media and use that in my research paper.

Brown, Jessica. “Future - Is Social Media Bad for You? The Evidence and the Unknowns.” BBC,

BBC, 5 Jan. 2018, www.bbc.com/future/story/20180104-is-social-media-bad-for-you-the-

evidence-and-the-unknowns.

This BBC article is about if social media is bad for us and what evidence is present, but

also what we don’t know about the negatives of social media. The article discusses the scientific

side of the impact social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have on the

human population. The article has a number of headings and touches on stress, mood, anxiety,

depression, sleep, addiction, self-esteem, well-being, relationships, envy, and loneliness.

The purpose of this article is to give the audience a good grip on the most common effects

of social media. This is a good site that gives basic information on a variety of topics connected

to social media. The audience is anyone who wants to be informed about the different effects of

social media.

The writer is Jessica Brown, and the article was written just over a year ago which makes

the information relatively recent and a reliable source. I know this source is reliable because it

cites surveys and information from universities such as the University of California.

I will use this article for my research especially at the introduction of my paper because it

touches on a lot of topics, I’m going to get more in depth with later in the paper so this source

will be useful to introduce topics. I think is a good article that will help me answer my research

question.

Talks, TEDx. “How Social Media Makes Us Unsocial | Allison Graham | TEDxSMU.” YouTube,

YouTube, 10 Nov. 2014, www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5GecYjy9-Q.

This is a “Ted Talk” from TEDx about how social media makes us unsocial done by

Allison Graham. The introduction of the video shows a variety of people being completely

distracted by their phones and almost sounding ridiculous. The speaker discusses how phones

and social media is not only affecting the younger generations but also the older generations.

Graham discusses three things throughout the vide including, how social media is disconnecting

us, what’s happening now, and how we can do better.

The speaker’s purpose in writing and giving this Ted Talk is to show and explain how we

are all becoming more and more unsocial by using social media. The audience is really anyone

who has or uses a smart phone or is on social media. The video was published in 2014 so some
of the information is a little outdated but the general point of the video is very current and

valuable.

The writer or speaker is Allison Graham who is a graduate at Southern Methodist

University who now works all over the country with big companies such as Universal Studios,

Paramount Pictures, Warner Brothers and even more. I think this makes the author very credible

especially because she was invited to do a Ted Talk on the topic. TEDx is a very reliable source

and respectable platform.

I will use this source throughout my research paper because it does a good job of relating

to the people and how people use their phones and social media. I think this a valuable source to

bring into my research and relates to my research question perfectly.
