01) Passed pawn (passer) :-
A pawn that, no enemy pawn can stop on its way to queening
“A passed pawn value tends increase as more and more pieces are exchange”
Ex :- White :- b5,d3,e3
Black :- a7,d7,f6,g7
02) Protected Passed pawn :-
A passed pawn is that has a pawn protecting it.
“protected passed pawns are especially valuable in king and pawn end games”
Ex :- White:- Ke2, a2,f5, g4 (white to move)
Black :- Kf6,a4, b4, g5
03) Isolated pawn :-
A pawn with no pawn of the same color on the files next to it
Ex :- White :- a3, b2, d4, f2, g2, h3
Black :- a7, b7, e6, f7, g7, h7
“ the squares in front of an isolated pawn tend to be excellent homes for your pieces “
04) Doubled pawns :-
Two pawns of the same color that are on the same file.
Ex :- white :- Kf2, b3, g4, h4
Black :- Kf8, b4, b5, h6
05) Hanging pawns :-
Two pawns of the same color that are together and don’t have any pawns of the same
color on the files next to them
Ex :- White :- Ra1, Rf1, Kg1, a2, b2, f2, g2, h2, Qc3, e3, Nf3

Black :- a7, Bb7, Qe7, f7, g7, h7, Ra8, Nb8,Rf8, Kg8, c5, d5
Here c5 and d5 are hanging pawns
06) Backward pawns :-
A pawn that trails behind a pawn of the same color of an adjacent file
Ex :- White :- a5, b4, e4
Black :- a6, d7, e5
Here b4 and d7 pawns are backward pawns
07) Candidate passed pawn :-
The pawn of a pawn majority that can produce a passed pawn and that is on half
opened file
Ex :- white :- a3, b3, Ke1, h3,
Black :- b6, Ke8, g6, h6,
“ candidate passed pawns should lead the way “
08) Fixed pawns :-
A pawn that cannot move (capture) due to an enemy pawn blocking it
Ex :- white :- a2, b3, e4, g3, h4
Black :- a5, e5, g7, h7
09) Pawn island :-
A group of pawns of one color on consecutive files with no other pawns of the same
color on any adjacent files
Ex :- white :- a4, c2, d2, e3, g2, h2, g3
Black :- a6, b7, d7, e6, e7, g7, h7
“In general, the fewer pawn islands you have the better”
10) Pawn chain :-
A fixed and connected diagonal formation of pawns is called pawn chain
Ex :- white :- Kg1, a2, b2, c3, d4, , e5, f2, g2, h3
Black :- Kg8, a7, b6, c4, d5, e6, f7, g7, h5
From white side e5 – head of the pawn chain
From white side c3 – tail of the pawn chain
From black side c4 – head of the pawn chain
From black side e6 – tail of the pawn chain
