GROWING TREES AND FRUIT-BEARING TREES

IMPORTANCE AND BENEFITS OF PLANTING TREES AND FRUIT-BEARING TREES
1. Fruits and nuts are good sources of carbohydrates (sugar and starch, fiber, vitamins, and
minerals).
2. Trees promote soil stability by protecting the soil from erosion and prevent floods.
3. Trees reduce destruction to homes and agricultural crops by serving as windbreakers during
typhoons and storm.
4. Trees improve the atmosphere of a place by giving a feeling of freshness and coolness,
reducing temperature, and decreasing pollution in congested urban areas.
5. Trees provide shade to houses, streets, parks, and playgrounds attractive.
6. Trees contribute to the beautiful landscapes in the city and countryside.
7. Trees help maintain high quality water supply.
8. Trees serve as valuable habitat for wildlife animals.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN PLANTING TREES AND FRUIT-BEARING TREES

1. CLIMATE = The most important factor affecting the growth of trees. It includes
temperature, sunlight and rainfall.
a. TEMPERATURE = refers to the degree of coldness and hotness of the atmosphere at a
certain period of time.
b. SUNLIGHT = As the main energy provider in the process of food manufacture in the
plant kingdom, sunlight influences the growth of trees though its effects on
photosynthesis, transpiration, flowering, rate of water absorption.
c. RAINFALL = Very important in the growth of all kinds of trees. Too much or too little
water may stunt their development.
2. SOIL
= Trees like other plants are also dependent on the nutrients that the soil provides.
= As primary growing medium for plants, the soil contains mineral elements necessary for
normal plant growth and development of the trees.
= Nutrients such as NITROGEN, POTASSIUM, PHOSPHOROUS, and others are being
absorbed by the roots of the tree for the plant to grow.

2 TYPES OF SOIL
MINERAL SOIL = composed of inorganic substances with varying amounts of decaying
organic matter.

ORGANIC SOIL = formed from partly decayed plant materials. The best soil for growing
trees is dry, warm, porous, loamy, and sandy.

3. WATER = Trees cannot survive without water for it forms parts of every plant cells and
tissues. Trees are very dependent on water because it serves as a solvent for the nutrients
from the soil.

4. FERTILIZER = Fertilizers are added to soil to increase its productivity.

2 TYPES OF FERTIIZERS
ORGANIC FERTILIZERS – come from compost of decayed fruits and vegetable peelings,
animal manures, and food washing.
= The use of organic fertilizers which contain a high percentage of nitrogen, phosphorous
and potassium helps in maintaining and improving the structure and fertility of the tree.

INORGANIC FERTILIZERS = made up of synthetic materials. These can be used as

substitute if organic fertilizers are not available.

ORCHARD FARMS
ORCHARD
 a piece of land where trees or shrubs are maintained for food or commercial production.
 features big gardens for aesthetic and productive purposes.
 Often concentrated near a water source.
 Orchard owners mostly concentrate on a particular species of trees or produce

TYPES OF ORCHARD FARMS

1. FRUIT ORCHARDS = These orchards include any facility that concentrates on growing
tree-bearing fruits such as papaya, mango, orange, lime, and avocado.
2. NUT ORCHARD = These orchards include facilities that produce nuts such as cashew,
pecan, walnut, almond, cacao, coconut and pine.
3. SEED ORCHARD = These orchards focus primarily on growing trees that produce seeds
sold for commercial distribution or resale purposes. They can be sold to agricultural
companies or used for food production.
OTHER TYPES OF ORCHARD
 Christmas tree farms like in Baguio or Tagaytay
 Coffee-producing farms
