THE CAUSE AND EFFECTS IN THE ACADEMIC ABSENTEEISM OF MARITIME

STUDENTS IN WESTBAY COLLEGE

Introduction

(Insert paragraph 1)

The researchers defined absenteeism by describing behavior and defined it

as "not attending the school with or without an excuse, miss some classes or

being late for class". Regardless of the reason for absence, the fact is that the

student is missing a portion of the academic process. Additionally, students who

were absent with excuse, such as students staying away from school for a long

time due to health problems, have difficulty in adapting when they return to

school and may develop a habit of absenteeism without excuse. In other words,

when" absenteeism without a legitimate reason" is removed from the scope of

the problem, the disruption in children's learning process and other problems

that may be experienced in the future should not be ignored.

Based on Timothy Keter (2013) Absenteeism in school is the habit of

staying away from school without providing a genuine or any reason for not

attending classes. Absenteeism is a truant behavior that negatively affects the

performance among students. Absenteeism can be remedied by providing

adequate co-curricular activities to students. It could be curbed by creating

of clubs and societies to keep students busy when they are out of class.

Schools should strive to have up to date learning facilities like libraries as

well as sporting facilities to make students enhance student retention.

Pehlivan (2006) said Absenteeism makes it difficult to create a solid

foundation in terms of discipline and sense of responsibility. Therefore, it

leads to problems in school and discipline habits in future work life.

Gottfried (2009) said moreover, as absenteeism increases, students

are inclined to experience psychological problems such as depression or

behavioral disorders. They may also exhibit behavioral patterns such as

becoming involved in violence inside and outside of the school, teenage

pregnancy, quitting school and acquiring harmful habits.

Robinson (2009) defined absenteeism by describing behavior and

defined it as "not attending the school with or without an excuse, miss

some classes or being late for class". Regardless of the reason for

absence, the fact is that the student is missing a portion of the academic

process. Additionally, students who were absent with excuse, such as

students staying away from school for a long time due to health problems,

have difficulty in adapting when they return to school and may develop a

habit of absenteeism without excuse. In other words, when" absenteeism

without a legitimate reason" is removed from the scope of the problem,

the disruption in children's learning process and other problems that may

be experienced in the future should not be ignored.

Galichon and Friedman (1985) express that students are absent

during class without an excuse because of boring lessons, taught in the

course not complying with the expectations of employers, dislike of the

teacher or course, taught in the course not being useful for students'

future career.

Miriam Caldwell (2019) said once you begin working, it is a different

environment from attending classes. You will often have several projects to

juggle as well as meetings to attend. Learning to manage your time with

classes and work will help you to adapt much more quickly.

It will also benefit you in learning to deal with people at work. There is a

difference between working with people in school and working with people

at your job. These skills will make adjusting to the real world outside of

college much easier.

Learning to manage your time effectively can help you do better overall.

Some students find that they do better in school when they have a job

because it means they need to carefully plan out the week to make time

to study.

Marie Anderson (2018) Students who work in high school may

stretch themselves too thin, and, as a result, grades may suffer.

According to the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development

(ASCD), in a study of more than 12,000 students in grades eight through

12, researchers Herbert Marsh and Sabina Kleitman found that as

students work more hours, their grades decline. They are also more likely

to have lower academic and career goals, including being less likely to

attend college, than their non-working counterparts. The research found

this to be true for all students, regardless of race, gender, socioeconomic

group or academic ability.

Dr. Mary Dowd (2019) said one of the biggest disadvantages of

working while studying is the stress and exhaustion you may experience.

Keeping a detailed planner and a list of prioritized tasks can help, but

that requires self-discipline and exceptional time management skills.

You may have trouble getting enough sleep. Exercising and self-care can

end up low on your priority list. You may neglect your health and end up

with mono. Getting sick will cause you to miss school and work, with

detrimental consequences.

Michael Wolfe (2017) said Part-time student are statistically less

likely to graduate than full-time students. According to a study by the

National Center for Education Statistics that examined part-time

undergraduates who began school in 1995, 73 percent had left school

without earning a degree or certificate. Among full-time students, only 28

percent had dropped out without a degree or certificate.

It will always take longer for a part-time student to graduate than for a

full-time student to complete the same course load. For example, if a full-

time student takes four classes a semester and graduates in four years, it

will take a part-time student taking half as many classes eight years. This

can result in a delay in the career advancement that a degree confers on

its recipient.

UySamphallarith (2011) said she thinks it is very hard to focus on

both studying and working. As we all know, each require a lot of time

and effort. For instance, students have a busy schedule, so how can we

focus on working? Also, if we students focus only on our work, our exam

scores will be low because we won’t be able to pay attention to our

studies. I think that we should not study while having a job at the same

time, because we may face a lot of difficulties and problems.

Petress (1996) also carried out a study on “The dilemma of

university undergraduate students attendance policies: to requires class

attendance or not”. He found that among students who claimed they were

adults and therefore could decide what behaviors were in their best

interest. The students in this study also claimed that the professor were

the vendor and be gratified to create the course group likable enough to

create a center of attention from view points of students.

Michael A. Clores (2009) School absenteeism is an alarming

problem for administrators, teachers, parents, and the society, in general,

as well as for the students, in particular. It may indicate low performance

of teachers, students’ dissatisfaction of the school’s services, or lack of or

poor academic and non-academic structures or policies that address the

problems or factors influencing or reinforcing this behavior. Parents are

financially burdened for having their children to stay longer in the school,

having to re-enroll them in subjects where they fail due to excessive

absences. The present study aimed to explore the process by which the

phenomenon of school absenteeism evolves or is experienced by the

college students. In-depth interviews of ten absentee students and the use

of editing style analysis and a method described by Colaizzi (1978)

yielded three category schemes of experience of school absenteeism: (a)

disempowering circumstances - feeling of helplessness; (b) misguided value

system - mixed up priorities; and (c) pedagogical dilemmas – unappealing

academic environments.

Linnea Wilson (2018) Education Week recently came out with an

article, "School Absences Translate to Lower Test Scores, Study Says".

One of the first comments on the article was "Really? We need a study

to show a link between absences and achievement". This is followed by

"Another obvious finding, A wise man once said that data that is easy to
gather is meaningless” And then, "Duh!" The article related the following

important findings from the study:

"Three days, if you multiply that out by nine months, is five weeks a

year," Mr. Ginsburg said. "You've got more than a quarter of the below-

basic kids who are going to miss five weeks of school a year or more,"

he said, noting that only 8 percent of students at the advanced level had

missed that much school. "That, to me, would be something that if you

are a chief state school officer or a superintendent, you might worry

about."

The study showed that being absent for three days in a month strongly

correlates with poor performance. As educators, it is important to know the

threshold. Drawing policies on school intervention regarding absenteeism

requires guiding information on where to draw the line. Policies cannot be

simply drawn out of thin air. Three days in a month, that number, a

result of research, is a useful guide for teachers and school

administrators. The study as described by the article is only an initial

analysis of the data. Ongoing research will continue to unravel further the

underlying factors that result into absenteeism. This is an important task

since this information likewise is necessary to design the interventions that

are relevant.
Among the comments on the article is an informed one and it brings us

to another website, "Attendance Works: Advancing Student Success by

Reducing Chronic Absence".

"Sure, the connection between attendance and achievement is obvious. But

do you know how many students in your district or your school are

missing 10% of the school year, the point where research shows that

absenteeism undermines academic performance? Unless you live in

Maryland, probably not. Most schools measure average daily attendance

(who shows up) and truancy (who's skipping). But they don't look at

who's missing too much school in excused and unexcused absences.

When they do, they get to some of the "why" --asthma, homelessness,

transportation problems, boredom--and they can figure out how to address

it."
