NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT’S CHAIR BY JULIANNE M.

Summer is finally here and boy did it rain a lot! I like to get out in my garden but
its been a little hard with everything so wet. Our Executive Team of Sylva, Paula,
and myself are working hard to bring you new and improved activities. We do
our planning meeting after the Thursday Lunch on the first week of the month
but this month the 4th has moved it to the 11th instead at 12:30pm. Please
bring your enthusiasm and ideas. We will consider trying new and bringing back
old ones like the jewelry class. We had a great turnout and Paula B. did a great
job with all the donations from Christine D. Everyone had so much fun creating
their own style of bracelet or necklaces, that we are doing again in July so check
the calendar. Our Billiard Team played Fellowship and beat them this time. They
beat us last time so that felt good but we all had a great time! We would like to
thank Carrie Liddel for all the groups she did for us and we wish her well as she
moves on from the BHH program. We still have Wiley every first Friday of the
month at 11am however. We enjoyed Stowes in West Haven for our out to eat in
June. We would like to thank Pam Mauttee and her team for doing a great job at
the Tom Parson’s Picnic. Despite the weather everyone had a good time there at
CVH. Thanks to MSP for all their donations to Bingo, we even shared them at one
of the dances we went to at Fellowship Place on June 17th. They were so happy
to get such nice prizes! So please let us know if you have any issues you would
like us to bring to our next big meeting with Roberta Cook and her team. The
meeting is scheduled for July 16th so bring your ideas and we will discuss them
that morning.
Thanks for all the support you have given me this past month. Losing a brother
is really hard. I miss him everyday but try to stay positive and if I am a little
crabby I am sorry. I guess it just comes out that way when you're grieving a
loved one. Oh and don’t forget to call the Warm Line if you need support. We are
available 7 days a week from 6-10pm, Monday through Thursday and Friday/
Saturdays from 6-11pm. I would also like to thank Norma T. who was a worker
for over 10 years. She recently retired from the line to focus on her health and
family. She is missed by many who call from far and wide! Thanks Norma!

Summer Holiday Safety Tips From the American Red Cross

It’s time for Fourth of July celebrations – fireworks, a backyard barbecue, maybe a trip to the beach. Whatever people have
planned, the American Red Cross wants them to enjoy their holiday and has steps they can follow to be safe
GRILLING SAFETY Every year people in this country are injured while using backyard charcoal or gas grills. Follow these
steps to safely cook up treats for the backyard barbecue:

Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use.

Never grill indoors – not in your house, camper, tent, or any enclosed area.
Make sure everyone, including the pets, stays away from the grill.
Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches, or anything that could catch fire.
Use the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill to keep the chef safe.
Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using grills.
BEACH SAFETY If someone’s visit to the shore includes swimming in the ocean, they should learn how to swim in the surf and
only swim at a lifeguarded beach, within the designated swimming area. Obey all instructions and orders from lifeguards. Other
safety tips include:

Keep alert for local weather conditions. Check to see if any warning signs or flags are posted.
Swim sober and always swim with a buddy.
Have young children and inexperienced swimmers wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
Protect the neck – don’t dive headfirst. Walk carefully into open waters.
Keep a close eye and constant attention on children and adults while at the beach. Wave action can cause someone to lose
their footing, even in shallow water.
Watch out for aquatic life. Water plants and animals may be dangerous. Avoid patches of plants and leave animals alone.
RIP CURRENTS Rip currents are responsible for deaths on our nation’s beaches every year, and for most of the rescues per-
formed by lifeguards. Any beach with breaking waves may have rip currents. Be aware of the danger of rip currents and re-
member the following:

If someone is caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until out of the current. Once free, they should turn and
swim toward shore. If they can't swim to the shore, they should float or tread water until free of the rip current and
then head toward shore.
Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Permanent rip currents often exist near these structures.
SUN PROTECTION Limit exposure to direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with
a protection factor of at least 15. Reapply sunscreen often. Remember to drink plenty of water regularly, even if not thirsty.
Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine in them. Protect the eyes by wearing sunglasses that will absorb 100 percent of UV sun-
light. Protect the feet - the sand can burn them and glass and other sharp objects can cut them.

During hot weather, watch for signs of heat stroke—hot, red skin; changes in consciousness; rapid, weak pulse; rapid, shallow
breathing. If it’s suspected someone is suffering from heat stroke:

Call 9-1-1 and move the person to a cooler place.

Quickly cool the body by applying cool, wet cloths or towels to the skin (or misting it with water) and fanning the person.
Watch for signs of breathing problems and make sure the airway is clear. Keep the person lying down.
FIREWORKS SAFETY The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals. Stay at
least 500 feet away from the show. Many states outlaw most fireworks. If someone is setting fireworks off at home, they
should follow these safety steps:

Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging.
Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution.
Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.
Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight "a dud."
Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.
Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.
Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE BY PAULA B.

Tom Parson’s Picnic at CVH in Middletown, CT. was a great time. There was
plenty of dancing and art on display with Jacques doing his how to be an artist
group. There were some great pictures painted too! We were all excited when
our dancing queen Barbara D. won the talent show at Tom Parson’s by doing
“Thriller” by Michael Jackson. They were great too with all those great raffle
prizes to win. The food was good and everyone helped each other out. We also
enjoyed a fun lunch out with Jacques and Phyllis. We drove to Stowes in West
Haven, CT. The place was busy. I enjoyed a delicious lunch of fried shrimp and
clam chowder. So try to save your money for when we go there again you
won’t regret it. We even saw our friend Mike B. there! A real treat!
The club is always busy so I think everyone can find a fun activity if you try
hard enough. Members can play billiards, Scrabble or cheer on a game show
contestant. We have a few laughs and spend time together.
PICNIC FUN AT OPTIONS IN BRANFORD
The club recently attended the Annual “OPTIONS” BBQ as part of May is
Mental Health Day back in May. We all had a jolly good time! We got to
mingle and talk with club members while we enjoyed a hot dog and
macaroni salad. We listened to the choir sing a song or two and this was
great! They really sing their hearts out! Thanks to
the OAK Committee and staff for making such a
lovely event.

TALKING WITH CARRIE LIDDEL BY PAULA B.

I have really enjoyed listening to Carrie Liddel from BHH each month. It is
very informative and her last class was about the sun and the effects that it
has on our bodies. It is also important to wear sunscreen. You do not need
50 strength. But you do need to wear sunscreen even if the sun is not as
hot. Thanks for teaching us for the past year we all really enjoyed you! Good
Luck and Good Luck!
