Congratulations! to Professor Simon Gilbody, who is a successful co-applicant on an
NIHR HTA grant looking in to screening for the risk of self harm in an adult offender population.

Simon is also involved in the REEACT trial, the largest ever trial of computer-delivered

Congratulations! to Professor Tony Kendrick, Dean of HYMS, who has won first prize in
the primary health care category of the BMA Medical Book Awards 2010. His book, ‘Primary
Care Mental Health’ ◙, co-authored by Linda Gask, Helen Lester and Robert Peveler, provides a
conceptual background and practical advice for the clinician. It was considered “a source of
informed practical advice on a wide variety of mental health issues encountered in primary care”.

HYMS Research Strategy Committee will accept funding bids up to £15,000 in a new scheme, just
introduced. Applications will be considered from any member of HYMS core academic staff.

Annual Child Mental Health Research Networking Day
is to be held at the Learning and Research Centre, York Hospital on Monday 24th January
2011. Anyone interested in child mental health research is welcome to attend this free meeting. A

in vivo Training Opportunities 2011 - training opportunity in in vivo cardiovascular and
immunology research skills, open to all interested PhD students and young postdoctoral
researchers. Both will be held in Glasgow for one week, from Monday 5 until Friday 9
September 2011. The course, travel costs and accommodation, together with PIL training are all
fully funded for up to 15 students per course. The courses are supported by a Capacity Building
Award in Integrative Mammalian Biology (IMB) funded by the BBSRC, BPS, KTN, MRC and SFC.
Selection of successful attendees for 2011 will, once again, be made on the basis of their CV, career
intentions and letter of support from their Head of Department. Feedback from previous courses,
a description of the 2011 courses, together with the application form can be downloaded from the

Introduction to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) – A one day Introduction to GCP workshop
has recently been developed by the NIHR CRN. This day is a practical training day and will require
participant involvement. This new method of GCP training has been said to be 'Entertaining,
educational, thought provoking and brilliant'! NEYNL CLRN will be delivering this programme
throughout the network. The next session is to be held on Friday 12 November in Hull, 9am

University of York Staff only: Strategic Equipment Fund
 Bids are to support capital research expenditure and as such must be in excess of £20k (this
can include groups of assets which have a collective value of £20K or above).

The expenditure must fall within the financial year 2010/11 (ie the equipment must be
purchased and paid for by 31 July 2011).

Departments are expected to make a contribution to the cost of the equipment, though in
exceptional circumstances this may be waived. However, priority will be given to bids
supported by departmental funds. Reasons for inability to match fund must be given.

Please note that funds may not be used to support an FEC shortfall.

The criteria for assessing bids will be:


 Quality of application in research terms, i.e. the demonstration that the equipment
will enable research of international quality
 Fit to departmental and University research strategy
 Evidence that the item could not be obtained through a grant application
 The number of staff who need the equipment, including in other depts
 Priority for the department and value for money, including extent of contribution
made by the department or other partners

Applications should be no more than 600 words and must include


 An outline how the criteria given above would be met
 The total cost of the bid with costings

Departments are encouraged to submit more than one bid, but please be aware that the
sums of money are limited

Academy of Medical Sciences - Daniel Turnberg UK/Middle East Travel Fellowship
Scheme 2010/2011 ◙
 The fellowship scheme aims to encourage and foster collaborations between bio-medical
researchers in the UK and the Middle East. It provides opportunities for short-term
exchange of researchers, offering them the chance to gain further research experience,
learn new techniques and to foster scientific collaboration.

Grants will be awarded to early and mid career medical researchers and bioscientists from
the UK to spend time in laboratories and hospitals in Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and the
Palestinian Territory or for researchers in those countries to come to the UK. The
Fellowship offers up to £4,000 to cover the fellow‟s travel expenses and provide a
subsistence allowance for a period of up to four weeks.

Applications should be made through the candidate‟s Heads of Department who will act as
sponsor for the applicant. The applicant should contact and obtain written support from the
institution that they hope to visit prior to submitting their application.

As part of this third round of funding the Academy is once again delighted to announce that
an additional Travel Fellowship is available specifically to applicants whose research falls
within the fields of surgical technology or surgical quality and safety. Applications are
sought from researchers working in either of these areas. This fellowship will be in addition
to those fellowships available through the main scheme.

Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 - Industrial fellowships ◙
 These are offered to selected graduates, working in British industry, who have a good first
degree in engineering, science or medicine. The awards provide: 50 per cent of the fellow's
salary, up to a limit of £21,000 per annum; university fees; overseas travel costs of up to
£3,500 per annum; an honorarium to the university of £10,000 on completion.

National Cancer Institute – Core Infrastructure and Methodological Research for
Cancer Epidemiology Cohorts ◙
 This funding is to provide targeted infrastructure support for the core functions of Cancer
Epidemiology Cohorts and methodological research. This infrastructure can serve either
