Outstanding Young Dairyman Award winner carries on a dairy tradition

influence in his life, exampling
what it means to be a dairy-

Even as a child, Andrew always
wanted to be like his dad; to

Cooper

Waukon native Garth Cooper has been growing his beef herd since he bought his first animals
at the age of 18. Cooper says he likes to buy first-calf heifers and he pasture breeds his cattle.
He plans to continue to grow his herd as finances allow, with the ultimate goal of purchasing the
Cooper farm where his dad was raised and that his grandmother currently owns.

In purchasing his own cattle,
he said he likes to buy first-calf
heifers. He pasture breeds his
cattle with bulls he has pur-
chased from Nick Echard of
Monona.
“I buy and sell most of my
cattle privately. The last two
years I’ve sold all of my heif-
ers and bull calves as feeder
calves,” he said.

Big plans
Cooper said his plans in-
clude slowly expanding his
herd as finances allow with the
ultimate goal being to purchase
the Cooper farm some day. He
said while he plans to grow his
farming operation, he plans to
always have a job off the farm
as well.
“I just think with the way the
economy is, there isn’t much
of a way for a young farmer to
make it on farming alone,” he
said.
When asked how he finds
time to work and take care of Some of the animals in the beef herd owned by Garth Cooper, a Waukon native who currently resides in Lansing, enjoy the lush

Allamakee County Cattlemen’s Association Scholarship Winners

The Allamakee County Cattlemen’s Associa-

been given annually to area graduating seniors
who answer three essay questions on beef. Pic-

the Association with the four area graduating se-

awarded scholarships by the Association in 2019.

scholarship winners Brigid Berns, Molly Brodahl,
Brandon Bieber and Nathan Helgerson, and Alla-

Ryan Collins and Tate Ryan.
Funding for the scholarships comes from a
variety of events sponsored by the Cattlemen
throughout the year. The Cattlemen host several
grillings in downtown Waukon, and at the Allama-
kee County Fair and other locations. In the fall,
the Cattlemen host a Club Calf Auction at North-
east Iowa Equity Sales Commission in Waukon,
where they sell calves to buyers throughout the
country, some as far away as Texas. In the spring,
the Cattlemen conduct a Breeding Soundness
Exam (Semen Check) for area producers. The
