Qualitative social research: historical and philosophical foundations. Design, data

Origin, history, nature and practice of political economy from primary sources. Current
models and application to the Philippines and Asia Pacific.

Theories of trade, trade policy and economic integration. Special topics include the

State, market and civil society and their interrelationships as political institutions;
introduction to Philippine political dynamics.
Theories of Development and Underdevelopment (IPE 402)
Development, political and economic aspects, theory and practice; democracy and
economic growth; culture, political process and economic institutions.

Managing Governance (IPE 415)


Theory and practice of management and organizationas applied to the public sector
(governance).

Economic History (ECO 429)


A historical analysis of economic growth and economic development using theories,
concepts, and principles of neoclassical and new institutional economics.

Public Policy Analysis (IPE 416)


Public policy, policy formulation and analysis. Political process in the adoption of
public policy.

Public Sector Economics (ECO 426)


Role of public sector in economics. Topics include the theory of public goods,
government intervention and its influence on private sector, education, state and local
public goods, taxation, redistribution and welfare policy, social insurance programs
(social security, unemployment insurance), health care policy.

Local Governance and Development


Local governance as such and in relation to economic and social development. Topics
include local organization at different levels, local development management and
finance, relationships among local governments, local autonomy and its variants.
