Chapter 1
International University
The main objective of this project stage is to design and analyze the structural
system and members of our architectural design from the previous stage. Our topic of
interest was a university design, the complex consists of two separate buildings, the
main building with four floors and the rooftop, it houses all the programs that the
school offers and another building which is mainly used for parking with one floor
above ground and three floors below ground, which categorizes it as a sub-structure, in
addition to the underground floors, the parking facility also contain an outdoor
sporting facility on the roof.
2 Goals/Objectives
As an architectural engineer, this project enables us to showcase our architectural
creativity and reflects our engineering sense and intuition. The project’s architectural
aspects were completed after the last phase as part of our Architectural Engineering
Thesis I. The purpose of this phase is to recap on all the knowledge and information
accumulated throughout our academic years as a foundation for higher studies.
Our goals of accomplishing this project include:
To understand the importance of construction codes and its role in shaping a
construction project.
To understand the construction workflow.
To design a structurally sound and safe structure.
3 Scope
The project is situated on a piece of land along the Hanoi boulevard, with a dimension
of 100m x 200m, with 200m being the depth. The lot is used for the design and
construction of a proposed university. Our design divides the parking facilities from the
main building, creating two separate facilities on the same lot.
3
In this project, the scopes are arranged as follows:
Architectural Design
o Conceptual Design
o Schematic Design
o Detailed Design
Structural Design
o Design and analysis of structural members (Column, beam, slab, shear
wall)
o

As mentioned earlier, the campus is divided into two separate facilities, the
parking at the back and the main campus building in front. To ensure that we are able
to meet the requirement by the deadline, we had to measure and study our project to
see what can be realistically achieved in the limited time. Since the parking facility
involves the study and analysis of sub-structure, based on the suggestions by our
lecturers, as well as our limited background in foundation design, we will eliminate it
from our structural analysis. Furthermore, the main building also involved using steel
components in a mainly RC based structural system, which complicates the design
procedure, since the connection between the concrete and the steel member would
need to be carefully investigated.
To sum up, the scope of our project would only include the reinforced concrete
structural design which includes beam, column, slab, and shear wall.
4 Limitations
We will not be designing stairs and the sub-structural members such as retaining wall,
footing and pile cap. Another element of the project that will not be covered is the steel
design, specifically, the design of the conference hall on the top floor (3rd floor/z4), that
contains a roof that will be made of a truss system, additionally, since the building is mainly
utilizing an RC structural system, the connection between the RC members and the steel
truss will need considerable time to investigate which is not possible with the workload
and the time available.
In all, the elements that will be excluded are:
Sub-structure
Steel Design
Stairs Design
