Homework 7: Continuous Composite Beams & Composite Slab

Q1
(a) Design the composite beam AB assuming that it is simply supported with a span
length 12m as shown in Fig. Q1a. Check the moment and shear resistances, and
determine the number of shear connectors required for the full length of the beam.

(b) Design the two-span composite beam CDE with a single span length 12m as shown
in Fig. Q1b. Assuming that there is no reinforcement at the intermediate support, check
the shear resistance at the intermediate support and the moment resistances at the
hogging and sagging moment regions. Determine the number of shear connectors
required for each span length.
The following information should be used for the above design:
Design data:
Steel: Grade S275
Concrete: C30/37 light-weight
Slab thickness hs = 150mm

thickness t = 1mm , average trough width br = 130mm

Dead Load = 11 kN/m
Imposed load = 10 kN/m
Design constrainst:
Height of steel beam must be less than 400mm.

Q4 (Examination 2011)

The section A-A of a continuous composite beam ABC consists of a UB steel section
and a C40/50 solid concrete slab as shown in Fig. Q4a. Assume beam spacing = 3m
and two shear studs per row is used

a) Design a suitable UB section of S355 steel to resist the maximum sagging

moment MEd = 1400 kNm within segment AB.
b) Based on the same UB section selected in a), design the composite section at B to
resist the factored hogging moment MEd = 1000 kNm and shear force of VEd
=350kN. Provide a sketch to show the reinforcements in the composite beam
section at B.
c) Determine the number of shear connectors for beam segments AB and BC to
satisfy the ultimate strength requirement based on the moment and shear force
diagrams shown in Fig. Q4b. Provide a sketch to indicate the spacing of shear
connectors.
State your assumptions clearly where necessary.

Sagging moment resistance of the profile deck section = 5.8 kN-m/m
Self weight of deck = 0.12kN/m2
The empirical constants are m = 130 N/mm2 and k = 0.004 N/mm2
Area of steel deck = 1448 mm2/m
Unfactored Loads
Imposed load = 5.0kN/m2
Partitions (imposed load) = 1.0kN/m2
Ceiling = 0.5kN/m2
Self weight (slab) = 2.0kN/m2
Construction load (temporary) = 1.5kN/m2 considered as imposed load
To check punching resistance, i t is assumed that a point load 7.5 kN is acting on an area
50 mm square.
