- A shield (30).
The moving element ( 7 0 ) has a permanent magnet attached to
a shaft, pivoted and rotating in two jewel bearings
(90 and 100) screwed into the bracket (110). The free
end of the shaft carries the pointer (80).
The field coils ( 5 0 ) , fitted into two recesses situated
on the sides of the bracket, are capped by the return
coil (40).
The three coils are housed in the shield (30) which
isolates them from external magnetic influences.
The bracket (110) is secured to a holder (10) by means
of a retaining ring (20).
( 2 ) Power Supply Circuit (Ref. Fig. 3 and IPL, Fig. 1)

The case (10) is secured to the back plate (210) by means

of three screws (20). A groove, machined around the peri-
phery of the back plate, accommodates a sealing ring (220)
which seals the joint between the case and the back plate.
The electrical connections are made to the receptacle (230)
which is secured to the back plate by four screws (240);
a sealing gasket (260) if fitted beneath the flange of the
receptacle.
The back dial (90) and front dial ( 7 0 ) are mounted on top
of two pillars (110) which secure the ratiometer movement
(120) to the back plate. The mounting plate (130), which
carries the bobbin resistors, is attached to the back plate
by means of two' screws (140).
The case is closed, at the front, by a g l a s s (40) which is
secured in position by a glass retaining ring (60). A lip,
formed on the inner circumference of the case, traps a
sealing washer (30) against the glass when the retaining
rinq is pressed into the case. A dial mask ( 5 0 ) is fitted
behind the glass and over the pointer spider.

2. OPERATION
A. General (Ref. Fig. 5 )
Figure 5 shows a Wheatstone bridge network. The upper two
arms of the bridge consist of two bridge resistors (R1 and
R2); the lower arms of the bridge are formed by a trimming
resistor (R3) and the variable resistance (RV1) of the asso-
ciated contents transmitter.
When the bridge is balanced (Rl/RVl=R2/R3), there is no
potential difference across B and C.
Conversely, a change in the resistance RV1, due to a variation
in the f u e l level, disturbs the balance of the circuit; the
two field coils(c1 and C 2 ) are flown by a current which
produces a magnetic field (h'), whilst the return coil ( C 3 ) ,
permanently supplied, creates a magnetic field (h).
The interactive effect of these two magnetic fields is to
turn the moving element (M) in the direction dictated by the
resultant (H). .Changes in the power supply do not alter the
direction of the resultant (H) and, consequently, have no
effect upon the operation of the indicator.

B . Detailed Operation (Ref. Fig.

The indicator operates in conjunction with a contents

transmitter which contains a rehostat-connected potentiometer.
The bridge resistors ( 1 7 0 ) , the trimming resistor ( 1 5 0 ) and
the variable resistance ( R V I ) of the contents transmitter
form a Wheatstone bridge which is supplied with 28 V d.c.
As previously mentioned, a change in the fuel level causes a
variation in the resistance ( R V 1 ) of the contents transmitter,
thus disturbing the balance of the circuit. The pointer will
therefore move over the dial to show the contents of th.e tank
in which the transmitter is installed.
The current limiting resistor ( 1 9 0 ) is designed to regulate
the current flowing through the return coil; it is of constan-
tan wire.
The ranging resistor (180) is used to adjust: the magnet
deflection and thus the instrument's range. It is of
constantan wire.
Changes in the resistance of the coils caused by temperature
variations in the indicator are compensated for by the tempe-
rature compensating resistor (160). It is of nickel wire.
