Friends
Introduction
From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his
disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem,
and suffer many things of the elders and chief
priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised
again the third day. Then Peter took him, and
began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee,
Lord: this shall not be unto thee. But he turned,
and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan:
thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest
not the things that be of God, but those that be of
men. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any
man will come after me, let him deny himself, and
take up his cross, and follow me. Matthew 16:21-24
This kind of friend means
well, but doesn’t:
• Understand your calling and
purpose in life
• Tries to redirect your life
• Tries to protect you from risk
taking
Jesus felt that this was the biggest
temptation to Him because:
• Peter was His dear friend and He loved
him deeply and had emotional pull on Him
• Peter was already successful and
affirmed by Him
Jesus answered and said unto him, blessed art
thou Simon Barjona… Matthew 16:17
• Peter wanted to accomplish God’s will
without sacrifice and pain
Then one of the twelve, called Judas
Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, And
said unto them, What will ye give me, and
I will deliver him unto you? And they
covenanted with him for thirty pieces of
silver. And forthwith he came to Jesus,
and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
And Jesus said unto him, Friend,
wherefore art thou come? Then came
they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took
him. Matthew 26: 14-15,49-50
• Judas was a friend with a price tag for
loyalty (30 pieces of silver)
