Mass wasting, also known as slope movement or mass movement, is the geomorphic process by which

soil, sand, and rock move downslope typically as a mass, largely under the force of gravity, but frequently
affected by water and water content as in submarine environments and mudflows.
* Gravity causes sections of cliffs and hills to move down slope.
* Steep and unstable slopes are more likely to have a mass movement than gentle and stable slopes.
What are the types of mass movement?
a A fall or topple happens when rocks and other sediments fall through the air and land at the bottom of
a slope.
b. A slide happens when a section of soil or rock suddenly gives way and moves down a slope. The
material moves as a single mass along a slippery zone. The slippery zone is often made up of wet
sediment.
c. Flows are a mixture of water, rock and sediment. They move very quickly. Large flows can bury entire
villages. Smaller flows can block roads.
d. Creep is a very slow mass movement that goes on for years or even centuries. You can't see creep
happening but leaning fences and poles and broken retaining walls show where it has taken place.
What is magma?
Magma is a mixture of molten rock, minerals, and gases. This mixture is usually made up of a hot liquid
base called the melt, minerals crystallizes by the melt, solid rocks incorporated into the meltform the
surrounding confines, and dissolved gases.
Earth is divided into three general layers.
*Core is the superheated center.
* Mantle is the thick, middle laye.r
*Crust is the top layer on which we live.
Magma originates in the lower part of the Earths crust and in the upper portion of the mantle known as
asthenosphere.
Asthenosphere is the layer of the Earth that lies below the lithosphere. It is a layer of solid rock that has
so much pressure and heat the rocks can flow like a liquid.
Differences in temperature, pressure, and structural formations in the mantle and crust cause magma to
form in different ways.
