Preparing for your Oral Presentations

A. Making Your Presentation Plan

i. Identify your individual topic.
ii. Make short notes about what aspects of your topic you want to speak about in your presentation. This
should be aligned with the information you have written in your plan of investigation and your
reflections.
iii. Decide how you are going to deliver your presentation:
 Drama/ Role Play – Ensure that you write a short script (be mindful of time constraint), decided on
your costumes, the set-up of the stage, etc. that you will be using on the day of their presentation.
Practise your script rigorously to ensure you have mastered your presentation.
 Poetry – create and practise your poem. Pay attention to: voice – how you articulate and enunciate
your words
 Prose – Pay attention to the elements of prose – characters, setting, plot, point of view, and theme.
 Speech/Argument/Exposition (report) – There should be a clear distinction made between the
three, highlighting the different techniques and structure associated with each. Confusion of any of
the three will adversely affect their scores.

iv. View a copy of the Scoring Rubrics for the Oral Presentation.
v. Read and discuss within your small group the concepts defined for each of the three facets and the
behaviour expected for each level of the facets.
vi. Practise your oral presentation skills in about 3 or more ways:
a) before a full-length mirror at home
b) before an adult (preferably, a parent), so they can give you ‘score’ feedback
c) record your practice oral presentation, listen to the recording two or more times, and perform a self-
assessment using the rubric.

B. On the Day of your Presentation

i. Come to the presentation room/area prepared and ready to present.
ii. Ensure you are dressed according to your presentation. Therefore, if you are doing a role play of
vendors in a market, you should ensure that your clothing and other props depict this.
iii. Be reminded to maintain eye contact and engage your audience
iv. Ensure you have adequately prepared and rehearsed your drama, poetry, prose, role play, speech,
argument, exposition. Thus, on your scheduled day, all the necessary materials and equipment are
prepared and in place.
v. Remember, the focus of this presentation is to show ownership of your issue/topic/ theme/event to
your audience by delivering a personal response. As a result, you should ensure that the information
you have collected is understood and knowledge of this displayed in your fluency of delivery,
structure, comprehensibility, development of topic, language use and vocabulary.
Use the questions below to guide you as you think about the format of your Oral Presentation.
