Horizontal 2 Phase Separators
Exterran offers a wide selection of Pre-Design
Quality (PDQ) Horizontal Two Phase Separators
for efficient separation. Horizontal separators
are designed ideally for situations where a fluid-
stream has a high gas-oil ratio, constant flow and
small liquid surge characteristics. Vessel diameters
range from 24” to 60” in low pressure applications
to 16” to 48” in high pressure applications. The
flow capacity can range, within those limits, up to 108
MMscfd. Horizontal separators are able to handle higher
gas velocities while still maintaining the same degree of separation
as vertical separators. This type of separator also has a much greater gas-liquid interface area than other
types which aids in the release of solution gas and reduction of foam.
How It Works
All separators have at least three and usually four sections comprising the separation process.
The first section is the primary separation section and is the portion of the vessel around the inlet where the
energy of the entering well-stream is dissipated by deflectors or impingement baffles. The larger quantities
of liquid and large liquid drops immediately start falling as a result of the gravitational force.
The next section is the area of the separator immediately beyond the inlet deflector, before the mist extractor;
it is called the secondary separation section. In this section the velocity of the gas and liquid is reduced
because of the increased cross-sectional area, allowing liquid particles to begin falling toward the bottom
of the vessel as a result of gravitational force. In the third section, most of the liquid particles which do not
drop out of the gas stream in the secondary separation section can usually be removed from the gas stream
by use of a mist extractor. The last section is the area
where the collected liquid from previous separation
can be held for a short period of time and then sent
to storage. The liquid retention time is normally one
minute for two phase (i.e., liquid-gas) separation
and allows time for the solution to break out of the
accumulated liquid.
