FIELD STUDY
PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING
Learning
Episode 1

My Learning Task Overview

This episode is centered on time-tested principles of learning which when applied

will lead to effective learning. It is good to find out the manner and the extent to which
these principles are applied in the classroom.

My Intended Learning Outcome

In this Episode, I must be able to identify classroom practices that apply or violate
each of the principles of learning.

My Performance Criteria
I will be rated along the following:

a. Quality of my observations and documentation,

b. Completeness and depth of my analysis,
c. Depth and clarity of my classroom observation-based reflections,
d. Completeness, organization, clarity of my portfolio and
e. Time of submission of my portfolio.

My Learning Essentials

Here are time-tested principles of learning:

1. Effective learning begins with setting clear expectations and learning
outcomes.
2. Learning is an active process. ‘’What I hear, I forget; what I see, I
remember, what I do, I understand.’’
3. Learning is the discovery of personal meaning of ideas. Students are
given the opportunity to connect what they learn with other concepts
learned, with real world experiences and with their own lives.
4. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.
My Map

Guided by question/questions, I will reflect on my

STEP
1 experience, write down my reflection.
1 I will identify evidence of applications/violations of the
STEP
2 principles of learning. (You are given a sample in # 1
principle.) I can cite more than one evidence per principle of
11 learning.

I will observe a class.

STEP 3
I will review the principles of learning given in “My
STEP
4 Learning Essentials”

My Analysis

1. Which principle /s of learning was/were most applied?

The most applied principle of learning is that “learning is a cooperative and

collaborative process”. As shown in the observation, the students were having group
activity in which they have to cooperate with each other; working together. The
discussion is more on student-centered, letting the student think and provide
possible answers for all the questions raised by the teacher.

2. Which principle of learning was least applied? Why was/were the principles

5. For me, the least applied principle of learning during the observation is that
”learning is the discovery of personal meaning of ideas. Students are given the
opportunity to connect what they learn with other concepts learned, with real
world experiences and with their own lives”. I found this the least because the
student were Grade 7 ranging from 12-13 years old. They still don’t have much
experience in which they can connect what they learn in discovering its personal
meaning of ideas.

3. How did the application of these learning principles affect learning?

The application of this learning principle affect learning in a sense that it

encourage students to actively participate, work cooperatively, let students to
discover new learning and relate those to divulging learning. For teachers it serves
as a guide to teach developmentally, appropriately, and culture-sensitive.

4. How did the non-application of these learning principles affect learning?

The non-application of these learning principles affects learning in a sense

that it reinforces teacher’s error. It helps the teacher to use appropriate method,
strategies and approach.
5. Do you agree with these principles of learning? Or have you discovered that they
are not always correct?

Yes, I agree. I observed that the use of these principles in the classroom
promote teaching religiously. Through the use of the learning principles students
became more active and more cooperative in class. The teacher is more systematic
in terms with his/her teaching.

My Reflections

My reflections and lessons learned on my observations of my Resource Teacher’s/s’

application/non-application of these principles.

Among those practices that I observed, which practices will I adopt and which ones
will I improve on? What lessons did I learned?

Practices worth adopting

The practice that is worth adopting is learning is an active process and learning is
cooperative and collaborative process for the reason that as I observed the students are
more active in class activities and group works. The students were given a chance to learn
by their own and discover learning or knowledge by the knowledge coming from their
teacher.

Practices to avoid and to improve on

In the teaching learning process, I observed that there are practices that teacher
should avoid such as giving activities that are complex and hard. Teacher should be learner
centered but she needs to consider the limit of her students. She needs to be
developmentally appropriate in considering the level of learning of her students and their
ability to acquire knowledge

Lesson learned

The lesson I have learned in the application of these 4 principles is that it will guide
the teacher to choose a method and approach of teaching that is effective and efficient.
With these the teacher could provide best teachings to their students. Also, with these
principles the teacher could make the class more active and confident to learn and
positively acquire knowledge.
Integrating Theory and Practice
1. Teacher Rose believes that students need not know the intended learning outcome of her lesson.
She proceeds to her learning activities at once without letting them know what they are supposed to
learn for the day. Which principles of learning does Teacher Rose negate?

A. Effective learning begins with setting clear expectations and learning outcomes.

B. Learning is an active process.

C. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning of ideas.

D. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.

2. Teacher Emma notices that in group work, students just leave the work to the leader and so vowed
never to give group work again. Against which principles of learning is Teacher Emma decision?

A. Learning is an active process.

B. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning of ideas.

C. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.

D. Effective learning begins with setting clear expectations and learning outcomes.

3. In her desire to finish the content of the course syllabus, Teacher Love just lectures while students
listen. Which principle of learning does Teacher Love violate?

A. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning of ideas.

B. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.

C. Effective learning begins with setting clear expectations and learning outcomes.

D. Learning is an active process.

4. Teacher Arielle asks her students to see the connection of their new lesson to their own personal
experiences and share the same with the class. Teacher believes in which principle of learning?

A. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.

B. Effective learning begins with setting clear expectations and learning outcomes.

C. Learning is an active process.

D. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning of ideas.

5. Teacher Lil avoids drills out to context. She gives real-world Math problems for student to drill on.
Teacher Lil is very much convinced of which principle of learning?

A. Learning is an active process.

B. Learning is the discovery of the personal meaning of ideas.

C. Learning is a cooperative and collaborative process.

D. Effective learning begins with setting clear expectations and learning outcomes.

My Learning Portfolio

You may wish to state the principles of learning in your own words or illustrate
each with diagram. Feel free to choose below.

Principles of Learning in My Own Words

The principle of learning in my own words is that, “Learning can take place in a different
level and topics and be more thoroughly explored”. The reason for this is a deeper
understanding of the learning materials. Learning can be acquired by anyone as long as
there is a willingness to learn. The teacher can never learn for their students but it’s the
student that need to the willing to learn to gain knowledge. The teacher will be there to
guide and facilitate the learning for the students but the students need work for them to be
able to learn.
