Project Description:
PROBLEM:
Taking a look at the cost of electricity all around the world, Iloilo City has one of the most
expensive electricity rates (World Atlas, 2016). In addition to that, efficiency in providing power
24 hours a day to end-users remains inadequate because of poor transmission facilities from
power generation plants to distribution companies. The issue of inefficiency in the distribution of
electricity caused by the lack of upgrading of the distribution system operated by private
distribution companies results in daily power blackouts. With the market still heavily in favour of
the use of fossil fuel instead of clean renewable energy, the environmental impact is also worth
looking into.
CURRENT SOLUTION:
Renewable energy can now be used to mitigate the high cost of electricity. Solar power in
household level is now available in the form of off grid solar electric systems which contains
additional equipment like the battery and the charge controller. Compared to the grid-tied
solar electric system which is only applicable when implemented by the net metering system,
the off grid solar electric system requires higher initial cost and maintenance cost.
PROPOSED SOLUTION:
Given the problems stated above, with the implementation of the net metering system, shifting
to renewable energy will be an attractive option to both the end user and the Distribution
Utility. Through the net metering system, household power can now be dispatched to the
power grid especially during hours when solar power is not fully utilized at home. The end user
can thus benefit from the reduced power cost. For the grid as a whole, as more end users
switch to renewable energy, dependence on fossil fuel will be reduced and power supply will
be increased at the local distribution utility, thus decreasing power outages and increasing
stabilization of the local grid.
