REPORT

3 - Day Capacity Building Programme For Master Trainers Of English At


Secondary at Secondary Level

17 to 19 June 2019

DAY -1

A 3-Day Capacity Building Programme for Master Trainers of English at


Secondary Level was conducted by DAV Centre for Academic Excellence, DAV
College Managing Committee from 17-19 June, 2019.

The programme kickstarted with the lighting of lamp and chanting of Gayatri
Mantra followed by DAV Gaan which enlightened the session. The Co-
ordiantor of the programme, Mrs Inder Mani Jain, emphasized on the necessity
to empower and upgrade the teachers to cater to the ever-increasing needs of
the young inquisitive minds. She triggered the imagination and the thought
processes of the teachers by conducting an interesting ice-breaking activity
‘Hands on tyre’. This was followed by a brief introduction of the Resource
Person of the day, Mrs Rajini Jamini, Lecturer-English, Delhi.

SESSION-1

In the first session, she allowed the teachers to discuss the changes in the
syllabus and scheme of examinations. There were discussions and deliberation
on the changes incorporated by CBSE. There were certain confusions in the
literature syllabus on which no conclusion could be drawn. It was further
instructed to follow latest sample papers.

SESSION-2

The session on reading skills was taken by the Resource Person. She raised an
issue as why reading is a neglected skill and what does teaching reading
involve. She stressed upon taking up reading not in isolation. On the basis of
handouts, she had a brainstorming session on different types of reading
passages prescribed for students of Classes IX and X. Teachers worked in
groups to comprehend the passages and answer some questions. Reading sub-
skills and strategies were discussed at length.
SESSION-3

The Resource Person took up formal letters and emphasized on the format and
other highlighting features of formal letters. Teachers in groups contributed in
clarifying the doubts hence helping to a common consensus.

SESSION-4

Next, the Resource Person handled five elements of story-writing. Pair and
group work activities further turned to be extremely informative.

SESSION-5

Finally, the Resource Person took up the session on the effective classroom
management strategies. Teachers were asked to come up with strategies and
techniques to handle slow learners and higher achievers. The Resource Person
threw light on different components of the same.

DAY-2

Mrs Inder Mani Jain commenced the day with a thorough discussion on the
Training Manual and presentation of training modules. She enquired if the
previous day session taken up by Mrs Rajini Jamini was fruitful and whether it
met with the requirements of the Master Trainers. She emphasized specifically
to carry out the future training programme as a perfect and enriched Master
Trainer taking into consideration the manual that has been given and make it
a very successful one.

SESSION-1

Mrs Ruchi Sengar, the Resource Person for the day highlighted on ‘Effective
use of Textbooks and created a congenial atmosphere integrating multiple
activities constructively.

SESSION-2

Mrs Ruchi Sengar then continued the session practically elucidating hands-on-
learning in a classroom scenario teaching prose and poetry. She stressed on
the importance of model recitation which enables students to elicit the theme
and central idea of the poem. The session turned out to be very interactive.
SESSION – 3

The next session on the enrichment and assessment of speaking and listening
skills was taken up by the resource person. She stressed upon the need to
develop speaking and listening skills.

The RP distributed hand outs with various activities which can be integrated to
develop the four skills among the students in a much innovative and
interesting manner. The RP also suggested not to take the listening and
speaking skills in isolation but to align it with textbook teaching.

Videos , games and activities made the sessions vibrant and engaging.

DAY – 3

The final day of the program commenced with the recapitulation and feedback
on the sessions conducted on Day 2.

Session -1

“Hands on Grammar” was taken up by the resource person Mrs Neelam Kul
Shreshtha, Lecturer English DOE, Delhi. She expressed her concern towards
grammar which is being largely neglected in the present scenario. She stated
that Grammar is an essential component for learning language. She first dealt
with clauses. Concepts of principal and subordinate clause was discussed at
length with examples. Activities and games further simplified the different
kinds of clauses.

Session -2

The RP further carried on with conditionals and non-finites . The doubts and
queries were discussed and deliberated among the teachers .

Session -3

The RP handled the session on “designing a blueprint for Question Paper”.


Blooms Taxonomy was elaborately discussed through group activities where
each group framed and presented questions related to Knowledge,
Understanding, Applying, Analysing, Evaluating and Creating.

Session -4
In the final session , she dealt with “ Designing of Standardized Question
Paper”. She focussed on the three aspects on framing a question paper, What
to ask, How to ask and Why to ask. She again emphasised on the meticulous
preparation of standardized question paper on the basis of Blue Print.

The Mater Trainers felt encouraged on being addressed by Dr Mrs Nisha Peshin
, who reminded the teachers of the greater responsibilities vested upon them
to uphold the purpose and objective of Capacity Building programme at their
zonal Level.

Finally the programme ended with the distribution of certificates to the


master trainers. The teachers in return assured to implement and execute the
take -aways in the future training programmes.
