Q no.1 Explain

Q no. 2 Design a cotter joint to connect two mild steel rods for a pull of 30Kn. The maximum
permissible stresses in tension 55 MPa and in shear 40 MPa and in crushing 70MPa.

Q no.3 A mild steel shaft of 50mm diameter is subjected ao a bending moment of 2000Nm and torque
’T’. If yield point of steel in tension is 200 MPa, Find the value of torque for
(a) Maximum Principal stress and (b) Maximum distortion energy theory.

Q no.4 Design a knuckle joint to transmit 150 KN. The design stress may be taken as 75 MPa in
tension , 60 MPa in shear and 150 MPa in crushing.

DESIGN PROJECT - COTTER JOINT


Q No. 1 Design a cotter joint which resist a tensile load of 250KN. The material of rod and cotter is
same and has a yield tensile strength of 240MPa. The compressive strength may be assumed twice of
the tensile strength. Whereas the shear strength may be consider as 0.5 times the tensile strength.
Assume factor of safety = 4.

ASSIGNMENT NO. 03
TITLE: - Design of Shaft, Keys, and Coupling
Q.1 Explain the followings.
(i) ASME code for design of shaft.
(ii) Effect of keyways on shaft.
(iii) Types of keys in detail.
(iv) Square key is stronger against crushing than rectangular key.
(v) Design of Kennedy Key.

Q.2 The internal diameter of hollow shaft is 2/3 rd of its external diameter. Compare the strength and
stiffness of the shaft with that of the solid shaft of the same materiel.

Q. 3 A shaft supported between two bearings 750mm apart, receives 12.5 KW power at 300 rpm
through a coupling located to the left of left hand bearing. It transmit the power to the belt pulley of
weight 300 N and diameter 450 mm, which is located at a distance of 200 mm to the right of right
hand bearing. The ration of belt tensions tight and slack sides is 2:1. The belt tension act in vertically
downward direction. The shaft material has yield strength of 300 N/mm 2 and an ultimate tensile
strength of 550 N/mm2. The combined shock and fatigue factor for bending and tension are 1.5 and 1
respectively. Determine (i) shaft diameter using A.S.M.E. code and (ii) the various stresses in
rectangular key, if key selected has 12 mm width, 10 mm height and 60 mm length.

Q. 4 A protected type rigid flange coupling is used to transmit 25 KW power at 500 rpm from an
engine to a machine. Design a coupling for an overload capacity of 25%. Assume following
permissible stresses for the components of coupling.

Q.5 Splined shaft 8 X 62 X 68 made of 55C8 (S y = 400MPa) transmits the power at 1000 rpm. The
width of splines is 12 mm and length is 90 mm. If the factor of safety is 3, determine the power
transmitting capacity of splines. Take Pb = 6 MPa.

TITLE: - Design of Threaded and Welded Joint
Q.1 Write a short note on.
(i) Bolt of Uniform strength
(ii) Advantages and Disadvantages of welded joints over threaded joint.
(iii) Stresses in But and Fillet Weld.

Q.2 A M24 coarse pitch tie bolt having a core diameter of 20.320 mm and pitch of 3 mm is used for
tightening to create an initial load of 30 KN. Assume coeff of friction for both threads and collar is
0.15. Collar radius of 18 mm. Determine the necessary tightening torque applied to nut. Also find
maximum shear stress in the bolt.

Q.3 A bracket plate carrying a load of 20 KN is to be welded to a column as shown in figure. Find
suitable size of weld if allowable shear stress in the weld is 70 MPa.

Q.4 The structural connection shown in figure is subjected to an eccentric force P of 10KN with an
eccentricity of 500 mm. The centre distance between bolts ! and @ is 200 mm, and the centre
distance between bolt 1 and 3 is 150 mm. All the bolts are identical. The bolts are made from plain
carbon steel30C8 (Syt = 400 N/mm2) and the factor of safety is 2.5. determine the size of bolts.

TITLE: - Design Project -2 “Screw Jack”
Q.1 Design a bottle type screw jack to lift a load of 120 KN by the force of 350N at the end of lever
to achieve maximum lift of 200 mm. the material of screw jack as yield strength of 400MPa and nut
has 220 MPA. Assume mean collar radius is 0.75 mean diameter of screw. The coeff. of friction of
single start is 0.12 and that of sleeve is 0.15. Take factor of safety is 4. The maximum bearing
pressure is limited to 15MPa and E = 210GPa.

Q. 2 A power having double start square threads of 25 mm nominal diameter and 5 mm pitch is acted
upon by an axial load of 10KN. The outer and inner diameter of screw collar is 50 mm and 20 mm
respectively. The coefficient of thread friction and collar friction may be assumed as 0.2 and 0.15
respectively. The screw rotates at 12 rpm. Assuming uniform wear conditions at the collar and
allowable thread bearing pressure of 5.8 N/mm2,

Find (i) The torque required to rotate the screw. (ii) The stress in the screw, and (iii) The number of
threads of nut in engagement with screw.

Q. 3 Design a helical compression spring for maximum load of 1200 N for a deflection of 35 mm
using the value of spring index as 5. The maximum permissible shear stress for spring wire is 450
MPa and moduus of rigidity is 88 KN/mm2.

Q. 1 Write short note on.

Q.2 A solid circular shaft, 15 mm in diameter, is subjected to torsional shear stress, which varies from
0 to 35 N/mm2 and at the same time, is subjected to an axial stress that varies from -15 to +30 N/mm2.
The shaft is made of steel Fe E 400 (Sut = 540 N/mm2 and Syt = 400 N/mm2) and corrected endurance
strength of shaft is 200 N/mm2. Determine the factor of safety.

Q.3 A transmission shaft supports a pulley midway between the two bearings. The bending moment
at the midpoint varies from 200 N-m to 600 N-m. The torque on the shaft varies from 70 N-m to 200
N-m. The frequencies of variation of bending moment and torque are equal to the shaft speed. The
shaft rotates at 1440 rpm. The shaft is made of plain carbon steel with ultimate tensile strength of 540
N/mm2 and yield strength of 400 N/mm2. The corrected endurance limit of the shaft is 200 N/mm2. If
the factor of safety is 2, determine the diameter of the shaft.
