a SiO2 glass layer is laid down using a
process called chemical vapor deposi-

and nickel-chrome alloy and are sput-

subsequent process steps, convention-

create the meander-shaped conductor
paths typical of the strain gauge.
Staiger said that, in contrast to the
widely used silicon-based pressure
sensor systems, sensors using thin-

temperature errors and an increased
long-term stability due to the fact that
all materials used in their construc-
tion have similar coefficients of ther-

As far as the sensors’ performance
over their lifetime, Trafag said it car-

tests and intentionally destructive
tests. Those involved exposing sen-

for extended periods, as well as to the
combination of constant, high nomi-

test run involved exposing the sensors
for 2000 hours to 120° to 140°C.
Zeisel said that highly accelerated

to definitively evaluate the design, as
these tests are intentionally driven

pany said the aim of these tests is to
have sensors still functioning within
specifications at the conclusion of the

possible during the tests. The Trafag

flex SF, sits in the market alongside the
17-7PH steels and its variants, and is
particularly well suited for springs for
common rail fuel injection valves.”
The company said that testing as a
compression spring confirmed that
Springflex SF could resist more than
300 million highly stressed cycles.
This result greatly exceeded expecta-
tions and has led to line qualification
for the new material by a major man-
ufacturer of common rail systems.
Springflex SF — the SF stands
for Super Fatigue resistant — is a
modified version of the existing du-
plex stainless-steel Sandvik Springflex
grades. The new material is duplex
steel with an austenitic-ferritic grain
structure and combines high tensile
strength with relaxation, fatigue and
corrosion resistance properties.
“The severity of demand on fatigue
performance in spring wire depends
on the number of load cycles and the
type of stresses applied,” Paulin said.

Advances In Combustion Technology
Within the duplex microstructure,
the benefits of both austenitic and fer-
ritic structures need to be exploited and
to remain stable throughout the wire
drawing, spring coiling and heat treat-
ment processes, the company said.
The chemical composition and man-
ufacturing route mean that no tendency
for martensitic transformation exists
and ductility remains throughout the
entire production process.
“Martensite is harder than austenite
and contributes to the tensile strength,”
Eriksson said. “However, martensite is
brittle and prone to cracking, espe-
cially longitudinally. Martensite has a
lower density compared with austen-
ite, which means that it increases stress
levels in the surrounding austenite as
it tries to swell within the steel during
cold working.”
In duplex material, grain boundar-
ies between the austenite and ferrite
phases work as barriers against fa-

Avoid Cold Corrosion In Two-Strokes

Presence of cold corrosion should prompt increase in engine’s lube-oil feed rate, BN level

(the ACC factor) is possible in cer-
tain cases, the company said.
In order to improve the engine
performance at lower loads, the
pressures Pcomp and Pmax have been
increased at part-load in the lat-
est engine designs. This calls for an
optimization of the cylinder liner
surface temperature. Furthermore,
this development has also required
a rebalancing of the cylinder lube
oil’s ability to lubricate in order to
neutralize the acid formation creat-
ing cold corrosion, MAN said.
Based upon experience and careful
evaluation of testing high-BN cylin-
der oils on engines with a relatively
high corrosive level, it was decided
to introduce BN100 as the new de-
sign basis for ME-C/ME-B/MC-C8.1

engine types.
“An excess of cold corrosion is

of some pre-8.1 engines.
“Therefore, despite the fact that many pre-mark 8.1
engine designs operate successfully using mid-BN-range
lube oils (50<BN<60) commonly available on the mar-
ket, we recommend paying close attention to any engine
wear by using MAN-recommended drain-oil analyses
and by making regular cylinder inspections,” Aabo said.
“Accordingly, mid-range oils should only be used when
there is positive wear data directly backing up this course
of action.”
Essentially, any presence of cold corrosion should
prompt an increase in the affected engine’s lube-oil feed
rate or BN level. To achieve the optimum cylinder oil dos-
age, the optimum BN level and cylinder lube oil should
be employed. To this end, iron (Fe) and BN levels in the
drain oil should be regularly measured.
As a standard procedure, MAN recommended initial
observation to actual lubricating demand when circum-
stances change, such as operating a new engine, chang-
ing cylinder oil type, etc. MAN advised beginning with
a high feed rate (ACC factor) of 0.40 g/kWh x S%. With
this knowledge of the actual wear rate, a solution can
be obtained. If the wear is confirmed as low, then the
cylinder-oil dosage can be reduced by lowering the ACC
factor in incremental steps of 0.05 g/kWh x S%.
“Piston ring wear can be measured directly at scavenge-
port inspections, either by measuring the remaining
depth of the CL grooves or, on large-bore engines with
cermet coated top piston rings, by measuring the coating
thickness with a coating-thickness gauge,” Aabo said. “A
faster response may be obtained by onboard measuring
of the iron content and the remaining BN in the drain oil
from each cylinder.”

The original design of the SGF couplings is a combination of cord inlays and rubber, elastic components called SGF-Links. While the cord inlays
carry most of the load, the rubber adds dampening.

The system reduces exhaust emis-
sions to low levels from the diesel-
hydraulic motive power, which
totals 1700 kW in the three-car,
three-engine DMU configuration,
Cummins said.
The engine also has a fast torque
response with a peak output of
3084 Nm, enabling the DMU to
accelerate quickly from idle. The
company said this is an important
advantage in reducing journey times
on routes with short distances be-
tween stations.
The top speed of the DMU is 145
kph and, according to Cummins, the
engine runs quietly with minimal vi-
bration due to an upgraded common-
rail fuel system that balances fueling
across the six cylinders.
The first Nippon Sharyo DMU is

MTU
M The MTU Series 4000 diesel engine has received Naval
Vessel Rules (NVR) certification by the American Bureau
of Shipping (ABS).
The 20V 4000 M73 engine received the NVR certification, a re-
quirement for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Fast Response Cutter (FRC)
program, after 1500 hours of testing, which included extensive
run times at 110% of the engine’s rated power in a variety of
extreme environmental conditions, the company said. Extensive
validation testing was also completed in commercial marine and
military applications.
The Series 4000 now joins the Series 8000 engine as ABS NVR
certified within the engine portfolio of MTU, a Rolls-Royce Power
Systems AG company.

MAN Fine-Tunes MGT6100/6200

Combustion System
Single-digit NOx achieved in the 50 to 100% operating range

In addition to high efficiency, one

of MAN Diesel & Turbo’s (MDT)
main goals in the development of the
MGT6100/6200 gas turbine family
was to achieve an environmentally
friendly operation.
This characteristic was tied to the
development of an advanced combus-
tion system capable of maintaining
low NOx and CO values in an operat-
ing field that was as wide as possible.
This result was obtained by a de-
velopment program subdivided into
several successive steps.
The starting point was to capital-
ize on the experience gained during
the development of an advanced can
combustor (ACC) system. Based on
DLE premix technology for the ex-
isting THM gas turbine family, the
ACC system was originally designed
for diffusion flame technology of its
combustion system.
However, the differences be-
tween the THM and MGT combus-
tion systems were such that an in-
depth study and reengineering of
the whole system were required.
For example, the THM features two
cans powering a 10 MW class ma-
chine — that is, more than 5 MW
per can. The MGT is a 6 MW class
turbine with a combustion system
of six cans, 1 MW per can. This dif-
ference in size has a primary effect
on the reisdence time of the flame.
Also, the firing temperatures of the
two families are different: the tem-
perature is higher for the MGT, MAN’s MGT 6200 two-shaft gas turbine is shown on the test bench in Oberhausen, Germany.

was transferred to Deutsches Zentrum

temperature conditions.
The MGT test rig was connected
to the air and fuel gas supplies on
one side and to the exhaust stack on
the other to perform a pressure test
of about 15 bar and vary by 10%
the Wobbe Index of the natural gas
feeding the German network.
Finally, tests of the complete com-
bustion system (six cans) were trans-
ferred to the Oberhausen testing fa-
cilities and performed both on the
single-shaft MGT6100 and on two
two-shaft MGT6200 turbines.
These tests confirmed the single-
can results and highlighted that the
premixing systems ensure a ho-
mogeneous air/fuel mixture. This
characteristic is essential to avoid
hot spots in the flame that could af-
fect the life of the combustor walls
and contribute to NOx formation.
Single- digit NOx emissions were
recorded in the entire 50 to 100%
operating range with CO levels of
10 to 15 ppmv during the test pe-
riod of the MGT6100.
The company said that a pilot
flame is always on to ensure safe-
ty operation under sudden load
variations.
The MGT6200 prototype was
installed at SolVin, Rheinberg,
and was operating at NO x emis-
sions below 25 ppmv, which com-
plies with the German limit of
36.5 ppm (TA Luft). MDT said it INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS. PROVEN PERFORMANCE®.

emissions
Your problems solved.
// As the world’s first commercial high horsepower fuel quality sensor,
NIRISTM can revolutionize your fuel management strategy through ‘real-
time’ optimization of injection, combustion and post-treatment of fuels.
In diesel engine configuration 12 different fuel parameters are measured including the CETANE
index, density, percentage of biodiesel and hydro-carbon molecular profile.

Key benefits can include:

• reduced fuel consumption (up to 5%) • increased environmental compliance
• safer use of out-of-specification fuel • lowered fuel analysis costs
• easy installation due to small size L168mm • prevention of component damage
