ABSTRACT

Indonesia experiences the highest rate of deforestation among tropical countries. Hence,
timely and accurate forest data are required to combat deforestation and forest degradation
in support of climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation policy initiatives.
Within Indonesia, Sumatra Island stands out due to the intensive forest clearing that has
resulted in the conversion of 70% of the island's forested area through 2010.
We present here a hybrid approach for quantifying the extent and change of primary forest
in Sumatra in terms of primary intact and primary degraded classes using a per-pixel
supervised classification mapping followed by a Geographic Information System (GIS)-
based fragmentation analysis. Loss of Sumatra's primary intact and primary degraded
forests was estimated to provide suitable information for the objectives of the United
Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Reducing Emission from
Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD and REDD+) program.
The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) data set was employed to evaluate
results. GLAS-derived tree canopy height indicated a significant structural difference
between primary intact and primary degraded forests.

The project titled “IOT FRAME WORK FOR DETECTION OF DEFORESTATION OF

TREES BASED ON IMAGES“ has been prepared by R.S.V.AKHILESH,G.MOHAN
SREENIVAS,P.SAI KARTHIKEYA ,ANIL KUMAR REDDY under the able guidance of
their prof. K.RAJAKUMAR. The work elaborates on the sources of how much land is
being deforested from one time to some another time let it be years. Also finding the ways
in which we could stop deforestation and also bringing awareness among the people. The
facts have been presented in the best possible way and in some cases brief statistical data
have also been mentioned.

We, the members of team 3, consider ourselves indebted to the various journals available
in Periyar EVR Central Library that we have consulted to work on this project. Lots of
information has also been gathered from the internet, which have been listed in the
“REFERENCES” section.

We would also like to thank our Dean (SCOPE) who has offered us this wonderful
opportunity to work for working on this project.

We admit that we have thoroughly enjoyed doing this project and it has given us immense
pleasure in successfully bringing to a completion. We hope that the experiences gathered
from this project will help us in our later lives.

Introduction

1. Objectives and Goals of our Project

Our project has been made based on the technological advancements being made in the
diverse field of deforestation. Our focus has been to make detailed case studies on the
available sources of deforestation and also on the technological advancements made in
this arena. The objectives on which our project has been based on are:

I. To understand in what ways we can shift towards afforestation.

II.To present available statistical data on deforestation.
III.To produce facts on advancements being made in the areas of deforestation.
IV. To suggest improvements in context to our country.

2. Project plan
For this project we have been given four months of time. In the first month we have
gathered information on the project. In the second month, we have generated partial code
for the project using matlab In the third month we made survey on the project named
detection of deforestation based on images and also we have developed the code. In the
fourth month that is review 3 we are going to present you the complete code which is
done in matlab which shows the area deforestated from one particular time to another.
3. Methodology and description
I. To be able to programmatically detect the prevalence of deforestation in an area
using Matlab applied to pictures taken from an aerial point of view, such as from a
drone.
II. It should be possible to create an algorithm that accurately identifies the areas of a
forest that are losing their tree cover with a reasonable degree of accuracy.
III. It should also be possible to detect the rate of deforestation given that regular
photographs of the region are taken.
IV. Using Matlab to convert an image first into grayscale
V. Second, the code checks for objects within the frame that look like clumps of
foliage and identify and ID them.
VI. By observing the rate of decline in these detected objects, it will be possible to
detect whether deforestation is happening or not as well as the rate of
deforestation.
VII. Using a graphing tool to visualise the same.
VIII. Finding out the distances between the target and obtained images to provide a
better analysis of the algorithm itself.
4. Experimental Result
i. Test case
ii. Results / Outputs:
5. CONCLUSION
The main contribution of our work is presenting the utility of detecting deforestation
and forest degradation through images, and monitoring forest dynamics, in tropical
rainforests. In a methodological context, disturbances are detected using a series of
observations of radar backscatter, mapping deforestation and forest degradation as
continuous progressions in space and time rather than discrete events. Disturbances
were mostly concentrated in lands with no land use allocation, e.g. lands already in
use for agricultural or pastoral farming with secondary and degraded forests, and in
mining concessions which expanded into intact forests. Specifically monitoring
degradation in the diffused pattern of deforestation, and allocated land use zones, may
therefore be essential to predict and prevent further permanent deforestation.
