ATBQ 2022 PRINCIPLES OF BUILDING ECONOMICS


GROUP ASSIGNMENT

Introduction
Cost planning is a procedure typically used to estimate the cost of a construction project. The cost
planning activities during pre-construction, or design phase, is central to the success of the entire
project. In this regard, the cost planner need to use cost models to prepare reliable estimates
throughout different stages of the project. These estimates would act as a guide for the clients and
design team to ensure the projects are designed within the required cost and quality.

Objective
To enable students to be able to select appropriate historical cost data and produce preliminary
estimates for typical construction project.

Learning Outcomes
Upon the successful completion of this assignment, students should be able to:-
CLO1: Produce preliminary estimates using various methods of estimating.

Assignment Tasks:
Your company is involving in a new proposed construction project (see Attachment 1). Refer to
Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) plan of work model (2013), the project is now at its
pre-construction stage. You are required to form a cost-planning team with not more than five (5)
students in a team. All members shall participate in the preparation of cost estimates to inform
your client on the likely budget for the new project.

Task 1: Preparation of a first estimate


1. Based on the drawings given (see Attachment 1), you are required to prepare a first realistic cost
limit for the new project.

2. You shall state the type of cost model that most appropriate to be used to prepare the cost limit*.

3. You shall also explain the principles, calculation methods, cost data, etc. in preparing the
estimate for the project.

Task 2: Preparation of a cost plan


1. Based on the cost limit established in Task 1, you shall prepare a cost plan by using appropriate
type of cost model.

2. You shall also explain the principles, calculation methods, cost data, etc. in preparing the cost
plan*.

3. You shall state the necessary and reasonable assumptions for information that are not provided.

Note: * To acquire the cost data, you may refer to BUILDING COST DATABASE MALAYSIA or
other online cost data where appropriate.

Task 3: Group presentation and Q&A


1. You will be given 15 minutes to present your estimates (established in Tasks 1 and 2) in a client-
consultant meeting attended by your client and the design team.

2. Your presentation shall be computer-aided and presented by every team member in formal attire.

3. You will be asked about individual experience of the challenges, difficulties and/or ambiguities
faced during the preparation of the estimates and how you overcome them.

Format of Submission
1. The submission of the group assignment shall consist of the following order:-
a) Front cover;
b) APPENDIX 1: Plagiarism Statement

c) Assignment brief and assessment record;


d) Assignment Tasks 1 and 2
e) Reference (Harvard referencing)
f) Appendix (if applicable)

2. The assignment must be typed by using Times New Roman font, sized 11 with 1.5 line spacing
and presented in A4 size paper.

3. You are required to prepare a standard assignment writing e.g, with table of contents, list of
references, appendices (if applicable) and proper tape binding or comb binding. Appropriate
insertion of divider is recommended to enhance the layout presentation of assignment.

4. Length of the assignment shall be about 3000 words. Students should use their judgement not
to provide redundant information.

Assessment Strategy
1. This assignment contributes 60% to the coursework grade of ATBQ2022 Principles of Building
Economics.

2. The amount of contribution is at the discretion of lecturer in-charged. Students who turn in less
than satisfactory work may be required to resubmit the assignment.

3. For late submission, there will be a reduction of absolute marks from the mark’s score submitted:
a) Late 1 to 3 days after deadline of submission: minus 10 marks;
b) Late 4 to 7 days after deadline of submission: minus 20 marks;
c) Late more than 7 days after deadline of submission: 0 marks
