1.) The diffusivity of the gas pair O2-CCl4 is being determined by observing
the steady-state evaporation of CCl4 into a tube containing O2. The
distance between the CCl4 liquid level and the top of the tube is
Z2-Z1=17.1 cm. The total pressure on the system is 755mm Hg, and the
temperature is O⁰C. The vapour of CCl4 at the temperature is 33.0 mm
Hg. The cross-sectional area of the diffusion tube is 0.82 cm2. It is found
that 0.0208 cm3 of CCl4 evaporate in a 10 hour period after steady state
has been attained. What is the diffusivity of the gas pair O2-CCl4? (6)
2.) What is the evaporation rate in gm/hr of CCl3NO2(chloropicrin) into air at
25⁰C? Make the customary assumption that air is a “pure substance”.
Total pressure -770 mm Hg
Diffusivity (CCl3NO2-air)-0.088 cm2/s
Vapor pressure of CCl3N02-23.81 mm Hg
Distance from liquid level to top of the tube-11.14 cm (9)
Density of CCl3NO2-1.65gm/cm3
Surface area of liquid exposed for evaporation-2.29 cm2

L=13cm water film runs down the wall

Film thickness
Surface conc. Assumed equal to the sat. conc.

Chlorine-bearing gas
1.) Let A stands for CCl4 and B for O2. The molar flux A is then

NA= Vρ/(MA.R .T)=(0.0208 cm3×1.59 gm/cm3)/(154 gm-mole×0.82

Cm3×36000 sec)

We know,
NA ǀz=z1=CDAB/(Z2-Z1)×ln(xB2/xB1)

DAB=(NA ǀZ=Z1)(Z2-Z1)/c ln(xB2/xB1)

=(NAǀz=z1)(Z2-Z1)RT/ p ln (pB2/pB1)
=0.0636 cm2/sec

2.) Assumption:-
 Steady state
 No chemical reaction
NAǀZ.ρ -NAǀZ+∆Z.ρ= 0
NAǀZ- NAǀZ+∆Z =O

-dNA/dZ =O
NA(1-XA)= -CDAB(dXA/dZ)

NA z1∫z2dZ= - CDAB XA1∫XA2(dXA/1- XA)

NA(Z2-Z1)= CDAB ln (1-XA2/1-XA1)

P=770 mm Hg, PB2=770 mm Hg, PB1=770-23.81= 746.2 mm Hg

DAB= 0.088 cm2/sec ,T=273+15=288K
Z2-Z1= 11.14 cm

NA=[{(770/760)atm×0.088 cm2/sec}/{0.08205×103 atm.cm3.k-1.gmol-1

×285k×11.14 atm}]ln(770/746.2)]
= 1.06338×10-8gmole/cm2.sec
Molecular weight of CCl3NO2= 164.5gm/gm-mole
Evaporation rate, WA=NAZ. MA. a
=(1.06338×10-8gmol/cm2.sec) ×(164.5gm/gm-mole)
=4.0058×10-6×3600 gm/hr
= 1.442×10-2gm/hr
