CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Making its way to victory is a sure product of hard work and skills for a

prizewinning result. A team will not acquire skills they needed overnight, it’s by

continuous perfect practice, may be for a year and a half or for a couple of sleepless

months. Training program can be a clutter if the sequence intended for the players

are not suited for the furtherance of the players, but if the program will perfectly fit for

their needs, the explosive power, strength, stability, quickness will be unlocked and

achieved. An innovative recovery and regeneration plan will also help you avoid

ankle, knee, and shoulder injuries. Ever wonder what it takes to be successful

volleyball player? It takes a lot of determination.

As a student of Bachelor of Secondary Education and taking MAPE as major,

it is our mission to completely formulate an enhancing program for athletes to build

their core and mind. It is important throughout the framed training program is the

progress of the players, if the player gets his upper body stronger and is able to hit

the volleyball faster and harder, jumps higher than he previously could, that is due to

an effective and progressive training program.

The formulation of training program is not as easy as turning on a light bulb; it

comes with a careful and thorough analysis of what you really want to achieve for

your athletes. Let’s take it from here, a volleyball player needs a 10-round jog and 50

push ups, but the thing is, one of them has asthma and he suddenly slept and fade

right in the middle of the act.

Success comes with hard work. If perfection came easy then everyone would be

the same. What sets you apart from everyone else? Never be outworked. Give

yourself every opportunity to be great. Train hard and work hard.

1
1.1 Background of the Study

Training program is the only strategic way to win but it is being thrown away

and set aside. After knowing the main tenacity of the program, it’s always been

neglected because they believe that if they have the best player in town there’ll be no

problem that will rise during or after the event. That is the major inaccuracy of

information that an instructor would ever have. It’s being said that training program

will enhance skills and expertise of any field but then if the case is that there is a lack

of knowledge on how will a training program works no heightening will take place.

Training program should focus on the four aspects in developing volleyball

players. These are conditioning, basic skills, strategies and mastery of plays and

values; this must be applied and sustained so that the skills of volleyball players in

Camarines Norte State College, College of Education will be improved.

Having the information from above being merged, the researchers came up to

a decision which was to conduct a study that regard the training program.

Objectives:

This study tends to help Volleyball players on improving their skills and

knowledge. The objectives of the researchers are the following:

1. To improve their skills and knowledge through proper training program

2. To determine what steadfast strategies and techniques to improve the

volleyball players

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The study aims to determine the occurrence of the difficulties which affects

the performance not just the player but the group itself. These difficulties usually

2
encountered through the training that the players endure. These Specific

questions that the researcher aims to answer are the following:

a. Does the amount of the time for the players is enough to practice before the

game?

b. Do they get the proper training they needed?

c. Do the players train regularly?

d. Are the players enhancing their skills during their training?

e. What are the effects of it to players or is the training has an effective outcome

to them?

1.3 Assumptions and Hypothesis

This study will provide answers to the following:

a. There is enough time allocated for the trainings, practice and conditioning.

b. The players do the proper training they need.

c. The players train regularly.

d. They enhance their skills during their training.

e. The training program given to the players has a huge impact to them.

1.4 Scope and Limitations

This study was limited only among the selected players and teachers

handling the sports volleyball in Camarines Norte State College, College of

Education. The researchers gathered 100 selected respondents, the students,

athletes, and teachers. This is to define the set of knowledge, skills and

experience necessary for which manifest in the activities regarding volleyball.

3
1.5 Significance of the Study

This research study can help the future purposes of the following:

 Athletes- this will help to improve their skills in volleyball and it will

also develop their values and attitudes as an athlete.

 Coach- this research can help them to provide the proper training

for the athletes.

 Sports Analyst- this will provide them more knowledge about

Developing Training Program for Effective and Quality Volleyball

Players.

 Administration- to enlighten them that Developing Training

Program for Effective and Quality Volleyball Players is important.

 Future researchers- it will help them in their future studies, it may

serve as a legal basis.

1.6 Definition of Terms

The following terms used in the study were defined conceptually and

operationally for better understanding.

Effective- Producing a decided, decisive, or desired effect.

Quality- A peculiar and essential character that someone or something has

Training- The process by which an athlete prepares for competition by exercising,

practicing and etc.

Clutter- To fill cover with scattered or disordered things that impede movement or

reduce effectiveness.

Explosive- Relating to an explosion or caused by an explosion.

Strength- The quality that allows someone to deal with problems in a determined

and effective way.

4
Stability- The quality or state of something that is not easily changed or likely to

change.

Quickness- Done or happening in a short amount of time.

Endure- To continue to exist in the same state or condition.

Enlighten- To give knowledge or understanding to someone or something.

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES AND LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough and

in-depth search done by the researchers. This study also has theoretical and

conceptual framework to fully understand the research to be done and lastly the

definition of terms for better comprehension of the study.

Related Literature

“Sports performance training is very different from conventional training.

Sports performance is all about explosive movements, reaction, speed, and agility”
1
(Nick Sparks,2002). Conventional training normally put more emphasis on body

transformation and muscular built. A program that includes sport performance

training has to be developed specifically for that sport. This type of training normally

includes wide ranges of agility, power and speed training. There is a lot of emphasis

on the planes of motion such as moving forward (sagittal), backward twisting

(transverse), and sideways (frontal). You will not see many static stretches where

you are holding a stretch for 20 seconds (pg.207-208) (2Jara Soost, 2001). You will

see more dynamic stretches such has high jumps or triple flexion movements such

as tossing a medicine ball by twisting to the side. Though the title states sports

performance, It does not mean that the average every day person cannot include this

in their routines. These types of exercises are a lot of fun and it really gets the

adrenaline pumping. So try to include some sports performance movements in your

next workout session (3Mike Allard, 2001).

Sports performance training is just what it sounds like. You are training for

optimal performance in a particular sport. For example if you want to perform better

6
in track and field, you would do specific training for that sport such as sprint intervals,

hurdle practice, and baton passes to name a few.

Whatever is needed to perform better in the sport of your choice is train

specifically. As a fitness coach I would also add some non-sport specific speed,

agility, and quickness (SAQ) drills into the mix (4Bennett Adams 2008).

Sports performance training is different from fitness and bodybuilding training

in that the end goal is not to look better or have better overall health, but to improve

athletic performance specifically (5Phillip Garrison et.al 2000). Generalized sports

performance training focuses on improving generalized skills like muscular strength,

core strength, balance, stability, coordination, hip, ankle, and shoulder mobility and

stabilization, and improved motor skills or the ability to move with skill.

Related Studies
6
According to John Blievernicht (2004), Sports Training Performance is

exercising with the specific goal of improving your effectiveness as an athlete in your

particular sport. A traditional type of fitness training might include some cardio work,

strength training and some stretching for flexibility. This type of training might get

someone in general shape and have them improve as an athlete somewhat. But

sports performance training gets more specific. Volleyball players might train to

improve their vertical jump with plyometric. Wide receivers in football might work on

developing acceleration in sprinting. And soccer players might work on footwork and

agility drills to develop into better defenders.

Sports Training Program is the implementation of specific exercises and

variables with the end result being an improvement in your chosen sport. Every sport

challenges and athlete's physical capabilities in different ways, so, in return, a good

sports performance program will enhance the capabilities of the athlete to perform

the skills most necessary to their sport of choice as stated by 7Larry Husted a NASM
Elite Trainer (2006).

7
Good Sports Training Program will help athletes to prevent injury, decrease

wasted effort due to improper movement, increase postural control, balance and

stability, increase muscular endurance, increase total strength and elevate maximum
power output.

It is important to remember that Sports Performance training includes helping

the athlete while they are away from the sports arena or practice field. With that

being said, blanketing these benefits with a focused nutritional and supplementation

program will help create adaptation and improve recovery so that the athlete

can maximize their athletic potential.

8
Based on National Academy of Sports Medicine, Sports Training Program is

an approach to training that helps athletes achieves their desired performance goals.

Utilizing integrated movement that focuses on functional strength and neuromuscular

efficiency, forces the athlete to work in all three planes of motion versus just one

plane, which is commonly seen in a traditional strength and conditioning programs of

every athlete that is visible to their program.

An Integrated Sports Performance Program consists of flexibility, cardiorespiratory,

core, balance, plyometric, speed, agility, and quickness training.

Athletes have goals of enhancing strength, power, speed, agility, quickness,

reaction, and more to improve abilities in their respective sport of choice. General

fitness training can involve the same movements that athletes require, but Sports

Performance Training is more specific to the demands of that particular sport. Sports

Training Program programs are designed in a year round fashion, built around the

seasons of an athlete.

Sports Training Program builds upon the foundational components of fitness

with a layer of specificity. Flexibility requirements are designed to mimic the motions

performed on the field. Strength and power components are comprised of total body

moves that involve upright and ground activities. Speed, agility, and quickness

8
training are designed with multi-planar moves and involve the need to react with

varying situations. Endurance training is built with the required zone training

demands that mimic their sport. While enhancing these foundations skilling and sport

technique are also built within any Sports Training Program. It is not uncommon for

an elite athlete to have various coaches working within a closed system to enhance

the effectiveness of the overall program.

9
Paul Winsper (2008) stated that Sports Training Program is designed to

enhance pre-determined physical qualities associated skills deemed necessary for

increased success and reduced risk of occurrence/severity of injury in certain athletic

endeavor.

The most important benefit of Sports Training Program is that these

components are designed in an integrated fashion to create an explosive, injury

resistant athlete

“Sports performance training simply put is a type of training that is designed

to improve your fitness (in the broad sense of the term) level for the purpose of
10
improving your ability to perform a given sport” Clark Simons (2008). It includes

corrective and restorative exercise, strength training, conditioning and cardiovascular

training, sports specific techniques and drills, periodization (devoting certain periods

of time during a given year to different types and intensities of exercise depending on

when optimal performance is needed), nutritional advice, mental and psychological

training, and constant and consistent accountability and monitoring by a qualified

trainer

be a proficient athletes because of the acquisition of skills, knowledge and

experience gained by attending seminars, joining professional athlete sessions and

competing with a more experienced athletes.

Following this line of thought, if Camarines Norte State College suceeds in

properly training the Athletes who are being enrolled in different colleges especially

the volleyball players it serves as an output that they will be able to secure a high

quality players thus, providing better chances for them to win on any competitions

Volleyball players have experienced a lot of things that developed his skills to

become more than what he is before like being a varsity player to a prestigous

universities, showing off their skills in every competion that they will join inside and

outside the premise of the school. By that, it serves as a process for their personality

development for them to have a bright future of they wanted to become.

Methodology

This chapter presents a description of the research design selection and

description of respondents, research instruments, data collection procedure and

statistical treatments used.

Methods of Research

The descriptive survey method of research is used in this study, utilizing

particular questionnaires, to gather the necessary data and information needed for

this study. It is used because the writer could readily meet all the respondent

personalities.

Interview, to gather more reliable data, informal interview within Camarines

Norte State College teacher was conducted. The interview rendered necessary

information. The writers were the one who conducted the interview to gather

additional data to counteract doubtful information.

Respondents

The purposive random sampling design used in gathering data. Selection of

respondents was selected randomly with a total number of one hundred (100). These

one hundred (100) respondents are from the students, faculties and athletes of

Camarines Norte State College.

Sampling Design

The total population of respondents in Camarines Norte State College are

consists of one hundred (100) respondents. The researchers used random

convenient sampling.

12
Preparation of Questionnaire

The questionnaire is formulated by the writers in order to identify the

perception on conducting successful Sports Training Program, a solution to problems

encountered by the Volleyball players of Camarines Norte State College.

They conducted an interview among some knowledgeable persons to know

how to produce good questionnaires. They also read some books, articles and

magazines to gather information and ideas on how the questionnaire will be

formulated.

Validation of Treatment of Data

The statistical tool used in this study is percentage technique.

This can be illustrated by the formula where:

Pr
P= N
× 100

P = percent

Pr = partial sum of the respondent

N = total number of respondents

100 - constant
