NARRATIVE REPORT
Theme: “Improving the Health and Environmental Condition of Sitio Sta.
Monica, Upper TuyoBalanga City Bataan”
(GULAYAN SA KAPALIGIRAN, FOSTER FAMILIES, SEMINARS)
Second Semester of Academic Year 2014-2015 marked the beginning of adopting again a
new barangay for the National Service Training Program (NSTP) of Bataan Peninsula State
University, Main Campus. A place where it will become their training ground in improving
themselves to become more productive individuals and where they could seriously learned the
importance of sharing and the value of helping others. This place is located in Sitio Sta. Monica,
Upper Tuyo, Balanga City, Bataan.
November 22, 2014, an ocular visit was conducted in order to assess the needs of the
community. Survey revealed that the place was in need of health assistance and environmental
cleanliness. Out of the result, the NSTP group had decided to propose a project not definitely
answered their needs but at least lessen theproblem in the environment because we believed
that a healthy living comes with a healthy environment. The group had come up with a theme
“improving the Health and Environmental Condition”.
The project involved different activities such as having 12 Foster Families assigned to the
BSHRM and BSTM students during weekdays, the “Gulayan saKapaligiran” assigned to Saturday
classes and Seminars such as Seminar on Personal Hygiene and Sanitation and Seminar on the
Nutritional Value of Vegetables. The Gulayanarea which was a damping site before became a
friendly environment today.
The project started January 05, 2015. The students revisited the area to refresh their ideas
after a long Christmas vacation. Brain storming, planning and series of meetings were done to
finalize the project. After a week of preparations, the project was finally put into reality. The NSTP
students together with the instructors, Mrs. Zenaida H. Baino and Miss Rowena S. Badua and the
community joined hand and hand in making the project possible.
Foster families which focused on the enhancement of the shelters and the environment
was a successful one. With the evaluation conducted during their last training day, it showed that
the students did not only enhance the physical aspect of the house but they also developed a
good rapport among the members of the family until such time that when they had given the
chance to give the last words to their foster families, tears poured from some student’s eyes
because they felt within their hearts the essence of sharing and helping with their own little ways,
likewise, some family representatives also showed tears of joy.
On the other hand, the GulayansaKapaligiran was also a successful one because of the
help extended by the concerned residences who guided and assisted the students every time
they visited the project. In addition to that, the support of the Office of Extension Services of
BPSU added to its progress. Dr. HermogenesPaguia noticed the importance of the project and
appreciated the efforts of the students and the instructors that was why every time he passed by
the area he taught the students how to do things right.
Simultaneous with the Gulayan was the Seminar on Personal Hygiene and Sanitation
lectured by Lorna Oximoso, RN conducted on February 14, 2015 followed by free haircut in the
afternoon which was availed by 23 residences. Another seminar was about the Nutritional Value
of Vegetables presented by Ms. Rowena S. Baduaconducted on March 07, 2015 followed by
Cooking Contest participated by 4 contestants.
To complete the project, a general street cleaning was made possible through the
cooperation of the area coordinator, Mr. Eric Lintag, Mrs. Violetadela Rosa, the President of the
Home Owners Association, the community, the students and instructors of NSTP.
Truly this projects brought an impact in the community of Sitio Sta. Monica, Upper Tuyo,
Balanga City Bataan. Thank you to all the persons behind the success of the project.

Lessons Learned :

The community became aware with the standards of a healthy and pleasant environment
in their respective area through the promotion of having a healthy life style and a more friendly
environment. They were also encouraged to participate in their community by having this NSTP
project the “Gulayan sa Kapaligiran. They were also became aware about their personal hygiene
and sanitation and learned the importance and nutritional value of the food they eat. With the
support of the BPSU and the Local Government Unit (LGU), they have inculcated the value of
Bayanihan and good community relationship.

Participants Perceptions and Recommendations:

The community were very thankful of choosing their area as the adopted barangay of
BPSU. The NSTP projects brought a lot of help to them through having foster families, Gulayan
and the conduct of seminars.
It is being recommended that the project of the NSTP with regards to “Gulayan sa
Kapaligiran” will continue through out the year by supplying high breed seeds because it will
help a lot in the community. Same with the foster families as they not only enhanced the shelters
of the families but also develop good camaraderie and relationship with each other.
Furthermore, they also would like to have another seminars relating to livelihood that will give
them source of income.
