Competency: Describe how electrical energy and formed and used
Matter consist of tiny particles called atom. The atom is made up of smaller sub atomic
particles. Two of these particles are electrically charged. The protons are positively
charged while the electrons are negatively charged. When electrons flow in a conductor,
electricity is produced.
There are many ways of generating electricity.
1. electricity generated from the sun can be directly converted by a photocell.
2. electricity used at home comes from electric power plant
-Power plants distribute the electricity they produce to the homes of consumers
- an electric power plant may be a fossil-fueled thermal plant. The chemical energy of
fossil fuels (oil, and other petroleum products) is changed .
3. dry cell contains chemicals that can be converted to electrical energy
4.thermal power plant may also use coal to heat water in its boiler. When the water boils,
it is changed to steam. The power of the steam turns the turbines causing a device called
generator to run.
5. geothermal- the heat coming from beneath the earth’s surface is also used to generate
electricity
6. hydroelectric power plant- falling or moving water is also used by some power plants to
generate electricity
Electrical energy is generated by the chemical reaction that takes place inside the dry
cell. This energy enables the flashlight to light and the radio to receive waves transmitted
by a radio station.
7. biogas – generates energy for lighting, cooking, and running small engines.
Questions.
What are the different ways of generating electricity? Describe each.
Where does the electricity from your outlet come from?
Reporting
Analysis/ How do you use the electrical energy from a dry cell?
Discussion
Practice Application Brownout is one of the common problem in the Philippines. What alternative or other
means will you seek to generate electricity?
Questions.
What are the benefits from radiant energy?
Why do you think fruits and vegetable have to be exposed to radiation?
Reporting
Analysis/ What may happen when radiant energy could no longer be controlled?
Discussion When controlled how can we use it?
Questions:
What energy transformation happened when the motor run?
What do you think is the use of an electric motor?
Questions:
What happens to the bulb when the handle of the dynamo is turned?
What caused the bulb to light up?
Where did the energy come from? When does a generator produce electrical
energy?
What is a generator?
Reporting
Practice Application What will the world be like if energy cannot be changed from one form to another?
Assessment Choose the letter of the correct answer.
1. Which of the following shows mechanical-sound energy change?
a. rice cooker b. flat iron c. alarm clock
2. What energy transformation does a blender or mixer show?
a. mechanical to electrical energy
b. electrical to mechanical energy
c. mechanical to chemical energy
3. What energy transformation takes place in the engine of a typical train?
a. radiant to electrical energy
b. electrical to mechanical energy
c. chemical to mechanical energy
4. What form of energy is commonly used in kitchen appliances?
a. light energy b. electrical energy c. geothermal energy
5. What form of energy is contained in a battery or dry cell?
a. chemical energy b. sound energy c. electrical energy
Assignment Find out how the Philippines utilizes the energy from hot springs. Describe the energy transformation that occurs
in generating electricity using energy from hot springs.

Competency: Describe sound energy and its uses
ACTIVITY
Sound energy
Sound is the movement of energy through substances in longitudinal
(compression/rarefaction) waves.
Sound is produced when a force causes an object or substance to vibrate — the energy is
transferred through the substance in a wave. Typically, the energy in sound is far less than
other forms of energy.
A vibrating drum in a disco transfers energy to the room as sound. Kinetic energy from the
moving air molecules transfers the sound energy to the dancers eardrums. Notice that
Kinetic (movement) energy in the sticks is being transferred into sound energy.
Sound vibrations create sound waves which move through mediums such as air and water
before reaching our ears.
The diagram below shows how a sound wave is represented:
Sound energy is usually measured by its pressure and intensity, in special units called
pascals and decibels. Sometimes, loud noise can cause pain to people. This is called the
threshold of pain. This threshold is different from person to person. For example, teens
can handle a lot higher sound pressure than elderly people, or people who work in
factories tend to have a higher threshold pressure, because they get used to loud noise in
the factories.
Questions
1. What is sound energy?
2. How is sound energy produced?
3. How is sound energy measured?
4. Explain the effects of threshold of pain.
Reporting
Analysis/ Answer the questions from the activity card.
Discussion What unit is used in sound?
Practice Application Why do louds sound irritate the ears of town folks ?
Assessment Give the correct answer.
1. Sound energy is measured in ______.
2. The units used in sound are _______ and ________.
4. _______ creates sound waves.
5. _______ is produced when a force causes an object or substance to vibrate
