2. Your teacher will light up a candle

Precaution. Do not go near the table were the demonstration will be held.
*What did you observe?
*What is the source of energy?

Activity Distribute the activity sheets.

Presentation Instruction: Read the paragraph carefully, then answer the questions that follows.
Candles are solid fuel. These have stored chemical energy that is released when
they absorb heat. Chemical change takes place when the wick burns.
Stored chemical energy is also found in foods that animals and humans eat. When food
is digested, it combines with oxygen in the body. Food in its simplest form is used by the
cell. It is burned or oxidized to release energy. Part of this energy is used to maintain body
temperature. The rest of the energy is used to do work.
Medicines such as antibiotics contain chemical substances. These help the body
fight germs that cause certain disease.
A concentrated pack of chemical energy is found in fireworks and dynamites.
Fireworks shoot up in the air because the stored chemical energy in them is released.
Dynamites usually used in quarrying and mining can break rocks as they explode.

How is the flow of electricity showed in the picture?
Read the passage below.
Electricity is a convenient form of energy used at
home. It cannot
Be mined as coal or drilled from wells like oil.

Matter consist of tiny particles called atom. The atom is made up of smaller sub atomic
particles. Two of these particles are electrically charged. The protons are positively
charged while the electrons are negatively charged. When electrons flow in a conductor,
electricity is produced.
There are many ways of generating electricity.
1. electricity generated from the sun can be directly converted by a photocell.
2. electricity used at home comes from electric power plant
-Power plants distribute the electricity they produce to the homes of consumers
- an electric power plant may be a fossil-fueled thermal plant. The chemical energy of
fossil fuels (oil, and other petroleum products) is changed .
3. dry cell contains chemicals that can be converted to electrical energy
4.thermal power plant may also use coal to heat water in its boiler. When the water boils,
it is changed to steam. The power of the steam turns the turbines causing a device called
generator to run.
5. geothermal- the heat coming from beneath the earth’s surface is also used to generate
electricity
6. hydroelectric power plant- falling or moving water is also used by some power plants to
generate electricity
Electrical energy is generated by the chemical reaction that takes place inside the dry
cell. This energy enables the flashlight to light and the radio to receive waves transmitted
by a radio station.
7. biogas – generates energy for lighting, cooking, and running small engines.

Energy can also be carried or transferred through space in the form of radiant energy. The
radiant energy from the sun is used to dry clothes. Solar energy kills microorganism. The
sun can give your skin a good tan. The sun’s energy is used to dry fish (daing or tuyo).
The radiant energy from the sun travels through empty space. It is the source of
photosynthesis.

Activity (Optional)

Tell the story of Chernobyl accident in Russia sometime in 1986

What harm can this nuclear leak caused the environment, animals, and people in Europe?

Activity Group Activity

Presentation Read the passage below.
Nuclear energy is a form of energy that comes from the splitting or combination of
particles in the atom. The nucleus of an atom contains a large amount of energy. This
energy may be used through nuclear fission. Nuclear fission happens when the nucleus of
a heavy atom like uranium or plutonium, is split apart. This splitting then releases a large
amount of energy.
Nuclear energy is proven to be beneficial when controlled properly in a plant. Nuclear
fission is capable of supplying energy for many homes and factories. Energy from nuclear
change may either be helpful or harmful. A nuclear fission in a bomb can destroy an entire
city. However nuclear energy is useful if its generation is controlled.
Submarines powered by nuclear energy can travel underwater for a long period of time
without refueling. Space explorations also benefit from this kind of energy. Nuclear fission
produces large amount of electricity using small amounts of fuel.
When dangerous amount of radiation escapes from a nuclear power plant, health of
mankind is in danger. It can cause diseases. Physical deformities and eventual death to
humans and other living organism may occur.
Another problem in the use of nuclear power is the disposing of radioactive waste. Fission
reactors produce low-level radioactive wastes. At present used radioactive fuel is
reprocessed. Others are buried deep underground.
Nuclear fusion is the combination of light nuclei to produce a heavier one. Light atoms like
hydrogen and helium combine release large amount of energy. Unlike fission, fusion uses
cheap raw material – water. It produces fewer dangerous waste products.
Questions.
What are the benefits from nuclear energy?

Sound energy
Sound is the movement of energy through substances in longitudinal
(compression/rarefaction) waves.
Sound is produced when a force causes an object or substance to vibrate — the energy is
transferred through the substance in a wave. Typically, the energy in sound is far less than
other forms of energy.
A vibrating drum in a disco transfers energy to the room as sound. Kinetic energy from the
moving air molecules transfers the sound energy to the dancers eardrums. Notice that
Kinetic (movement) energy in the sticks is being transferred into sound energy.
Sound vibrations create sound waves which move through mediums such as air and water
before reaching our ears.
The diagram below shows how a sound wave is represented:

Sound energy is usually measured by its pressure and intensity, in special units called
pascals and decibels. Sometimes, loud noise can cause pain to people. This is called the
threshold of pain. This threshold is different from person to person. For example, teens
can handle a lot higher sound pressure than elderly people, or people who work in
factories tend to have a higher threshold pressure, because they get used to loud noise in
the factories.
