CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

When student go to school, they create their own thinking or what they want to be in the

future. Now that our society implemented K12 it helped us choose our course in college. Starting

in the 2012-2013 school year, the education system of the Philippines was enhanced from the ten

years of basic education to a 12-year program through an initiative called the K-12 Education Plan

sponsored by the Department of Education according to our research.

One of the objectives of the Department of Education’s K-12 program is to produce

graduates who are equipped with knowledge and skills to be productive citizens and an additional

work force to promote economic development even after high school.

But some of the students choose their track because of their parents want or maybe what

they want, but not necessary needs, and mostly students waste their time, effort and money when

they choose a wrong strand of their path in college course.

The career specializations offered by the K-12 curriculum serves as a stepping stone for

the students to plan up and act upon on their chosen career yet some parents think that what they

suggest to their children in what course to pursue is better, yet they tend to ignore what their

children desire. Other factors include: financial stability, university prestige and of course,

practicality. And because of these, some students graduate in strand that they do not really like.
One of the suggested elucidations is for the parents to talk to their children if they will

continue. Then it is up to the child whether he/she will agree or not. Other solution involves letting

the child decide on their own but being aware of what is going to be waste. Deciding for oneself

helps the individual to develop and progress in life.

Senior high school is a preparation for college, for us to be ready taking improved lessons.

So that student can be more familiar with the things that are related to ABM and to get used to all

of It can also be a practice in their upcoming college life.

They say, that it is still alright if you choose a course in college that’s not related to the

strand that you chose in your Senior High School. The Researcher want to make their life easier

by choosing a strand specifically ABM that’s related to the course that student want to pursue

when they go to college, because researcher will have knowledge about it already and it will be

less difficult for us to study.

According to local social enterprise edukasyon.ph Accountancy, Business and

Management (ABM) is one of the most consistently marked as the top choices of the students in

Senior High School student might say that choosing your track is an easy way but this is the path

that when you are going too prepared to your course in college. And also this is your future work

and the main topic in our research

Researcher conduct this study for students to not be confused by choosing their strand and

also to be aware of not wasting anything by introducing this study. As a researcher, this study

orders us to know the factors that affect students’ decision in choosing their college course

specifically ABM students. This study also includes the effect of these factors to psychological

aspects of the youth.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the factors that effect of whether or not to pursue the current

strand or track of grade-12 students of STI Munoz in choosing their preferred program in college.

Specifically, this study would like to find the answer of the following questions:

1. How ABM strand affects the decision of students in continuing college career?

2. What are the factors affects the perspective in choosing course in college among the

grade 12 ABM student

3. What is the relationship of strand in choosing course/degree in college among grade 12

ABM students?

ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY

In this study, an assumption is an unexamined belief, provide a basis to develop theories

and research instrument and implementation of research process.

- Among all the factors that affect students’ decision in choosing their college course, parents

and financial stability have the most impact on them.

- There are significant differences between the factors that affect college decision-making in

percent of the participants.

- In college or maybe not when we are not going to pursue ABM and we want other courses

doesn’t related

- The influence of their parents or maybe the friends that they are associated with them
- They must have a background study when they’re go to k-12 curriculum. It will make easier

to proceed your preferred course in college

- This may help or maybe not, the reason why we have a stock knowledge when we pursue

ABM

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study will focus on Senior High school student from college of STI Muñoz covered

by grade 12 specifically ABM students, The researchers will make a one on one interview with

the respondents or by interview guide that they will able to answer the researchers will pick 30

Senior High school from the college of STI Muñoz who is ABM and will be interviewed. The

students are intended to answer the questions that are needed in the research study. Only Grade

12 students (ABM) from STI Munoz can participate and volunteer as the source of information

in this research study. This study also focuses on its title “factors affecting the perspective in

choosing course in college among the grade 12 ABM student of STI Muñoz ̵ Edsa” in this study

researchers analyze where the student difficulty when they decide their preferred course in

college and conducting a study where if they will continue their prefers strand in college.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of the study is that if we provide a good research about the given topic

this will benefit the students in understanding and pursuing their chosen career for the better

future with less stress of continuing what they’re really wanting a career. Free will determines
one’s capability without the burden of the student trying to gain reputation in their own way and

understanding of their choice in life and conducting this research. This study will be beneficial to

the following:

Students - This study will give the selected students for this significance and help to understand

the decision making on choosing their track and also pressuring this in college for them not to

waste their time, effort at the same time money that they are going to use. The one who’s also

included in this study will have an idea of being aware to choose their track rightly, specifically to

the ABM that we are going to interview, for them to also be aware that if they are going to choose

their preferred strand it should be what they want because this will lead them in their preferred

college course

Parents - This study will help them to be the first one to remind fellow students what they want

to be in the future by guiding them, and parent will know how to guide their child for choosing the

right tract

Teachers - As the ones who have a huge part in the teaching-learning process, this study would

help them to reassert and focus more on their fields and subsequently cater a better learning

experience for students, especially for the teachers who would be teaching in Senior High School

School Administrators - This study would enable them to find ways and means to improve the

students’ abilities and skills that would empower them to pursue meaningful careers. They can

also gain insights into the quality of education that they currently offer to the K-12 students

Community - the community shall also benefit from the study in a sense that they are vital to the

development of the school and as such, they would eagerly give support in the future development

of this school
Future Researchers - This study would serve as reference that would help in conducting their

own research studies.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The study is anchored on the theory of Donald Super which focuses on the development of

life roles over the life span with emphasis on inter-role congruence. His vocational concept as a

part of self-concept is formed; it is the driving force that establishes a career pattern one will follow

through life (Super, 1990). Vocational developmental tasks are derived from vocational stages

which provides framework for vocational behavior and attitudes.

This theory is found to be appropriate because of its stressfulness in terms of developing a

career plan that will guide the individual in choosing his/her career pathway.

Another theory adopted for the research is David Tiedeman’s“Self Development

Approaches to Career”. Tiedeman believes that evolving ego-identity is of central importance in

the career development process. Tiedeman referred to the evolving self-in-situation from the

earliest awareness of self to point at which individual becomes capable of evaluating experiences,

anticipating, and imagining future goals, and storing experiences in memory for future reference

with Tiedeman’scontext of Erik Erikson’s eight psychosocial crises. Self-in-situation, self-in-

world and the orientation of work evolve as one resolves the psychosocial crises of life. Tiedeman

therefore conceptualized a paradigm for problem-solving as the mechanism of career decision

making. The paradigm covers four aspects of anticipation or preoccupation (exploration,

crystallization, choice, and clarification) and three aspects of implementation of adjustment

(induction, reformation, and integration).

Tiedeman stressed out why individual change their courses of action because of external

factors because of external forces (such as the call of the armed forces, an economic crisis, the

work setting itself) or by broad psychological drives (such as unmet needs, changing aspirations,

role diffusion). According to the prescribed sequence, a new decision unfolds and must be made,

beginning with exploration and eventually reaching integration. If integration is not reached once

again, the individual may adapt to a career environment or may simply withdraw and begin a new

search for eventual integration.

The rationale between these two theories is one follows a vocational self-concept which is

a driving force that establishes a career pattern one will follow through life but there are some

factors could might altered this pattern. These factors, such as external forces (called of armed

services, economic crisis, and work setting itself) and psychological drives (unmet needs, changing

aspirations, role diffusion) altered the career patterns of individual.

Super said that indecisiveness is a period in developmental process when interests have not

been fully crystallized. Individuals lead to discriminate two or more choices of two or more

occupational objectives when uncertainty about future occurs. Tiedemann noted that as individuals

become more aware of the developing character of the career process itself, they are more willing

to make changes and to alter or redefine a decision.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The focus of this study was undertaken by the following conceptual framework shown in

Figure 1 which has a three part process: the input, process and output.

This figure shows the outcome of our generated information to support our research paper.

The input shows that the study is being conducted to identify the study of business planning for

DEFINITION OF TERMS

ABM strand – In this study, the ABM strand is one of the academic tracks. This means

accountancy, business and management. This track also is for those who plan on taking up

course that is relate to ABM

Accountancy –In this study, the accountancy is a major course that you can take when you

choose ABM strand and also a practice of recording, classifying and reporting on business

transactions for a business.

Business Management – In this study, business management isan ideal choice for anyone

wanting to fast-track their career or learn more about the realities of starting or managing a

business

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) – In this study, this is a member of an officially accredited

professional body of accountants.

K-12 Curriculum –In this study, k-12 is a program that covers kindergarten and 12 years of

basic education to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong

learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development,

employment, and entrepreneurship.

Senior High School – In this study, it is the second part of secondary education under the K-12

program, wherein the students would take up the subjects under their career pathway

specialization
Taxes – In this study, taxes is a compulsory contribution to state revenue levied by the

government on workers' income and business profits or added to the cost of some goods,

services, and transactions.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

LOCAL LITERATURE

Stage and Hossler (2000) agreed that students’ externally-acquired views of self are

related to their academic success. They also believed there is a relationship between students

‘goals and their success in college and that how students have gathered Information about

college and careers may be linked to retention. The connection of this Review of related

literature in this study is that They proposed that the Effects of external influences such as

parents, teachers, and friends on students’ career Choices may play a role in students’

“subsequent satisfaction, and possibly ultimate Persistence” (p. 182).

In the Philippines, initiatives for career guidance started when the Philippine government

got alarmed with the growing number of unemployed college graduates and some who got

employed in areas not related to their specialization as cited by Braza and Guillo (2015).

According to Pascual (2014), “Unemployment rate in the country is commonly associated with

the misfit graduates produced by universities and colleges and the workforce needed by

different companies. The wrong choice of course taken by most of high school students adds to

the unemployment and underemployment rate of newly graduate students. The students’ lack of

career information, and wrong decisions was found to be the most contributing factor to the

country’s problem on unemployment and job mismatch and underemployment. As cited by

Braza and Guillo (2015), the report of Labor Force Survey done in January 2012 revealed that
there are around 7.1 million underemployed Filipinos or an underemployment of 19.4 percent

(Santamaria, J.D. 2008)

FOREIGN LITERATURE

Getting along with others is in some ways related to the preceding one, because the

way people feel about themselves influences the way others feel. If they feel friendly and self-

confident, others are likely to look at them in the same way. Most young people want very much

to be liked and to be included in activities of the groups that interest, this is the connection of this

literature in are study. (Robert H. Seashore (1962), Your Goals and You: A Guidance Handbook,

Science Research Associates USA)

Another study that establishes the influence of personality on career choice is of Dr.

Claudia Harzer and companions of University of Zurich, which focuses on the character strengths

of an individual and how it affects their career. From interviews of over 1,000 working people,

their study shows that the degree of positive experiences increases with the number of personal

character strengths, or so-called “signature strengths”, applied at work. This would imply that

understanding what roles a person are best suited to base on his/her personality is what will make

him/her the most happy at work. (Harzer, et.al, 2012),

Parents play vital roles in the choice of career amongst their children. Olayinka

(2005) stresses that parent sometimes censoriously set up standard worthy of emulation for their

children and this motivated them to be achievement oriented Roe (2004) States that, that choice

of career among students is partly influenced by the behaviors of their parents towards the

particular child and the condition of the home environment

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

Local

According to Dulay (2018), entitled us the challenges and opportunities of an ABM

student, retrieved from britesparks.edu.ph/articles that When the K-12 bill was signed by former

Philippine President Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino, it was a lot to take in as I was only in 6th grade

at that time. This means that there would be six years of primary education, four years of Junior

High School, and two years of Senior High School before students can move into higher

education. Right then and there, I have decided that I would never let myself struggle and go to

a specialized strand focusing on Math. I had this mindset that ABM would be difficult. From the

name itself, Accountancy, Business, and Management, one would think that this strand would

consist of complex subjects such as economics, business math, accounting and so on. The ABM

strand might not seem as flexible as the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

(STEM) strand, but in reality, it is. It can open as many doors for ABM students as STEM does

for the students under their strand. Being in the ABM strand does not limit one to a managerial

position and it does not limit one to being an entrepreneur. A student under the ABM strand can

excel in various sectors and they do not necessarily have to work in the business field.

The response of Grade 12 ABM students to the difficult tasks in Fundamentals of

Accounting and Business Management can be affected by positive emotion, engagement,

relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. These five elements shape the wellbeing of the
students as they study. The ways these elements move within their lives affect their thoughts,

motivation and preferences. This means that how the students react to the subject or lesson is

mainly caused by the series of events from their environment, relationships, and accomplishments

and how the students took the experiences including the challenges and failures.

a more time to think on what will be the course that you really want in a future also you will be

more prepared of it.

According to Ambong (2017) entitled as "Factors that influences Senior High School

FOREIGN STUDIES

An article posted by Adecco UK (Adecco UK, 2015), a part of a Swiss

multinational human resource consulting company of the same name, states that it is worth

finding out what type of worker an individual is with the increasing of employers utilizing

personality and psychometric testing Procedures to analyze the employee’s attributes beyond

qualifications. It is also stated in the article that “choosing a job to which an individual is

inherently suited rather than just able to convince the interviewer that he/she is interested in the

position will make him/her a happier, more productive employee.” There are many methods for

assessing personality type, and the most common is the RIASEC model of the psychologist John

L. Holland (Holland, 1973), which is developed from his theory which postulates that people

project self- and world-of-work views onto occupational titles and make career
According to Lee (2018) entitled as "Who Influences College Students’ Career

the course and non-course experiences that help you achieve what you really goals.
CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The descriptive method was employed in this study. Descriptive research also known as

statistical research, describe data and characteristics about the population or phenomenon being studied.

this study entitled "Perspective of grade 12 ABM students of STI Munoz college to continue their

preferred strand in college", the purpose of this study is to identify and know how k-12 affect their

decisions making with the low possible of changing their wrong choose in college course for them not to

waste their knowledge that they gain in the past 11-12 curriculum. Therefore, the research method the

research used is descriptive research method to provide an accurate description, characteristic, increase

knowledge and awareness and to describe the decision of the student. The main goal of this type of

research is to describe the date and characteristic about the decisions making in certain business. The

idea behind this type of research is to study frequencies, average, and other statistical calculations.

Descriptive research mainly done when a researcher wants to gain a better understanding of a specific

topic it is scientific method which involves observing and describing the behavior of the subject without

influencing it in any way.

Sampling Technique

This research study “Perspective of Grade 12 Abm Students of STI Munoz College to Continue

Their Prefer Strand in College” can state as purposive sampling. It is a non-probability technique that

involves the conscious selection by the researcher of certain people to include in this study.

Participants are selected because they have particular characteristics that are of interest to the research.

It involves the selected participants according to the researcher set criteria, though it is the voluntary
participation of the students who reached the criteria because of the required number of respondents

required for the study.

Research Instrument

The instrument used was a Semi structured interview to gather needed data. Recording will be

draft based on the researchers reading, previous studies, literature, published and unpublished thesis that

are relevant in the study. In the preparation of the instrument for the study, the requirements in the

designing of a good data collection instrument for the study were considered. For instance, the researcher

had one factor and under the sated factor valid statements describing the situation to accommodate the

knowledge preparedness of the respondents

Semi structured interview contain open-ended questions and discussions may diverge from the

interview guide, it is generally best to tape-record interviews and later transcript these tapes for

analysis.

For initial interview for the respondents to supplement the data derived from the

questionnaires, casual conversations were conducted with some respondents to clarify and make

them understand doubtful responses reflected in the questionnaire

A interview guide is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions and the other

prompts for the purpose of the gathering information from respondents. It is a expensive way to

gather data from a potentially number of respondents. The interview guide was the main tool used

to study in data gathering.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

In data gathering, the researchers followed a proper procedure in order to achieve and collect

reliable information for the study.

1. The researchers collected information from the reading and the thesis related to the study that

can help in creating the Semi structured interview.

2. The researchers analysed the information gathered from the related literature and studies in

order to make reliable Semi structured interview.

3. The information gathered helps the researchers in formulating a reliable Semi structured

interview.

4. The researchers prepared the interview guide with the help of information gathered and covered

all stated in the statement of the problem.

5. The researchers presented it to their research professor and asked for his approval before the

researchers were finally able to reproduced enough copies of the interview guide intended for

the selected respondents to answers;

6. The researchers produced the Semi structured interview.

7. Before conducting the survey, the researchers made a letter of request to have a permission to

give the interview guide to the respondents of the paper;

8. The researchers conduct 30 student and give the survey form to the student that are willing to

participate in the study.

9. After collecting the data gathered by the researchers from the respondent, the data gathered

were graphical by the researchers.

Population and Sampling

The respondents of the study were ABM student who studies in STI College Munoz-Edsa

and having struggle in their decision making. In this study, the researchers selected students in

College of STI Muñoz who would be part of the study as the student were willing to participate

in the study. Since the required respondent of the study were only ABM student, researcher

selected 30 student from ABM grade 12 who reached the researchers criteria

Statistical Treatment

The data were analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage

distribution. These will be aided with tables. Percentage was used to find the ratio of frequency

of response to the total of respondents by applying this

Formula:

𝑓
P = 𝑛 𝑥100

Where:

P = percentage

F = frequency

N = no. of respondents

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter discusses the summary, findings and conclusions of the study. Recommendations

are also forwarded in this chapter.

Summary of Findings

This study was conducted to determine the factors affecting the perspective in choosing

course in college among the grade 12 ABM student of STI Muñoz ̵ EDSA

Choosing a course track should consider different factors in order to come a virtuous decision. As

observed most of the students in senior high school has a strand that been chooses by parents they

should take up. Most of them have the tendency to have lower grades because they found the strand

not interested. Here are different effects on students in the strand that they take is not relevant to

the development that they want. A few of them will continue the strand they have and some will

decide to shift or if not, their grades are low. Some students who have the strand that they don’t

want to tend not to take the strand seriously and their goal will only to graduate.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following:

I Career Preferences.

1. Why did you choose ABM strand?
