EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In today’s world speed is the buzz word and to remain on the top is also one of the most

difficult things to do. Nowadays, competition is the first thing that comes to the mind of every

organization. Training and development is the key to organization robustness. The competitive

capability of an organization is largely dependent on the collective competence and the skills of

its people.

The objectives of this report project was to study the effectiveness of training and development

on employee at Interocean pvt ltd. The study involved understanding the types of training being

provided in different organization in current times. Research methodology was used in the

project report. This was done with the help of a primary survey by filling the questionnaire.

This made me appreciate the expectations of workforce today which is not restricted to

remunerationalone.

The first section of my report deals with a detailed company profile. It includes the company’s

history: its activities and operations, organizational structure, etc. this section attempts to give

detailed information about the company and the nature of its functioning. The second section

deals with performance appraisal. In this section, a brief conceptual explanation to performance

appraisal is given. It contains the definition, process and significance of performance appraisal.

In the third section of my report, I have conducted a research study to evaluate the process of

performance appraisal at Interocean pvt ltd. This section also contains my findings,

conclusions, suggestions and feedback. The fourth and final section of this report consists of
extra information that I related to the main contents of the report. These annexure includes the

Questionnaire on the basis of which the primary data was collected and research study was

conducted.
CHAPTER -1

PROFILE OF THE COMPANY

Establishment of the Company

The INTEROCEAN group was launched by Captain Kailash C. Saigal in 1961 with the
formation of INTEROCEAN SHIPPING COMPANY as a Ship Broking house. After years
of success in the industry and some pioneering cargo fixtures, the group diversified into various
other activities. Following companies were formed to assist this growth:

The Group’s corporate office is based in New Delhi with branches spread along the Indian
Coastline, Chittagong (Bangladesh) and Colombo (Sri Lanka). Our guiding philosophy is to
continuously set the bar higher, set new benchmarks in advancing quality and professional
services on all fronts. In this extremely competitive environment, INTEROCEAN has carved a
niche for itself due to our competence and integrity.
All operational issues are directed by the Management Committee under the dynamic
leadership of the C.E.O. Mr. Arjun Saigal. The Group of Companies collectively employs over
700 personnel worldwide.

1.1 Objectives of the study

(b) Analyse application of management concepts in real business situations-degree to which


applied/not applied,

(c) Understand a business entity from management perspective in different


functional areas,

(d) Develop skills in technical report writing through data collection, data analysis, data
presentation and draw lessons cogently vis-à-vis a given firm or company, and

(e) Enhance analytical abilities of students.

1.3 Product range of the company
DIVISIONS AND SERVICES

(a) SHIP AGENCY

Handling more than 2000 port calls annually via our extensive network of own offices
(Interocean does not use sub-agents anywhere), Agency Division has been growing in strength
each year based on our uncompromising quality of services and unbiased reporting. With real
time updates and close liaison with all concerned, we provide a smooth turnaround for all
vessels, keeping principals always in control of the port operations. Interocean offers services
as Owners Agents, Charterers Nominated Agents or as Charterers / Owners / Shippers /
Receivers Protective Agents.
Company offices are manned by senior marine personnel and highly experienced staff who are
equipped to handle all kinds of issues pertaining to a vessels port call. Continuous in-house
training and pre-induction deputation to other commercial departments with-in the organization
gives our operations executives useful knowledge of relevant Charter Party clauses which
enhances their understanding of the principal’s expectations from an Agent.

A centralized control from the head office in New Delhi ensures that our principals receive the
advantages of fluent communications and a single point of contact for all matters including
operations, finance and any other vessel requirements. All queries are handled promptly by our
competent staff in close liaison with the port office concerned.

The extensive data bank that maintain for various commodities moving in / out of India and
reports generated therein are relied upon by all major Trading Houses and Ship Owners across
the world.
In-keeping with the growing demands of the Indian market and to cater best to the client's
specific requirements, the division is segregated into the following desks :

• DRY Desk : For handling all Dry commodities including Fertilizers, Ore, Metals, Coal, Coke,
etc.
• TANKER Desk : For handling Clean Petroleum Products, Crude, Chemicals, Liquefied
gases, etc.
• AGRI Desk : For handling all Agri commodities including Veg Oils, Molasses, Sugar,
Meals, Grains, etc.
• CREW CARE & SPARES Desk : For handling crew changes, medical emergencies, spares
delivery and other such husbandry requirements
• ENQUIRY Desk : For prompt handling of queries from our principals pertaining to port
operations, restrictions, load / discharge rates, estimated PDA, etc.

(b) SHIP OWNING

Apart from assisting our principals in acquiring all types of new buildings or second hand
vessels, Interocean also maintains its own fleet of specialized tonnage specific to the needs of
the Indian Market. These operations are handled via Group Company Interocean Navigation
Ltd. They are constantly looking at acquisition of additional tugs and specialized crafts.

Thier previous fleets of Tugs operating off the coast of Gujarat were recently de-commissioned
after years of exemplary and reliable service along the Indian coast line.

Interocean Navigation Ltd has now diversified into speed launches, a concept unique to Indian
Ports. These launches not only ensure quicker trips to and from the ship thus resulting in
shorter port stay but also are a more reliable and safe option for the vessel's crew.

The first of the series, KCS-1 is deployed at Kandla port and we shall in due course expand this
service to all the other major ports in India.
SUPPLY OF SHIP SPARES

The procurement of good quality used and unused ship board equipment is facilitated
by Interocean’s wide spread presence in the demolition yards of Alang (India) and Chittagong
(Bangladesh). The spare parts are procured from the demolition sites and carefully inspected
and certified at our stockyards in Alang, Kandla and Mumbai before being Against specific
requirements, we may also supply other good quality equipment such as bearing pairs, heat
exchangers, fresh water generators, pumps, motors, anchors, chains, firefighting equipment,
communication / navigation equipment, deck equipment, other cosmetic fittings, etc.

Delivery of Spares is very Time Critical and essential for effective fleet management. This fact
INTEROCEAN fully understand and take it upon to ensure that a cost effective and reliable
solution the team of technical experts present at the demolition yards have tremendous
experience in this field and dilige.

CREWING AND MANAGEMENT

They are involved in Crewing and Management services for various clients and supply officers
and crew for all types of vessels.
Good Officers and crew are must for effective functioning of any ship. They realize this very
crucial aspect of Crewing and Management and ensure that well qualified, fully trained and
experienced personnel are provided to our clients.
Besides offering Crewing and Management services all across the Indian coast through our
office network, we can also arrange for specific courses, appraisals, certification and other such
requirements of our clients.
In addition to providing marine personnel for sea going vessels, they are also active in
management of Offshore Marine Crafts and other support and service vessels being used for
Oil and Gas Exploration, Drilling and Production.
MARIEN, INDUSTRIAL & INSURANCE SURVEYS

This division conducts surveys on behalf of various principals including Manufacturing


Industries and Underwriters located in India and overseas. Our experienced team comprising of
Master Mariners and engineers are fully equipped to conduct all types of surveys.

They conduct hull & machinery surveys and cargo inspections on behalf of Ship Owners,
Charterers, Shippers, Receivers and Average Adjusters. Where required, they can make
available Port Captains and Superintendents to attend to vessels at most ports east of Suez.

Empaneled with the four subsidiaries of General Insurance Corporation, we also perform
technical surveys for local insurance companies as well as correspondents of foreign
underwriters. These include loss assessment, risk inspection and surveys for insurance claims
filed under marine, engineering, fire and other insurance policies

CONSULTANCY SERVICES

Complement of experienced Senior Executives comprising of Master Mariners and former


senior management of relevant Government Undertakings (Ports, etc.) who hold a wealth
of knowledge is able to provide reliable and proficient Consultancy, Project Reporting,
etc. to various commercial sectors including the Shipping Industry. Areas of consultancy
offered are
Voyage calculation and comprehensive guidance for Ship Operation. Inputs are also
drawn from our Ship Broking, Ship Agency, Ship Management, Survey and other
divisions so as to execute the business successfully.
(a) Formation of Shipping Companies, feasibility reports, economic projections,
financials, etc.
(b) Representation of foreign vendors for negotiating supply contracts with Indian
companies including Government undertakings.
(c) Project Development, Marketing Surveys, Research & Data Compilation.

NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING

They provide an extensive range of Non Destructive Testing services for


radiographic examination of machinery, components, storage tanks, pipes and
vessel weld joints, semi-submersible and submersible pipelines. The range of
services include :
(a) Radiographic Testing (RT)
(b) Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
(c) Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging for Corrosion Checks by ‘D Meter’
(d) Magnetic Particle Testing
(e) Stress Relieving
However, depending on our client’s specific needs, other kinds of inspection /
testing, like visual inspection may also be performed by our team of expert
Radiographers operating out of our offices spread across India.
POWER PROJECTS

Ever increasing demand of power, pollution levels and cost of mineral fuels has created an
urgent need for establishing renewable sources of energy. Wind Energy Generators are a cost
effective and environment friendly source of power.

The advantages of wind energy are many. It is clean, non polluting and is also a renewable
resource while fossil fuels are not. It does not produce any green house gases or causes
depletion of ozone layer. Besides it is also economically effective for a nation like India
which is dependent on large imports for it's energy requirements.

Interocean operates ten such projects in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat with
plans to install more of these generators in the future.

TRADING

Their Trading Division is equipped to develop all proposals with no limitation of product
or value. A team of dynamic Trade Executives is available to successfully develop and
execute proposals received by them.

The long term association with most reputed and reliable suppliers, manufacturers and
buyers both in India and across the globe helps us in sourcing the best quality goods at
the most economical prices.

With the knowledge, experience and confidence gained over the years, we are capable of
conceptualizing the requirements of our clients and arrange sourcing exactly as per their
specifications and budgets. Committed to achieve the highest level of customer
satisfaction, our team is capable of providing innovative solutions to all your needs
anywhere in the world.
The port offices across the country assist in sourcing suitable and competitive products as well as
to earmark manufacturers or consumers of products to be traded. With inputs from the in house
Ship Broking and Port Agency divisions, we are able to identify the trade patterns into and out of
India as well as to establish the reliability, financial stability and available infrastructure of the
Indian ‘buyer’ or ‘seller’. This proves to be a significant guiding factor for concluding business
and avoiding wastage of time and resources.

TRAVEL SERVICES

INTEROCEAN Tours & Travel is fully licensed by the government of India as well as
accredited by IATA. This division caters to in house travel requirements including those
of our visiting guests, clients, joining and off signing crew, etc.

Additionally the division also offers comprehensive and cost effective travel solutions,
ie. air/rail/road transport solutions, accommodation solutions, sightseeing and visa
management etc. to both business and holiday travellers within India and overseas.
The Travel desk also provides specialized crew care services to on / off signing crew and
officers for vessel’s calling Indian Ports. Our trained executives arrange quick clearances
and smooth transfers for the crew to join their vessels on time.

2.1 Environmental Analysis of Interocean Pvt Ltd.

A Environmental analysis is a close look at a company’s strengths, weakness,

oppourtunities and threats in terms of important factors such as the economy, the

product, staff resources, competition, technology, legislation, consumer trends,

environment, and etc.It is a common tool used in organizational planning and

strategy development. The basic assumption of a swot analysis is that

organizations must align internal activities with external realities to be successful.

Strengths and weakness are essentially internal to the organization and relate to

matters concerning resources and programmes within the company whereas

opportunities and threats are external factors confronting a company such as new

technologies, competition etc.The four factors can be described as follows:

2.7 Variation/ Deviation in Practices Followed by interocean pvt.ltd.

In interocean pvt.ltd., my role was trainee in the organization, During my summer

internship I found that Classroom teaching helps the student by making

conceptual base clear, but on the job training is the practical way, which helps the

students to get practical knowledge of the concept. Normally the students are not

aware of actual requirement. I learned how to apply theoretical knowledge and

principles, facts into practice of various concepts of finance, HR, IT, Accounts,

Operations, Marketing etc.

Working as a summer trainee at interocean pvt.ltd. was a wonderful experience,

it gave me immense understanding about how companies are making business

through various ways.

FINDINGS/ RESULTS

After going through the functional analysis, I have found that:

4.1 Findings from the study

The data collected and analyzed and general observation has proven that Aditya aggarwal
promoters ltd. has done remarkable job in its Human resource development.

The main findings are as follows:

(a) Each and every employee is well prepared to meet today’s challenges.
(b) The organization gives encouragement in career planning for every employee.
(c) There are employees in all experience level in the organization.
(d) The internal department of core competencies and continuous process improvements has made

(e) The management is showing their full efforts for the growth of Interocean Shipping (India) Pvt.

(g) The management is showing their individual attention to each and every employee for their
betterment and to groom their skills.

4.2 Suggestions

(a) Create awareness about customer’s requirements among the employees by maintaining high
level of motivation and focus.
(b) Increase the competence levels among the employees by giving suitable Training and
Development Program.
(c) Identify the competencies and behavior pattern to be developed in each individual by obtaining
there feedback and requirements.
(d) Provide training to the employees so that they get better knowledge, skills and attitude.
(e) Convert Interocean Shipping (India) Pvt. Ltd. into a ‘learning and development organization’ to
make it a “GLOBAL PLAYER AND LEADER”.
(f) Make new proposals for employee engagements and stress management

4.3 Conclusions

(a) Interocean Shipping (India) Pvt. Ltd. is a reputed real estate developer company which can and
will become a National player in near future.
(b) The employees are highly committed and dedicated towards work.
(c) Being an Indian company it follows the norm of India culture and ensures high level of
discipline in the organization.
(d) The HR department in ISPL is comprised of highly intelligent and dedicated professionals who
cater to needs of various lines of businesses run by the company.
(e) Also the company ensures that the contribution of employees is ably applauded by giving
various monetary and non – monetary benefits.
(f) The various business verticals and HR Line managers are strongly connected so as to ensure that
the best talent is found and employed in the company.
(g) An open culture is adopted and good suggestions are always welcomed by the management
irrespective of its source.
(h) Recruitment and selection process due to the nature of business is an ongoing activity. So, it
was a justified move to go ahead with my internship at ISPL.
