On 8th of March 2016, I had went for my School Based Experience in Sekolah

Kebangsaan Permai Indah, Bukit Mertajam, Pulau Pinang. I had done my observation for
assignment by entering the class to watch and observe an English teacher who were teaching
the students of Year 3 UPM. I sat in the class and watched how the teaching practices is done
by the teacher and how she suits the learning styles of pupils in the classroom. The classroom
in SKPI is not streamed based on their level of achievement. Thus, one class had a different
level of students which are the bright one, medium and the weak one. It was a challenge for
the teachers to control the classroom and to teach the classroom as there are different level
of students who cannot keep up with the same level of difficulties. Thus, the teacher had
divided the class in groups which they will be sitting with their own group with the same level.
Those who are bright will be given a more challenging task than the weak ones. The weak
one will be guided and facilitated by the teacher. In class 3 UPM, there was one students who
had a learning disabilities and he was in the Linus programme. Thus, the teacher will always
give him a full attention and facilititate him more than the other students. Based on my
observation with the special students, he could only read the alphabet until the letter “E”.
Based on the discipline, there was no problem for the teacher to control the class. When giving
task to students, the teacher prepared 3 different level of task in the same topic. They sat in
group and do the task together as a groupwork. When I ask the teacher whether she is using
any teaching aids in teaching English, she said that she don’t like using teaching aids as it is
troublesome and it is quite hard. The teacher use both English and also Malay to translate the
instruction or sentences to the students. She only use 70% of English language in the class
as she said that most of the students could not understand well in English. So, she had to
translate every sentences she spoke in Malay to ensure the students understand the
instructions. Only 3 students in the class who are fluent and can converse in English with the
teacher. The teacher still follows the KSSR module when teaching. The day I entered the
class, she was teaching speaking and reading. In speaking, she will ask the students opinion
on something and the students will answer her. If she heard any grammar or pronounciaiton
mistakes, she will correct them right away. She will reinforce the students to speak in English
rather than speaking in Malay because in speaking lesson the students need to use as much
English language as they can. From the observation, I can conclude that the English teacher
knows how to adapt with the situation with various kind of students with a different level. She
has her own teaching styles and methodology to teach English to the students with mixed
level of abilities in one classroom.
