an inch of rain, bringing the monthly total up to 1.53

I am writing to let you know that our Verizon-
Cellular Plus at 54147 Us Hwy 2 will be giving away
free backpacks filled with school supplies on Saturday,
July 27 from 10 am to noon.
We are excited to be able to give back to our local
community and help students kick off the school year
with a brand-new backpack. We would like to help
make it a little easier for families to afford these essential
supplies, so students start off the school year prepared
and confident.
Our Verizon-Cellular Plus Backpack to School
program is one that involves employees and customers.
We initiated an employee program to donate backpacks
and are also accepting donations from guests in our
store. Each backpack that is donated at our store will be
distributed to children right here in our community.
A child must be present with an adult to claim their
free backpack and no purchase is necessary to receive a
backpack. There are a limited number available and will
be distributed while supplies last. One per student.

USNS Comfort
The USNS T-20AH Comfort, a
US Naval Hospital ship has completed
it’s first stop at the Port of Mantra,
Ecuador on a 6 month humanitarian
tour of South America.
The floating hospital is home to 320 medical
professionals from the United States, Argentina, Canada,
Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru.
The thing that makes this ship unique is that there
is a sailor from Hinsdale aboard. Byron J. Fjeld, Hinsdale
High School class of 2007 joined the Navy in November
of that year as a seaman recruit and ten years later after
earning his second class chevrons he was commissioned
as an Ensign in the USN Medical Corps.
He earned his RN degree while in the ROTC
program at Lewis and Clark State College in Moscow,
Idaho being commissioned in December of 2017.
Byron and his wife Samantha are the proud
parents of two boys, Matthew, ( 4 going on 21 says his
grandmother Kay) and Mason (will be two next week)
who take very good care of their mother while Byron is
on deployment.
At the Comfort’s first stop in Ecuador the medicos
treated 7,799 patients and performed over 120 surgeries.
Captain Brian Diebold, Commander of Task Force 49
said of the operation “The medical staff has shared with
me countless moving stories - from children getting
their first pair of glasses to grandparents being able to
see for the first time in years after a cataract surgery. It is
truly remarkable what we are capable of when we work
together.”
This is Ensign Fjeld’s second trip through the
Panama Canal on the USNS Comfort.
