Fire Checklist
Actions and Countermeasures Yes No

1 Stop the main engine.

2 Call the Master if not already on the bridge and notify engine room

3 Muster crew

4 Establish communications.

5 Check for missing and injured crew members.

6 On locating the fire, notify all onboard of the location.

7 If there is an engine room fire, prepare for engine failure.

8 Any casualties and if so, is first aid given?

9 Assess fire and determine:

9.1 The class of fire.

9.2 Appropriate extinguishing agent.

9.3 Appropriate method of attack.

9.4 How to prevent spread of fire.

9.5 Is the fire spreading and extent of damage established?

9.6 The necessary personnel and fire fighting methods.

10 Any oil/hazardous substance pollution or possibility of one?

11 Close down ventilation fans, all doors including fire, watertight doors and sky light.

12 Switch on deck lighting at night.

13 Make ships position available.

14 Broadcast DISTRESS alert and MESSAGE if the ship is in grave and imminent
danger, immediate assistance is required, otherwise broadcast an URGENCY
message to ships in the vicinity.

15 Are shore authorities (USCG, or international oil spill & fire fighting contractor)
informed if shore assistance required?

16 Has office been informed and required reports made?
