CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study


Introduce the topic(s) to be discussed from general to specific so that it engages the

readers to continue reading. You may include definition on the general term related to

your topic. Do not forget to also mention the place where the writer will conduct internship

to obtain data on the topic. Make sure the reasons on the selection of the topic and

internship place are also discussed. In the last part of this section, provide a clear thesis

statement which states the objectives of study and the reasons for choosing the objectives.

Usually you will need to make 2 pages for background. Example:

Indonesia has a lot of tourism cities and tourism sites which are growing in numbers

rapidly. Development of tourism in Indonesia gives positive influence on the development of

hotel in Indonesia. As we know, the presence of hotel in Indonesia is able to accommodate

visitors while they are on vacation. Also, hotel can be a support factor for visitor to visit a

tourism spot.

The presence of hotel in Indonesia did not just happen. According to www.scribd.com,

hospitality industry in Indonesia was introduced by the Dutch when the Dutch colonized

Indonesia by building some hotels, such as Des Nederland Hotel in Jakarta, Slier Hotel in

Solo, and Palace Hotel in Malang. In 1945 Indonesia got independence from colonization.

After several years Indonesia got its independence, in 1962, Indonesian’s government built

Indonesian first hotel called as Hotel Indonesia. After one year, in 1963, the government built

a hotel in Bali called as Bali Beach Hotel.

After the advent of hotels in Jakarta and Bali, hospitality industry in Indonesia began to

grow rapidly. This is proved with the advent of hotel in other cities, such as Surabaya,

Yogyakarta and Bandung. Moreover, the development of hospitality industry is proven by the

presence of types of hotel based on some categories.

Along with development era, hospitality has grown into a business which is emerging in

Indonesia. This condition makes the emergence of some types of hotel with many categories

or classifications such as; based on the ownership, length of guest stay, location, and others.

According to Sambodo and Bagyono, there are some types of hotel based on the ownership

(19-21). First type is chain hotel. Chain Hotels is a hotel chain network consisting of three or

more hotels managed by one company or operated under the same name. Usually, this type of

hotel has relation with the other companies under the same ownership and management.

Moreover, the parent company or holding will give standards ways and policies to manage its

hotels. Second type is Franchise Hotel. Franchise is the arrangement between the independent

owner of the hotel with a giant hotel. The hotel owner is responsible to build, maintain, and

operates the hotel. On the other hand, the owner of a franchise allows the hotel’s owner to use

the name of a network of franchise hotel, the logo, the architecture and the design of the

franchise. In other words, the hotel owner is “buying” the brand and the management of a

giant company which already has a big name. Third type is independent hotel. Independent

hotel is a hotel which does not have any relationship with the franchise brand of a giant hotel

and networking hotel. This hotel belongs to individuals who act as manager. The owner can

also appoint someone to become general manager of his/ her hotel. Usually, this hotel

belongs to a family, so that the ownership is inherited from generation to generation. In short,

chain hotel, franchise, and independent hotel are some types of hotel based on ownership.

One of chain hotels in Yogyakarta is Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel. Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel is a

hotel chaired by Prime Plaza Hotel and Resort Company. Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel is located in

Jl. Affandi, Gejayan, Complex Colombo Jogjakarta. Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel is an international

resort-styled hotel located in the city's university district. This hotel combines the very best of

old traditions and excellent new facilities. Also, this hotel has commitment to serve the

highest level of service. With all of commitments the hotel gets many achievements from

many institutions such as PROPER with blue ribbon from Ministry of Environment in 2014,

Certificate of Excellent from Tripadvisor in 2012 and 2013, and other property awards.

However, the achievement of all the awards cannot be separated from the role of important

division in the hotel; one of important divisions is public relation.

As an important division, public relation has many definitions from experts. There are

two definitions of public relation from experts. First, according to IPRA (International Public

Relation Assosiation) “Public relation is management function, of a continuing and planned

character, through which private organization and institutions seek to win and retain the

understanding, sympathy and support of those with whom there or may be concerned by

evaluating public opinion about themselves to achieve by planned and widespread

information more production cooperation and more efficient fulfillment of their common

interest” (IPRA 3). The meaning of the statement is public relation is a part of management

or tool used by organization to reach the goals by evaluating public opinion about

organization. Second definition of public relation according to Fallyn Gregory and Valin in

www.PRConversations.com is “the strategic management of relationship between an

organization and its diverse public, through the use communication, to achieve

understanding, realize organizational goals, and serve the public interest”. The meaning of

the statement is public relation is a strategic division from company to reach the goals and a

tool to build relation with public. The last, according to PRSA (Public Relations Society of

America) “Public relation is a strategic communication process that builds mutually

beneficial relationship between organizations and their public” (PRSA 2). The meaning of the

statement is public relation is a person who helps organization and public to adapt with each

other and to help organization to interact and communicate with their public. Therefore, the

role of public relation is needed in the development of an organization.

As a staff of important division, public relation officer must have good communication

skill to build and maintain positive relationship and goodwill to customer, colleague and

public. However, public relations officer must not only be good in communication; public

relation must also have other abilities to properly run their duties well. First, public relations

should be able to properly confront every customer with different variety of characters. They

have to understand and be tolerant about what customer want although it is not easy. Second,

public relations should have good creativity to amaze customer. Third, public relation officer

must have good skill in writing because they should make press release to inform public

about what is new from the hotel. The last, public relation officer should be a good decision

maker because they will meet many problems that force them to solve the problems well.

Understanding the customer, being a good creative staff, being a good writer and being a

good decision maker are some abilities that public relations officer should have.

Briefly, with the important duties and roles that public relations have, they support a

success of an organization. Therefore, the writer will become an apprentice as public relation

in Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel from January to April 2017. Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel already gets

some achievements either from government and press. All of achievements mean that the

hotel is one of prestigious hotels in Yogyakarta. Thus, the writer could learn a lot of things

that can help her to be professional public relation officer. Also, the writer could learn how to

be a hospitality employee and know how to work as a professional public relation officer.

Moreover, she believes that she could improve her communication skill while she could be an

apprentice as a public relation officer in Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel. The writer believes that she

could get a lot of benefits by taking internship program in Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel. By

conducting internship in Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel, the writer will be able to learn the profile of

the hotel and the roles of its Public Relation officers to be discussed in the paper.

1.2 Objectives of Study

Mention clearly the topics to be discussed in the following chapters of Graduating

Paper. The topics can consist of at least two main objectives. Example:

In this study on public relation in Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel, the writer will discuss two

things. The first thing that will be identified by the writer is the profile of Jogjakarta Plaza

Hotel. The second thing that will be identified by the writer is public relations officers’ roles

in Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel and also the Standard Operating Procedure of each role performed

by the PR in Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel.

1.3 Scope of Study

In detail, write the focus of discussion for each of the main objectives mentioned in

Objectives of Study. Example:

In this paper the writer would like to discuss the profile of Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel, which

includes its history, vision mission, location and appearance, facilities, and organization

structure. Besides, it will also discuss the roles of PR in Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel. In the

discussion on the role of the PR, the writer will also discuss the standard operating procedure

in each of the role they perform.

1.4 Method of Study


1.4.1 Method of collecting the data
Explains how the data are obtained using field study and library study. Mention the

techniques used in each of the method. Example:

The writer employs library study and field study in collecting the data. The writer will

conduct field study through the internship program in Public Relation division from January

to April 2017. During this internship program, the writer will observe and practice the roles

of PR officers in Jogjakarta Plaza hotels and the SOP in each of the roles. The writer will also

interview the head of PR division and some PR officers in Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel to clarify

the information obtained during the observation. The writer will conduct the interviews based

on the list of interview questions (s)/he has prepared using recording technique.

The writer will also conduct library study by reading and studying documents obtained

from the hotel related to the company profile of Jogjakarta Plaza hotel and also the roles and

SOP of PR officers in Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel. In addition, some books and also references

from the internet will also be used as sources of information related to hotel classification,

definition of PR, and general roles of PR.

1.4.2 Method of analyzing the data


Explains how the data are analyzed. Example:

The data obtained from the interviews are transcribed and translated into English.

Afterwards, all the data obtained from field study and library study are classified based on

their relevance to the objectives of the study. Then, the writer will interpret the data to

answer the objectives of study.

1.4.3 Method of presenting the data


Explains how you present the data or findings in the paper. Example:

After all the data are interpreted and the answers to the objectives are made, the writer

will present the findings descriptively. This means that the writer will describe the findings using

description. For the profile of Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel, the description will be supported by

pictures, such as pictures on the map and the appearance of the hotel, the hotel facilities, and

scheme on the organization structure of the hotel. For the roles of PR officers, the descriptions

are accompanied by pictures on some activities of PR officers in each role. The pictures and

schemes are provided to make the description clearer and more understandable for the readers.

1.5 Presentation
Explain how the Graduating Paper is organized. Example:
This graduating paper consists of four chapters. Chapter one is the introduction which

consists of the information on the study and the reasons the writer take to conduct the study,

the objectives the writer would like to study, the focus of study, the methods of collecting,

analyzing, and presenting the data, and the way the paper is organized. The second chapter

explains about the profile of Jogjakarta Plaza Hotel which includes the discussion on the

history, vision mission, location and appearance, facilities, and organization structure. In

chapter three, the discussion is on the role of PR officers, and the writer will also discuss the

standard operating procedure in each of the role performed by PR officers in Jogjakarta Plaza

Hotel. Chapter four, which is the last chapter in the paper, will conclude all the information

which can answer the objectives of study.
