A MOVEMENT FOR LEADERSHIP IN BC
WHEREAS the efforts of Provincial Leader Carole James helped the BC NDP
in 2005 to recover from the devastating loss of seats in 2001, an immense
service that will always be appreciated by the Party and its members,
AND WHEREAS the resignation of Premier Gordon Campbell on Wednesday,
November 3, has completely changed the political environment in the
province of BC,
AND WHEREAS it is crucially important in the next election, against an
unknown Liberal opponent, that the BC NDP be able to communicate a clear,
progressive, alternative Vision to the voters of the province,
AND WHEREAS the present Provincial Leader failed to clearly define BC NDP
Vision and policy during the 2009 election and publicly admitted as much
after the Party failed to make appreciable gains in that election,
AND WHEREAS, since that time, on several key political issues, the Leader
has consistently failed to define positions reflective of and compatible with
the overarching, integrated environmental, economic and social Vision and
policy that was unanimously adopted at Party Convention and that is
desperately needed to address the serious issues facing British Columbia and
the Planet,
AND WHEREAS many members and supporters of the BC NDP feel that the
Leader’s recent judgement to arbitrarily expel a member of the NDP Caucus,
without consultation with Caucus or its designated leaders, denied
democratic expression of opinion and created a public embarrassment for the
Party,
AND WHEREAS several constituencies have tried in the past to convey their
leadership concerns through resolutions that were sent to the November
2009 policy convention but which were prevented from reaching the
Convention floor,
AND WHEREAS, in keeping with the democratic principles fundamental to
our Party's values, many members of the BC NDP want to respond to the
new political environment in BC by participating in a prompt leadership
review but find they have limited means and ability to achieve this,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that, as the governing body of the Party
between Conventions, the BC NDP Provincial Council expresses its
appreciation for the eight years of service by our Provincial
Leader; recognizes the need for the BC NDP to put forward to the citizens of
BC a more bold Vision centred on an ecologically sustainable and socially
equitable economy; and hereby invites the Provincial Leader to step down for
the greater good of the Party.
