LISTENING SKILLS ENHANCEMENT WORKSHOP

GOALS

This session will:

1. Give participants the opportunity to practice listening and synthesizing information.


2. Inculcate the habit of paying attention and responding appropriately.
3. Explain non-verbal communication.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

1. Understand the difference between listening and hearing.


2. Will appreciate the value of active listening and importance of the same in their daily lives.

WORKSHOP AT A GLANCE

The workshop would be conducted in two days comprising of two sessions on each day. Both the sessions will be of
ninety minutes each.

PREPARATION

This two day workshop will have to be carried out on two consecutive days and would require a conference room
equipped with a screen and a capacity of holding sixty participants and a trainer.

Divide the participants into a group of 6 each and make them sit around a table such that the members of every group
can face each other. This arrangement will be used for the second activity as well. The sitting arrangement for the
subsequent session would remain the same as a group assignment would be given to the groups and they would have to
present their observations and results in session two.
Activity 1: Listening Practice: Count the word/phrase:

 Play any documentary movie/Drama/Episode of popular show.


 Assign any word/phrase to the teams.
 Teams will count the number of times that word/phrase played.
 The team which gets the correct answer wins.

Activity 2: Clear Communication: Draw the Picture:

Materials for the activity: Picture cards, blank sheets and pens

 Give the one member a simple picture. And the other members a blank paper/canvas.
 First member will describe the picture to the other members and she/he has to draw it in a given time frame. No
one can see each other.
 The group with maximum number of drawings which resemble the most with the original pictures wins.

Activity 3: Back to back listening: Follow the Lead:

 A moderator will give instruction to the employees to perform. Like Clapping their hands, clicking their fingers,
raising their left/right hand while performing the respective action.
 After few actions, Moderator will perform actions other than the one he is instructing. For example, He will
instruct them to clap their hand but he will click his finger. Employees who perform actions other than what
were instructed will be eliminated from the game.
 Last man standing wins the game.

Activity 4: Listening Comprehension: Pass the story:

 Divide the employees in the group of 3-5.


 Tell a short story only to the first member.
 First member will pass the story to the second, second member to the third and so on till the last member. (only
through oral communication)
 See how the story changes over time.
 The team which gets to the closest of the original story wins.

Assignment

Each group will be given a twenty minutes episode of the popular television show, ‘The Office’. Every team will have to
identify the five key benefits of active listening and highlight the good points and areas of improvement in the listening
skills of any one character of their choice.

The teams will be evaluated on the basis of their creativity and clarity of concept coupled with efficient communication
skills.
