A reconstructed detailed lesson plan in Biology

Prepared by:

Jared Tabangcura Justine Paul Luz

I. OBJECTIVES:
Given a 60 minute discussion, the student should be able to:
a. Identify the structures of the respiratory system
b. Tell the major functions of the respiratory system
c. Design and create a model for pulmonary ventilation

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Function, Parts, and Breathing Mechanism of the Respiratory System

Concepts: Conducting zone- structures that serves as passageways of air
Respiratory zone- structures responsible for gas exchange
Pulmonary ventilation- cycle between inspiration and expiration
Inspiration- entering of air into the lungs
Expiration- release of air out of the lungs

III. LEARNING TASK:

Teacher’s activity Student’s activity

Good morning students Good morning sir

Before we begin to discuss our new lesson, let us (Students stand)

all stand up and do what I say.

Now, I would like you to inhale slowly. (Students inhale and exhale repeatedly)
Inhale, exhale … exhale
Now sit down, how does it feel? (Students respond)

Alright, our new lesson for today is all about the Breathing sir
respiratory system. Now, what common word do
you associate with the word respiratory system?

Good! By the way, why do we need to breath? We need to breath in order to supply our body
with sufficient oxygen sir.
You are right! Every cell in the body needs to run
to run the oxidative stages of cellular respiration,
which is the process by which energy is produced
in the form of ATP.

What else? We need to breath in order to release carbon

dioxide
You are right! Carbon dioxide is a waste product of
respiration so we should release it from our
system.

Bring out your reference materials. (Students bring out their books, gadgets, etc.)

You already know that the respiratory system is

responsible for obtaining oxygen and getting rid of The two zones are the conducting zone and
carbon dioxide. From a functional perspective, the respiratory zone
RS is divided into two major areas or zones. What
are these zones?

What is the difference between the two zones? The conducting zone consists of all the structures
that provide passageways for air to travel into and
out of the lungs while the respiratory zone
includes the structures of the lung that are directly
involved in gas exchange

Absolutely right! Therefore, what structures are Nasal cavity, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, and most
present in the conducting zones? bronchioles.

This is the nasal cavity….bronchi.

What about the respiratory zone? Terminal bronchioles and alveoli

This is how terminal bronchioles and alveoli look I noticed that my rib cage expands and moves
like. They are found inside the lungs. Now, what outward.
did you notice when you inhale awhile back before
our class starts?

Yes, this is because your diaphragm and external

intercostal muscles contract, causing the rib cage
to expand and move outward, and expanding the
thoracic cavity and lung volume. This creates a
lower pressure within the lung than that of the
atmosphere, causing air to be drawn into the
lungs. This process is called inspiration.

What about when you exhale? My ribs relax and turn to normal.

Yes, your diaphragm and intercostal relax, causing

the thorax and lings to recoil. The air pressure
within the lungs increases to above the pressure of
the atmosphere, causing air to be forced out of the
lungs. This process is called expiration.

The entire process of inhalation and expiration is

called pulmonary ventilation.

Alright! Form yourselves into 2 groups. Using the

materials I asked you to bring yesterday, I would (Students do the model)
like you to create a model that exhibits pulmonary
ventilation. Do it for 20 minutes.

Okay, time is up, pass all your outputs and present (Students present)
it on front.

Very nice. So, can someone summarize the lesson The respiratory system is necessary for gas
for today exchange which body needs. The respiratory
system is divided into conducting zone which
provides air passageways and respiratory zone
responsible for gas exchange. Pulmonary
ventilation consists of processes which includes
inspiration, which is the entering of air into the
lungs, and expiration, which is the release of air
from the lungs.

IV. EVALUATION :

I. Identification
1. Give one function of the respiratory system.
2. Zone that provides passageways to travel into and out of the lungs.
3. Zone that is responsible for gas exchange.
4. Process of which oxygen enters the lungs.
5. Process of which carbon dioxide get out of the lungs.

II. Assignment
Read about the pulmonary circulation.
