CHAPTER I

The Problem and its Background

Introduction

There have been numerous studies examining the relationship between class size

and student performance in primary, secondary, and in higher education. Generally,

studies that have been conducted support the view how that small classes are preferable

than to large classes because of the result in students` academic performance. The issue

of poor performance of students has been much concern to all and sundry. Learning is

complex, involving cognitive processes that are not completely understood. Typically,

school systems have established a primary mode of learning that involves groups of

students of about the same age interacting with a single individual leading activities in a

confined physical space, directed toward learning a particular topicin other words,

students are placed in classes. The number of other students in the class can vary. At the

extreme, there can be one or more adults facilitating learning; teachers, with one or two

students. The number of students in a class has the potential to affect.

The research on the class size and student performance of Information

Technology First year students in STI College Caloocan takes on new importance in an

era when institutions of higher education are being asked to do more to enhance the

capability of the students. However, the amount of student learning is dependent on many

different factors. Some are related to the classroom and school environment in which the

class takes place, but others are related to the student’s own background and motivation

and broader community influences.

2

The objectives of this study is to know and to give information about the

relationship between the class size and student performance of the first year student

Information Technology in STI College Caloocan.

Statement of the Problem

This study seeks to gather information about the class size and student

performance of the Information Technology First Year student in STI College Caloocan

City. Specifically, it sought answers to the following questions.

1. What is the average number of male and female students in Information

Technology First Year student in Computer Fundamentals?

2. What is the correlation of the class size and student performance of

Information Technology First Year student in Computer Fundamentals?

3. What is the relationship of gender to the class performance of Information

Technology First Year student in Computer Fundamentals?

Assumptions

1. Most of the Information Technology First Year student in Computer

Fundamentals the number of male students is less than females.

2. The class size of Information Technology First Year student in Computer

Fundamentals will not affect the performance of the student.

3. The relationship of gender to class performance of Information

Technology First Year student in Computer Fundamentals is low, because

gender has a little relationship in class performance.

3

Significance of the Study

The study will be beneficial to the following:

To the Information Technology Students. The findings of this research will

provide knowledge about the relationship of class size and student performance,

enlightened and become beneficial to the students of System Technology Institute (STI).

To the Information Technology Teachers. The results of this study will provide

new information on how the professors handle and teach a small and large class and to

develop the students’ performance in theclass.

To System Technology Institute Administrators. This research will provide

new information about the class size and student performance to maintain the status of

small classes in STI.

To the Readers. This research will give new information about class size and

student performance of the Information Technology First Year student of STI College

Caloocan and can serve as a reference material.

To the Future Researchers. The findings of this study will serve as a reference

material and a guide for future researches.

Hypothesis

There is negligible relationship between class size and student performance on the

other hand there is low relationship between class size in student performance in

Information Technology First Year Student in STI College Caloocan.

4

Scope and Limitations

This research studies the class size and student performance of Information

Technology First Year Student in STI College Caloocan. The researchers distributed a

total of two questions about the class size and class mean performance of the First year

students of Information Technology, to six (6) IT teachers of Computer Fundamentals in

STI College Caloocan. It was revised by Mrs. Edita E. de Guzman, the research teacher

and Mr. Richard Maestre, the statistics teacher. The researchers distributed eleven

questionnaires to the teachers of first year students of Information Technology in

Computer Fundamentals in STI College Caloocan dated September 14 and 15, 2015.

Definition of Terms

The following terminologies are defined:
