Lesson Title: The Civil War in Mississippi

Subject Area(s): Mississippi Studies

Grade Level: 9th grade

Time Needed: 5, 1 ½ hr classes (Block Schedule)

State or Common Core Standards:

MS.6

Recognize the role of Mississippi during the Civil War and evaluate the effects of
Reconstruction within the state.

(Strands: Civics, Civil Rights, Geography, History, Economics)

6.1. Examine the roles and contributions of women and minorities in the Civil War.

6.2. Analyze the military actions that took place in Mississippi during the Civil War.

6.3. Detail the effects of the Civil War on Mississippi’s economy.

Learning Objectives (including cognitive and behavioral objectives)

 Identify major battles that took place in MS (Battle of Shiloh, Battle at Oxford, Battle at
Champions Hill, Battle of Vicksburg, Battle of Jackson)
 Define key terms: Emancipation Proclamation, Confederate, Union, Batteries, Siege,
 Create a timeline map of the battles lead by General Grant that lead to the siege of
Vicksburg.
 Explain what events led to the Civil War in the United States.
 Discover what role women and minorities played in the Civil War.
 Explain why president Abraham Lincoln said that capturing Vicksburg would be the key
to winning the war for the Union.
 Explain the effects of the Emancipation Proclamation

Assessment

 Students will participate in Kahoot and Quizlet live in groups as a formative assessment
 Students will upload their PowerPoint Projects on Google Docs
 Students will take a test at the end of the week on the material learned in the classroom
on their Chromebooks via Google Forms.
