Title:
Cell Structure and its function
Purpose:
In this laboratory activity you will study biology from the viewpoint of the
individual cell. Although the cell is the building block of all organisms, cells differ
enormously in shape, size and capability. Prokaryotic cells are less complex, are
usually found only in unicellular organisms and have more limited capabilities than
eukaryotic cells. Multicellular organisms are made up of highly integrated
aggregations of specialized eukaryotic cells, but some complex organisms consist of
a single eukaryotic cell.
Procedure:
I. BASIC CELL TYPES
1. Using your reference materials, draw the following types of cells:
i. Prokaryotic Cell
ii. Eukaryotic Cell
a) Animal Cell
b) Plant Cell
2. Label the parts of the cell and complete the table below:
FUNCTION
PARTS (Please include which type of cell do these
parts may be found)
Questions to Answer:
1. Compare and contrast the following: (a) prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and
(b) animal and plant cell.
2. Describe the shape of the animal and plant cell. Explain how their shape
affect their function.
3. What cell structures can you identify from the actual cells you observed in the
microscope? Compare the organelles based on the figures presented in the
reference books and its actual image.
4. Some of the cells may be folded or wrinkled. What does this indicate to you
about the thickness of the cells?
5. Based from the different slides that you have observed in the laboratory; how
do cells vary from each other?
6. How does the diverse types and structure of cells affect its role or function in
our bodily processes?
