Hardware Settings

The datalogger must be connected to the computer by means of a comport connection. Select the
COM port of your computer providing the connection with the datalogger (e.g. the CPT-Logger). The
software will automatically detect the relevant Comport connection.

The encoder, that synchronises the CPT data with depth, generates a certain number of pulses per
cm. Check the manual of the relevant encoder type to find the number of pulses corresponding with 1
cm displacement. In general that’s 10 pulses per 1 cm. However in some cases encoders generates 5
or 20 pulses/cm. In case of doubt, please check the depth by making a 1 meter CPT push and check
the depth figure in the CPT graph.

The depth encoder recognizes the direction of rotation. In most cases the depth encoder is mounted at
the top of the penetrometer pusher ("Top" position). In case the depth value shows negative figures
during a CPT test, please select the other mounting position ("Bottom").

Output-Formats and Storage

CPT-Explorer can generate different output formats. By default all CPT tests data are stored in the so-
called Gouda format which covers all data to fulfil the requirements of ISO-22476. The existing output
formats are not fully compliant with ISO-22476, however CPT Explorer can still store the CPT data in
existing (non-compliant) output formats. Here you can select in which other format you will save the
CPT data.

CPT-Explorer generates the following output-formats:

• Gouda-format (ISO-22476 compliant)
• GEF (non-compliant with ISO-22476)
• 0&1 (non-compliant with ISO-22476)
• Gorilla (non-compliant with ISO-22476)

When selecting other output formats, please always select per default the Gouda-format too. In case
of any problems with the computer we can always support you better by using the Gouda-format.

In case you opt to have the data stored in the Gorilla format as well, you’ll have to specify the data
saving interval. By default, this is done every 1 cm, but you can also opt for a resolution of 1 data line
per 2 cm. CPT-Explorer also offers you the possibility to save a filtered version of the Gorilla file.

It is possible to change the directory where calibration files of electric cones / measuring heads are
stored. It is recommended to use the default directory.

It is possible to change the directory where the CPT test data (which comprises of several files) are
stored. It is recommended to use the default directory.

Instruments
In the main screen the menu "Instruments" can be selected to enter the instruments library.

CPT-Explorer has a comprehensive functionality, where calibration files of electric cones and
measuring heads can be saved; this is the so-called cone calibration library. The calibration files of all
electric cones en measuring heads ever used in combination with this CPT-Explorer version are saved
in this library, unless the user deletes them himself.

Using the cone calibration library, it is really easy to select the right calibration file, to add new
calibration files or to amend existing files in case the relevant measuring instrument has been re-
calibrated. The cone calibration library also offers the possibility to make changes in already saved
calibration files.

To copy the calibration file form the USB stick to the computer, simply press the button "Check USB
device for calibration files". The software automatically makes a copy and adds the calibration file of
the instrument to the list. Select the right instrument by ticking the selection in the left column. In the
right part of the screen, all characteristics of the instrument will be displayed, please check the values
with the certificate to confirm the latest calibration data.

Start CPT
After pressing the "Start CPT" button, the input screen for the CPT test is shown. In this screen all
information about the next CPT test to be done can be entered. In the left part all information
regarding the project can be described, especially the project number and the CPT number. CPT-
Explorer automatically generates the file name based on this project number and CPT number. Please
describe all other information about the test in the available fields. Please select whether a friction
reducer is used or not.

In case of using a piezocone CPT-Explorer offers you the possibility to use it with or without the pore
pressure data. The position of the filter ring can be selected (normally this is position u2). In case this
screen displays the wrong instrument, you click the "Instruments" tab and immediately you can select
a different instrument (see previous paragraph).

Please select the right coordinate system and reference level and the right geotechnical standard to
which the CPT test will be done. Finally describe the pre-drill depth.

All information described in this window will be stored digitally in the Gouda-format of the CPT test.

Continue the CPT test by pressing the "Next" button. The software will ask for the confirmation that
your instruments is still according the specification. The CPT operator must confirm this by pressing
"Yes".

Now the software will measure the so called "zero reading". It is important to do this while your
instrument is in unloaded position (above ground level). Press the button "zero reading" for saving the
zero readings in the file. In case the zero reading deviates more than 5% full scale from the original
calibration value, the value will turn red. In that case you need to use and select another instrument.
The instrument does not comply the ISO-22476 standard and cannot be used. Please send the cone
back to us for repair and recalibration.

In case all values are within the range of 5%, you can continue the CPT test. The software asks you to
move the cone to ground level. Press "OK" after the cone tip is put to ground level to start the depth
registration from the right reference level.

By pressing "OK" the software continues to the CPT graph screen to start the actual CPT test.

CPT graph

The CPT graph consists of 2 or more different columns to draw the graph for each channel. An electric
piezocone will show the following graphs:
- Cone tip resistance qc
- Local friction fs
- Pore pressure u
- Friction ratio Rf
- Inclination I

Below the graphs the actual values of each channel are displayed. Below these values you will find
the project information and the instrument selected as well as date and time of the CPT.
In the right corner the CPT speed is shown and the top view of the inclination.

While doing the CPT test, the graphs will be drawn for each channel. When the required depth has
been reached, the CPT test can be stopped by pressing "Stop CPT". The software asks for
confirmation of stopping the test:

By pressing "Yes" the CPT test will stop and no further data will be recorded.

A new display pops up on which you can select the reason why the CPT test was stopped. The default
reason is "End depth reached" but you are able to select different standard reasons. Additional
information can be written in the text field below. In case casing tubes are used during the CPT test,
the right length can be written. Again all this information is stored digitally in the CPT file.

The CPT sounding tubes can be retrieved out of the soil until the electric cone or other instrument is
hanging freely above ground level. Now you can do the second zero reading to check the instrument
at the end of the test.

The software will check whether the instrument has been stable during the test. Once the zero drift
has been too big, the % value will turn red. Press "zero reading" to record the zero reading in the file.

When a backup file is required (see Output formats and Storage) the software will ask for the USB
stick. Please put the USB stick in the slot of the computer and press "OK"

The CPT test is now stored in the computer as well as on the USB stick. The CPT test is ready.
