Changes in Views of Ancient and Present Javanese Women

The patriarchy spread throughout society all over the world, including in Java. A system
of patriarchy that adopted by Javanese make the role of men are more dominant than women. As
delivered by Engels in Budiman (1981 : 23), the emergence of the patriarchy system make a
women only as a slave of greed man and become children maker machines. The form of the
patriarchy according to Sylvia Walby having two forms namely the domestic patriarchy (private
patriarchy) and the public patriarchy. The private patriarchy is a form of the patriarchy who
knocked out women from public space and directing women on the job domestic. The domestic
patriarchy only focused on work in the household as a stereotype attached to women. In this
case, work in the household regarded as partaking to be executed by women which are could not
insensible. When the women conditioned like that, so could possibly have happened oppression
of women. While the patriarchy public is the form of patriarchy that provides a place for women
in selected public space, but excluded from man.

Wirawan (in Handayani, 2004) revealed that women in Java culture often called as kanca
wingking (friends in the kitchen) by her husband. The fate of women also depends on her
husband : swarga nunut, neraka katut (to heaven she follows, to hell she carried away), the one
proverbial Java. Java culture viewed that the job of a women is macak (ornate), masak (cook),
and manak (childbirth) with the operational region of the kitchen, wells, and mattress. In view of
Javanese life, also known three loyalty a women, as a child must listen to the parents, when adult
must adhere to the husband, when old must adhere to the children (Supatra, 2007). Also an
expression of wanita iku yen awan dadi theklek, lha yen bengi dadi lemek (women if the day as a
footwear, at night as a bed). Even, viewed from the side of the term in Java language, women
derived from kerata basa (an expression of language), wani (brave) dan tata (rules), the meaning
is wani ditata (bold arranged). A great variety of views on women Java as assures us that women
Java have less the role in deciding what they want.

To choose a spouse, women Java are not justified in making decision because it was done
by parents in Family Java. All what they told and ordered is a must which should be done by a
child. Because women Java have attitude narimo of the decision family. If choose a spose so
difficult for women Java, especially when she want to married with a different ethnic. The reason
is the difference in value culture that was the consideration and there would certainly be a
sonsequences can be conflict, internal conflict and external conflict. At the time, marriage aims
to reducing the burden on parents, improve the economic situation, and producing offspring.
They also didn’t have a freedom to do rejection. Women who refuse for married is contemptible
and ungrateful. So that they receive practices an arranged marriage.
The implications of things that already described above is freedom of women really
constrained. National history mention the fact that women are not allowed to feel the education,
an exception to the nobility. Women are also hard to having a profession outside or participate in
bureaucracy. The result is they became someone who unproductive and only curled up for
cooking, washing, sweeping, and cleaning the house. But that was ancient. because of the
emancipation of women, nowadays they have been able to argue freely, they can also work on
things that only men used to do

The views of ancient criticized because opposed to the principles and teachings of Islam.
“O mankind ! We have created you from a male and female, and made you into nations and
tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that
(believer) who has At-Taqwa. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.” (Al-Hujurat (49) : 13 ).
Even though the women ever described crossing to the principle of justice (‘adl) and equality
(taswiyah) in the theological doctrine, but the situation of women nowadays has changed towards
a more positive direction. It’s true that men and women have distinction from biological
perspective, but these differences never hampering the women to compete in such diverse fields,
such as political, social, economic, and others.

According to the guidance of Islam that loving the science and make it as a culture. In
this case, women get an equal right with the man and be able to work or looking for of what God
has provided. Based on observations, performance women nowadays was better than men. The
reason behind it is can be seen from the tenacity and thoroughness workers women combined
with tender feelings in each of all types of activities, so the result can be trusted and satisfactory.
