This manual is intended as a “how to” reference on how to use the GIS
Wizard to integrate GIS data with Survalent’s ADMS.
This manual assumes that you have a working knowledge of ESRI ArcMap,
SQL Server, .NET Framework Client Profile and SmartVU.
This manual describes how to install and run the GIS Wizard in order to
successfully convert spatial and non-spatial data into STC tables.
Overview GIS Wizard is a companion software to integrate GIS data with Survalent’s ADMS.
It is capable of converting of ESRI GeoDatabases into STC protocol compliance
data tables used by the SmartVU GIS import component.
The major function of GIS Wizard is to bring and convert spatial and non-spatial
data into STC data tables and provide assessment reports for further actions to GIS
data.
The GIS Wizard also provides a user-friendly GUI with a flexibility of conversion and
data checking functionalities.
The prerequisite software you need to run the GIS Wizard is:
Note: Please ensure that you installed either ArcGIS for Desktop or ArcGIS Engine
Authentication.
Installation
Install the GIS Wizard The following procedure describes how to install the GIS Wizard.

About this chapter This chapter describes the GIS Wizard interface. It also provides information on
how to create a new task.
About this section The following section describes the GIS Wizard task window.
GIS Wizard window When you open the GIS Wizard, a blank window with the following two tabs is
displayed:
• Home Tab – this contains function groups for Tasks, GIS, Database,
Converters and View
• GIS Data Management Tab – this contains a check function for the
original GIS data
• Options Tab – this contains the version number and other options
GIS Wizard window – GIS Wizard Window Description Table – Home Tab
Home tab The following table describes the icons located across the top of the GIS
Wizard window.

About this section This section describes the Task window. To create a new task, click on the New
Task icon.
New Task Window To open an existing task, click on the Open Task icon and select the desired task.

Note: The same window displays when you open an existing task.
Tab Description
The GIS View tab contains a map control for
displaying and querying GIS data. A map project
GIS View
(*.mxd) must be loaded into the task before you can
instantiate any converters.
The Converters tab is your workspace to configure the

GIS conversion rules and do the conversion work.
The Rule Editor allows you to use customized python

codes to manipulate the converted GIS data.
The Errors and Warnings tab contains a table that
Errors and records all the detected GIS data issues that cause an
Warnings unsuccessful conversion. From this tab, you can
navigate to the listed data issues on the map.

New Task Window Within each task window, you can easily organize the layout for the different
continued panes by clicking on the tab name and dragging the floating window over the
docking icon to where you want the pane to sit.
For example, in Figure 5 you can see the floating window pane. If you want to
move the window pane to the top of the task window, then set your curser over the
top square of the docking icon.
2 Operation
2.1 Introduction
About this chapter This chapter describes the operation of the GIS Wizard.
About this section This section describes how to set up the GIS Wizard in order to start your
conversions.
Overview Before you begin to convert your GIS data, you must:
• Load up the ArcMap project file (*.mxd). The ArcMap *.mxd file contains
the references to GeoDatabases that contains actual data
Load the ArcMap The following procedure describes how to load the ArcMap project file (*.mxd).

Step Action
Click on New Task in the GIS Wizard window.

Result: A new task window displays
Click on the Load MXD icon and browse to the file.

Select the file and click Open.

Result: The Map file displays.
Validate the The data itself could be wrong, therefore a raw data check is necessary to help
conductors find any data issues before you start the data conversion procedure.
Validate the The following procedure describes how to detect potential data issues by running

1 Click on the GIS Data Management tab.
Click on the Validate Conductors button.
Result: The Validate Conductor Spatial Information window
displays.
Click on Validate.
Result: The Validate Conductor Processing dialog displays.
When the validation is complete the number of records
processed displays.
Connect to the STC GIS Wizard outputs its converted GIS data into the STC database which is a SQL
Database Server database. The STC database needs to be connected before you start
converting your data.
Step Action
From the Home tab ribbon click on the Connect STC DB
icon.
Result: The Database Connection screen displays.
Note: If it’s the first time you’re running the GIS Wizard, click
on Create DB icon first to create a blank Output DB.
About this section This section describes how to use the connectivity converter.
4. Transforms GIS data values to comply with STC field value restrictions
Add the connectivity The first step in converting your GIS data is to add relevant layers into the data
layers sources list box.
Step Action
Click on the New Converter icon and select Connectivity from
1 the drop-down menu.
Result: A new Connectivity window displays.
Map the GIS fields to The next step is to map the GIS field to STC field for each individual GIS layer.

The following procedure describes how to map a GIS field to a STC field.
Step Action
From the Data Sources pane, click on the first layer you’ve
just added.
1 Result: The “Target Fields” and “GIS Fields” columns display
in the right pane for the selected GIS layers with a yellow tag
of the current GIS layer name.
Select the first blue highlighted field and click on the GIS cell
twice.

Result: The field changes color and a drop-down menu
becomes available.
Select the appropriate field from the drop-down menu. See

Table 1 for the field descriptions.
Repeat steps 2-3 until all the compulsory fields for this data
source are changed from the default value.

Note: The fields that are not highlighted are non-compulsory.
You can leave them blank or map them to a GIS field.
Repeat steps 1-4 until all the Data Sources you have added

are mapped.
Table 1
The following table describes the fields for the connectivity layers.
The sub-types are used to assign symbols to the devices. You will see
your various sub-types for both switches and specialdevice included in the
PMacros tab of the Import Configuration editor.
Specialdevice line sections may have one or two node IDs, depending on
whether they are just endpoints or connect two other line sections,
respectively.
Tie If the line section is a switch, this field specifies whether the switch is a tie
switch.
Value is Y/N. Y means tie switch. N or blank means not a tie switch.

Phase This is the phase. Any combination of ABC.

NodeId1 This is the node ID associated with one end of a conductor or one side of
a switch (or other) device.

MapX1 Map X coordinate of node 1.

MapY1 Map Y coordinate of node 1.

NodeId2 This is the node ID associated with the other end of a conductor or the
other side of a switch (or other) device.

MapX2 Map X coordinate of node 2.
For devices, such as switches, only MapX1 and MapY1 are used. For
these, you can leave MapX2 and MapY2 blank.

MapY2 Map Y coordinate of node 2.
For devices, such as switches, only MapX1 and MapY1 are used. For
these, you can leave MapX2 and MapY2 blank.

VoltageLevel Voltage level. This is used to assign a layer to the line section.

Rotation Rotation, in degrees, to be used for PMacro or symbol.
Note: Can be used with specialdevices.

Deflections For conductors only. Specifies whether the conductor is to be represented
graphically by a polyline. Value is Y/N. If Y, it will be expected to find one or
more associated records in the Deflections table, with this line section name.

Set the values in the After mapping your GIS field to the STC field, you need set up the values in the
Dictionary dictionary in the Dictionaries window pane before you run the conversion.
The dictionary enables you to match your GIS values to the accepted STC
protocol to ensure the fields are mapped correctly.
For example, the phase field in your GIS data might use combinations of RWB to
represent your phase configuration device whereas the STC protocol only accepts
combinations of ABC. You can use the dictionary to map RWB to ABC ensuring
the conversion is successful.
To set the dictionary use the drop-down menus beside the fields to map your GIS
values to the STC protocol.
Customize the Rules Each target field can be converted from one or many GIS fields using a Python
to convert GIS fields script that you can create in the Rule Editor pane. To do this, first you need to

function with its arguments.

From the Target Fields list, select the field you want to write

a script for.
Start the conversion Once you’ve completed the entire setup, you can start your conversion.
The following procedure describes the last step in the conversion process.
Step Action
Click on the Export button located in the Operations pane.
Result: The Connectivity Processing window pops up.
Confirmation
When the conversion is complete, the Connectivity Processing window displays
the number of records processed and the number of records imported.
The number of records processed and the number of records imported should
match. If the numbers do not match this indicates that the conversion was not
completely successful. The successful records will still be imported into SmartVU.
Go to the Fixing Errors section for details on how to identify and fix the errors.
Then the next time you want to run a conversion, you can click on the Open Task
icon and use the parameters you set up the first time ran the conversion.
Check the topological If you are confident that there are no invalid topological loops, you can skip this
loops procedure.
If you want to ensure that no invalid topological loops exist, then you must check for
them after the conversion is completed.
Step Action
Click on the Check Loops button located in the Operations
pane.
Result: The Loop Checking Processing window pops up.
Define the Protective The first time you run a conversion, you should perform this procedure to create a
Devices list of switch subtypes that correspond to protective devices.
For subsequent conversions, you can skip this step if there is no change to the list
of protective device subtypes.
Step Action
Click on the Define Protective Device button located in the
Operations pane.
Result: The Protective Device Definition window pops up.
Fix the errors Each converter displays an error output report if there are any data issues during
the conversion process. Some of the data issues could be lack of essential
information or incompatible data presentation.
Note: You do not have to fix the errors before you can import the successful data
into SmartVU. If you decided to fix the errors at a later date must copy them into a
spreadsheet to save them. All the errors are cleared when you close the GIS
Wizard or perform another conversion.
The following procedure describes how to fix the files that have not been
converted.

Click on the Zoom In icon or select Zoom In from the right-

Left-click on the mouse, drag the zoom icon over the

Result: The error is magnified.
About this section This section describes how to use the Distribution Transformer Converter.
Overview The Distribution Transformer Converter brings your GIS transformer data into the
STC transformer model by retrieving the transformers’ spatial and
non-spatial information and searching the parent’s primary conductor information.

layer drop-down menu.

Add the parent layers The next step is to add the parent layers. Parent layers refer to primary
conductors for the transformers. In the STC protocol, each individual transformer
needs to know its parent primary conductor.

Click on the Add…. button in the Parent Layers pane
Result: The Add GIS Layers window displays.
Set the values in the After you’ve added the parent layer, you need set up the value in the phase
Dictionary dictionary before you run the conversion.
From the Phase Dictionary pane, use the drop-down menu beside the Dictionary
File field.
Start the conversion Once you’ve completed the entire setup you can start your conversion.
The following procedure describes the last step in the conversion process.
Step Action
Click on the Export button located in the Operations pane.
Result: The Connectivity Processing window pops up.

About this section This section describes how to use the Service Locations Converter.
Overview Service Locations Converter convert your GIS service locations into STC service
location model by retrieving the service locations’ spatial and non-spatial information
and searching for links to distribution transformers.
4. Transforms service location data values to comply with STC field value
restrictions
To complete the service location conversion, you must perform the following
procedures:
Add the service The first step to convert your GIS data is to select the service location layer from the
location layer drop-down menu.
Step Action
Click on the New Converter icon and select Service

Result: A new Service Locations window displays.

location. An account number can be used for this purpose if it (or part of it) is a
permanent attribute of this service location.

Note: This can be an account number if you don’t have customer numbers, and
if customers that have multiple meters are represented multiple times in the CIS.

Set the values in the After mapping your GIS field to the STC field, you need set up the value in the
Dictionary phase dictionary before you run the conversion.
From the Dictionary pane, use the drop-down menu beside the Phase field to select
the correct value.
Get the phase The next step is to add the phase from the parent transformer. In some situations,
information phase information is provided in the GIS service location layer and needs to be
extract from the transformer layer. The GIS wizard provides an option to inherit
phase information for certain service locations from their corresponding
transformers.
The following procedure describes how to get phase information from the parent
transformer.
Step Action
Check the Enabled check box in Get Phase Information from
Transformer window pane.

Result: The Transformer Layer, Transformer Name Field
and the Transformer Phase Field become enabled.
Select the appropriate values using the drop-down menu of

each field.
Calculate the spatial If the service location layer in GIS data doesn’t contain a field to indicate the meters’
relationship parent transformer information you can have the GIS Wizard trace back from a
transformer to a specific meter. The GIS Wizard then follows the secondary network
to calculate the relationships between service locations and transformers.
The following procedure describes how to tell the GIS Wizard to calculate the
relationships between the service locations and their transformers.
Step Action
Check the Enabled check box in the “Calculate Spatial
Relationship between Meters and Transformers” window
1 pane.
Result: The Transformer and Secondary fields become
enabled.
Click on the drop-down menu beside the Transformer field

and select the appropriate transformer layer.
Click on the Add… button beside the Secondary Conductor
field.
Result: The following window pops up.
Start the conversion Once you’ve completed the entire setup, you can start your conversion.
The following procedure describes the last step in the conversion process.
Step Action
Click on the Export button located in the Operations pane.
Result: The following window pops up.

When the conversion is complete, the Service Location Processing window
displays the number of records processed and the number of records
imported.
The number of records processed and the number of records imported should
match. If the numbers do not match this indicates that the conversion was not
completely successful. The successful records will still be imported into
SmartVU.

Right-click and select Identify from the drop-down menu.

Result: The Identify window pops up.
Select the hightlighted feature.
6 Result: The Identify window displays the values for the
source where the error occurred.
