MECHANICAL HANDLINGMAINTAINABILITY STUDY Sheet No. 3 of 6264
1 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this study is to set out the measures to be incorporated in the design and construction of Tangguh LNG
Plant, to allow maintenance of the major Equipment, including piping items, within the plant. The study is intended as
a high-level overview and more detailed work instructions and procedures shall be developed by the Plant Owner.
The Study describes for each area of the plant, the items requiring maintenance, the recommended method of access
and, if necessary, how that item or parts of the item may be removed from the plant.
The intention of the Study is to ensure that maintenance will be carried out safely, with minimum disruption to
operation and other equipment. Attention is given to keeping mechanical handling methods as simple as possible so
that standard tools and equipment can be used, thereby minimising hazards. It should be noted that this Study is not a
detailed Maintenance Procedure but should be read in conjunction with vendor supplied ‘Installation, Operating and
Maintenance Procedures’ along with any ‘Method Statements’ produced to facilitate a particular activity.
2 SCOPE OF STUDY
Train 2 is a duplicate of Train 1, so only Train 1 is mentioned in this Study. All equipment on Train 2 is maintained in
the same manner as Train 1.
Methods described in this Study are not necessarily the only methods that can be used to handle the equipment
detailed. These are suggested methods only, and other methods may work equally well.
With the main piece of equipment removed, care should be taken that the adjacent piping and fittings may need to be
adequately supported.
Access to valves and other items for operational purpose, is not part of this study.
The following Plot Plans were referenced to identify crane locations, laydown areas and transport access and egress
routes:

To undertake a mechanical handling review of the facility which addresses the requirements for safe handling of
major equipment items during maintenance activities. To identify requirements for lifting, handling and transportation
of all major equipment items such as compressors, pumps, motors, exchangers, large valves and piping items ensuring
that where necessary, appropriate handling facilities are incorporated in the plant design. It also identifies
crane-standing areas. These are high level indications to show that an item can be removed. Vendor supplied ‘Special
Tools’ are mentioned in the Study and are included in the description when required.
It is not the intention of this Study to provide a detailed job plan for maintenance activities.
During the compilation of this study, reference was made to the Maintainability Philosophy, Document Number
99-PHI-EM-0005, and Plant Layout Philosophy, Document Number 99-PHI-EM-0004.
All necessary depressurising, emptying and making safe of the equipment by Operations will be carried out prior to
commencing the mechanical handlingany maintenance work, and the relevant Work Permits issued. Where entry in
to vessels is required, whether full body, or just head entry, the vessel must be purged, cleaned and gas tested. The air
quality must be declared safe, and all vessel entry procedures shall apply.
All lifting equipment shall be tested and have current certification in accordance with procedures and regulatory
requirements, and scheduled maintenance shall be in place for such equipment.
When using a mobile crane, a spreader plate of at least 600mm x 600mm will be used under crane outriggers.
Underground facilities will take the weight of a passing vehicle. To protect cable culverts and underground FRP
piping from crane loads it is proposed to place spreader plates of 2m x 2m where crane outriggers are located. The use
of Spreader plates is considered ‘good engineering practice’ during any crane activities where outriggers are
deployed.
During the infrequent use of a 30t, 40t or 50t capacity semi-trailer to exit/enter a 4m wide maintenance road
to/from a 6m wide primary road, it will be necessary to add approximately 100mm thickness of temporary
packing at the road intersection radius, in order to provide a level surface for the trailer wheels during the
turn.
It should be noted that a crane ‘size’ specified in this Study does not necessarily mean this is the minimum crane size
required for the particular handling operation. e.g. if a 70-ton crane is in the area working on a piece of heavy
equipment, it will be utilized to lift out lighter pieces of equipment, instead of bringing in extra craneage, and
congesting the area.
Pipework and fittings removed shall be stored on a pallet or similar, where applicable, and protected from damage,
loss and the environment. Once installed it is not likely that a compressor or vessel will come out again, although
access will be required for inspection and overhaul and spool pieces will need to be removed for access or replacement
of vessel internals.
Gratings have not been strengthened above general requirements for specific maintenance loads, relying instead on
spreader plates to distribute the load across the floor.
Removal of large valves is not intended to be a common occurrence. However, the design of the Plant has been
reviewed to ensure the valve removal may be achieved where required, consistent with the operating requirement of
_ __
the Plant, and where possible, using current on-site maintenance cranes and equipment. All valves are able to have
__ RA|maintenance work carried out on them in situ. For some of the larger valves, which are installed in the middle of the

Train, the actuators will have to be removed from the valve with the use of individually engineered trolley beams,
before the valve can be lifted out. For safety and compliance to Company and good engineering practices, a Method
Statement should be prepared for the removal of non-common maintenance equipment before the activity
commences.
Frequency of testing and inspection of Safety Valves and Cranes will be as per MIGAS regulations.
Fin-Fan cooler motors are lowered by means of the lifting eyes and ‘Special Tools’ provided by the vendor, and
lowered onto a trolley, pulled to the centre of a trolley beam and transported via a chain block and trolley to the drop
zones for lowering on to transport at grade.
Any Method Statement required for carrying out a particular maintenance activity is the responsibility of the Plant
Owner.
All vessels are listed in this report and it is shown how they can be accessed. The described access can be used for
removing and replacing external and internal fittings, including packing, trays and catalyst.
Trays, structural fittings, packing and catalyst will be delivered by Crane Boom Truck to a laydown area close to the
vessel where the Crane Boom Truck will be offloaded by its crane, forklift or hand. When the item is needed in the
vessel, it will be transported to a convenient spot by hand, trolley or forklift, where it will be slung, and a crane or
fixed Davit used to lift it to the vessel.
All exchangers are listed in this report and it is shown how they can be accessed. Exchangers are maintained in situ
where possible. When intrusive repair is required, the exchanger is opened up. If the problem can be rectified in situ
then it is, using a mobile crane to remove the piping, Channels Heads and Removeable Covers.
If the problem cannot be rectified in situ, then the Exchanger is removed as a whole unit, or the bundle is pulled out of
the shell. In the latter case, a Bundle Puller and mobile crane will be used and the bundle loaded straight onto suitable
transport, e.g. Flat Bed Trailer. Tube bundle cleaning will take place at the Washing Area, located at the south
corner of the Maintenance Workshop. NB – the open working area southwest of the Maintenance Workshop is
not paved.
5.3 Fin-Fans
Fin fan motors in the Train are lowered onto a hand truck, taken to a monorail, and lifted off the hand truck by chain
block, mounted on a trolley. The motors are then pulled to a drop zone at on the AFC platform, where they are lowered
down onto a pick-up truck for transport to the Workshop. Other components can be accessed from walkways.
Maintained in situ, few components exceed 25 30 kg. All internals are replaceable, and it should not be necessary to
remove the unit in total. If it is necessary to remove the whole unit; disconnect and manually tip onto a trolley and roll
to exit. Due care should be taken as some panels are ‘top heavy’ and prone to toppling over.
5.5 Switchgear
Disconnect, pull out whole unit on rails or wheels and load onto a trolley or truck and wheel to the entrance where the
Switchgear can be pulled outside for lifting by mobile crane. The unit will be taken to a Workshop for assessment and
possible repair.

All are listed in this report and it is shown how they can be accessed. The access described in this report can be used
for removing and replacing external and internal components. Where there is an overhead crane this will be used to lift
items out lay them in a laydown area, or load them onto transport, where they will be taken to the Workshop for
maintenance.
For the HP MR Compressor, a ‘Bundle Puller’ will be used to remove the rotor. In this case clear away obstructions,
pull the bundle and lay it in laydown area on supports. The Compressor ‘Bundle Puller’ and ‘Supports’ are considered
as ‘Special Tools’ and are supplied by the Vendor.
5.7 Tanks
All are listed in this report and it is shown how they can be accessed. The described access can be used for removing
and replacing external and internal components.
Items will be delivered by Crane Boom Truck to a laydown area close to the tank. Here the Crane Boom Truck will be
offloaded by its crane, forklift or hand. When the item is needed in or on the Tank, it will be transported to a
convenient spot by hand, trolley or forklift. Here, the item will be slung and a crane will lift it to the tank.
5.8 Pumps
A pump is maintained in situ, and maintenance is not intrusive. When intrusive repair is required, the whole pump will
be taken to the workshop. For convenience, the pump will be disconnected from its piping, coupling, and gearbox or
motor. Holding down bolts will be removed, and the pump will be slung and then removed by mobile crane.
All pumps are listed in this report and it is described how they can be accessed and removed.
Main valves and those with difficult access requirements are listed in this report. Valves and other piping items with
easy access and obvious removal procedures are not individually addressed. A work method will be prepared,
discussed and circulated prior to any work being done. Maintenance of valves should be inline with vendor
recommendations.
In general, the size and location of piping components determines the best method of handling. If convenient, a crane
can be used to support the component while the line is being broken and then loaded onto transport. If the location is
unsuitable for a crane then other equipment such as a forklift, a chain block fixed to overhead structure or a lifting
frame can be erected over the item for removal.
5.10 Structure
It is not anticipated that structures will require maintenance themselves, but in rare circumstances it is necessary to
remove certain beams and platforms to permit the removal of pipework and valves, and the maintenance of equipment
items. In these instances, the removal will be by permanent maintenance crane, mobile crane, forklift, or chain block.
General maintenance and servicing of Overhead cranes will be carried out in situ from dedicated maintenance
platforms where available, scaffold or manlift basket, inline with vendor recommendations. Removal of major
components is highly unlikely. If required, major components will be removed by means of a mobile crane. Mobile
equipment can be located within crane dropping areas.

the Rotor and Stator a maximum of every 80,000 hours (equivalent running hours) of operation, or a
maximum of 12 years. The expected downtime of the equipment to carry out this inspection is 10 days,
and it is recommended to coincide this inspection with a planned shutdown, when cranes with a larger
capacity than 70 tons will be available on site, which can be utilized to withdraw the rotor.
Refer to the Mitsui IOM and the ABB Service & Repair Document No 3BSM 009020 for the detailed
procedure for the release/removal of coupling and ancilliary equipment (cooler top, covers, bearings, oil
pipes) attached to the Generator, and the withdrawal of the Rotor with the special tools provided.
Follow the detailed IOM procedure for lifting the rotor at its Drive End (DE) and inserting a sliding tool
between the Rotor and the Stator housing, using a 20-30 ton jack.
The Rotor is partly withdrawn from the Stator using a 50-ton mobile crane, positioned to the south of the
Generator. When there is 250mm of the sliding tool left in the stator core, support the rotor on the
platform under the ND end shield. Position the 100-ton mobile crane to the east of the Generator, rig up
and lift the Rotor off its support and out of the Stator. The 100-ton crane will lower the Rotor down and
lay it on its cradle for inspection. If it needs transporting away from site, it will be loaded onto a 30-ton
Flat Bed Trailer with the 100-ton crane.
Reinstallation of the rotor is the reverse of the removal process, utilizing the gearbox lifting lugs to pull
the Rotor back into the Stator on the sliding tool.

After emptying Transformers of Dielectric, Transformers (47000kg) will be removed with a
30200-ton mobile crane, positioned east of the Transformers, and loaded onto a 50-ton Flat Bed
Tractor/Trailer Crane Boom Truck for transportation.
