Quarter 2: Characteristics of Organic Compounds

Content Standard: The properties of organic compounds and polymers in terms of their
structure

Learning Competency: List general characteristics of organic compounds

(STEM_GC11CB-IId-g-85)

Duration: Week 5: Day 2

I. Objective:

The learners will be able to:

1) Define Organic Compounds
2) Enumerate the different Organic Compounds and its
characteristics
3) Explain how the Characteristics of organic compound applied in
everyday life.

II. Materials:
Powerpoint presentation
Manila paper or cartolina
Metacards, pictures, chalkboard

IV. Values Integration:

The learners will be able to realize that the characteristics of organic

compound are significant in everyday life.
V. Learning Tasks:

A. Activity:

1) The teacher will be group the students into four, then they will
complete the table about the uses of the compounds. Using a
check mark , the learners will indicate the uses of the
compounds . They may have more than one check mark per
sample depending on its uses/s.

Organic Compounds
Gasoline Ethanol Acetone LPG Kerosene Acetic
Acid
Beverages
Foods
Uses Antiseptics
Fuel
Cleaner

2) The teacher will be posting guide questions such as:

2.1. What do you think are the characteristics of the materials which
give their uses?
2. What do you think these kinds of organic compounds are very
important?

B. Analysis

1) Let the learners observe and analyze the presented periodic table.
2) The learners will be given five (5) minutes to answer the guide
questions.
3) The learners will be encouraged to brainstorm and work
collaboratively.
4) The learners will be asked to write their observations on manila
paper.
5) Each group will be given 3-5mins to present their work in front of the
class.
C. Abstraction

1) The teacher will verify the information generated from the groups.
2) The teacher will encourage the learners to ask queries and
misconceptions about the topic will also be addressed.
3) Additional information that would deepen the discussion would also
be discussed.
4) The teacher will highlight the following information such as:
5) Organic compounds are essentially covalent compounds.
6) They show characteristics of covalent compounds.
7) They have low melting and boiling points.
8) They are generally insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents.

D. Application

Answer the following questions:

1. What is Organic Compounds?

2. What are the characteristics of organic compounds?
3. Explain how the Characteristics of organic compound applied in
everyday life

Answer Key:

1) Organic compounds are essentially covalent compounds.

2) Organic compounds show characteristics of covalent
compounds. They have low melting and boiling points. They are
generally insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents.
3) Organic compounds have wide applications in the petroleum
and pharmaceutical industries and possess some unique
characteristics
