Lesson Idea Name: Real World Application Contest

Content Area: Mathematics - Geometry
Grade Level(s): 9-12
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE9-12.G.SRT.8 – Use trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean
Theorem to solve right triangles in applied problems.

Technology Standard Addressed:

7c) Students contribute constructively to project teams, assuming various roles and responsibilities to
work effectively toward a common goal.

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:

1st Day:
Students will begin by learning about the ratios associated with the trigonometric function as well as
the Pythagorean Theorem. Students will work on activities to work on building their conceptual knowledge
behind the trig functions and how to use them. Class activities will be hands-on and interactive to increase
student engagement. For homework, students will be asked to brainstorm real-world examples of how to use
the Pythagorean Theorem.

2nd Day:
Students will come to class with some ideas on how to apply the Pythagorean Theorem to real-world
situations. The beginning of day two will begin with a discussion about the Math-O-Vision contest and rules.
Students will get into groups of two or three and agree upon an example they want to create. I will walk
around class and make sure that no two groups are using the same example. Students will begin to create a
script describing their example. By the end of class students should have a script and a completed outline of
their video.

3rd Day:
Day three will be spent recording their videos which should be approximately 3 to 4 minutes. As a
teacher, I will be supervising each group to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to be. After
students have completed their videos, if there is time at the end of class, we will have a class discussion on
the importance of relating concepts to the real-world. I will also assist students on uploading their video if
they need assistance. Each group will also present their finished product to the class.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?

Tablet or phone with video recording capabilities

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students will be in groups of two or three collaborating with each other to create their real-
world examples and video creation. At the end of the lesson segment, students will be asked to
present their video to their class and answer any questions their classmates may have.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): They will be engaged in problem-solving and have the
opportunity to apply what they know by relating it to a real-world example. Students will be creating
and producing an original product showing their work and explaining their example.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students will be assessing their knowledge of the material and their creativity
when creating their videos. They will continue to build onto their knowledge by applying it to the real-
world example they discovered. Students will have to work together and combine their knowledge to
be able to thoroughly solve their problem.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Students
will be publishing their product to Math-O-Vision with the change to win $7,000. Videos will be voted
on by students, teachers, and members of the community. The point of the competition is to show the
community that math can be fun and exciting!

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson allows for all students to be active participants in their own learning. By working in groups,
student will be continuously discussing their ideas and knowledge to build everyone’s understanding.
Students will be assigned roles within their group in order for me, the teacher, to be able to make sure that
the students are staying on track and working together. Students may need to communicate outside of the
classroom, so they will need to make sure they can contact each other. Throughout the lesson, students are
required to complete a variety of products including audio, video, written script, etc. Because of this, students
can choose the type of product they can contribute to the most successfully. For example, students who have
trouble hearing or speaking may choose to write the script as opposed to being in the video.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:

Since this lesson idea involves internet use, I would need to get approval from my school’s principal as well as
the parents of each individual student. Also, since the products are going to be published, I must gain consent
from the students themselves before publishing it anywhere. As a teacher, I must be constantly observing my
students to make sure they are practicing a safe internet presence.

Reflective Practice:

I feel that this lesson will have a positive impact on my students learning. Both on the knowledge they gain as
well as their experience when learning it. Students are provided with a hands-on learning experience which
will give them the chance to take responsibility of their own learning. By utilizing a real-world example,
students are able to see how what they are learning applies to the world around them. By publishing their
work, students will feel a sense of accomplishment and pride when completing the assignment. Additionally,
if any of the groups win they will receive $7,000 in cash prizes!
