LESSON PLAN

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. Discuss the difference between physical and chemical change;
b. Appreciate the importance of knowledge on physical and chemical change in daily
life through citing its application in community;
c. Write at least 5 examples of chemical and physical changes of matter.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic : Changes of Matter
Materials : candles , matchstick , paper , pentel pen , manila paper
References:ScienceandTechnologyTextbook,AmaliaRina

changes.html
Process Skills : defining , differentiating , appreciating , observing and critical thinking
Value : Inquisitive mind and cooperation during the teaching-learning process.
III. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES
A. Preliminary Activities
Prayer
Greeting
Checking of Attendance
B. Review
1. What is matter?
2. What are the three classification of matter?
3. What is the difference between solid and liquid?
C. Motivation
Ask two volunteers from the class to do the following activities:
1. Tear the paper into small pieces
2. Burn the paper
3. Burning of a candle

D. Activity
1. Group Activity
2. Distribution of the activity sheets
3. Publishing and reporting
D. Analysis
1. What is physical change?
2. What is chemical change?
3. What is the difference between physical and chemical change?
E. Abstraction
1. How do you know when chemical change has occurred?
2. How do you know when physical change has occurred?

F. Valuing
1. Did everyone participate in the activity?
2. What trait did you show when you were doing your group work? (cooperation)
3. Why is cooperation is important in any group work ?

G. Application
Give each student one or two pieces of scrap paper, newsprint, or pages from old
magazines. Challenge them to work in groups to create as many physical changes
for the paper as possible. They may want to tear, cut, or color on the piece of
paper. They can crumble or even wet the paper too. Encourage students to be
creative! Afterward, have each group share a few of their examples with the whole
class. Then challenge the groups to think of how paper can go through chemical
changes. They do not have to carry out the changes, only list their ideas. Have
them share these with the class.

IV. Evaluation (Assessment

Direction: Identify changes of matter as either physical or chemical change. Write a
happy face ( ) if it is a physical change and a sad face if it is a chemical change. Put
your answers on the blank space provided before the number. Count the happy and
sad faces then discuss why it is a physical or a chemical change.
