Performance Evaluation of Artificially Lifted Oil Wells in Egypt

Author Block: M.G. Ghareeb, Future university in Egypt; S.G. El-Rebba, Egyptian General
Petroleum Corp

Abstract:
Objectives/Scope: The oil industry in Egypt began in 1910. There few fields are naturally flowing
producing and the majority are producing artificially via different forms of artificial lifts. This
based on field location and production conditions.
Methods, Procedures, Process: Sucker rod pumping (SRP) ,Electrical submersible pumping
(ESP), progressive cavity Pumping (PCP) and gas lift (GL) are the most common artificial lift
systems applied in Egyptian oil fields. Hydraulic Jet pumping system is also used. Each is suited
to certain lifting requirements and operational objectives, but there is an overlap between each
system depending on subsurface conditions, fluid types, required rates, well inclination angles,
depths, and completion configurations.
One of the main challenges facing the Egyptian oil & gas industry well as around globe is to
increase hydrocarbon production and maximize reservoirs reserves especially in the mature and
marginal fields. The continuous development in artificial lift technologies plays an important role
in solving the problems related producing these mature and marginal fields. This encourages the
operators to producing difficult wells with minimum operation problems and lifting costs.
Results, Observations, Conclusions: In 2012, the author with cooperation with Egyptian
Petroleum Cooperation and major oil operators in Egypt published an article assess the
performance of artificial lift application in most of the Egyptian oil fields. This paper will update
this study with more data and failure analysis. The current study will cover wells from more fields
in the Eastern Desert of Egypt and Sinai oil fields. The present study covering the main problems
encountered in the operation of each single system of artificial lift including the actions taken to
overcome or eliminate these problems.
