01 What's an intention

What is a successful business with

02 Allah

Can we have multiple intentions for

03 one act?

How can we transform our daily

04 routine to acts of worship?

The Commander of the Faithful, Umar ibn al-
Khattab, relates that he heard Allah's Messenger
(saw) say: "Actions are but by intentions and
every man will have only what he intended. So
whoever emigrated for Allah and His Messenger,
then his emigration was for Allah and His
Messenger. And whoever emigrated to attain
something of this world or to marry a woman,
then his emigration was for whatever reason he
emigrated."
[Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim]
Meaning of Niyyah (Intention) in Arabic
1) The wordy meaning of Niyyah (intention) in Arabic
is to have something in mind.
2) According to Islamic terminology, Niyyah (intention)
is the conscious inner motive that distinguishes the
purpose behind the action, whether it is to please
Allah (obeying Him, hoping for His reward, or
fearing His punishment) or for any other sake.
3) Since motives generate the desire to act, it is
common in Arabic to use the desire, hope, or wish
as an alternative for Niyyah.
Niyyah in Quran
Quran refers to Niyyah in some verses as the desire or wish for
something, or the hope to do something; examples are:
• “Some of you desire this world and some of you desire the Hereafter” – ‫
• “You desired the benefits of this world but Allah
desired the Hereafter” –
• “Those who spend their money desiring to please
Allah” –
• “He who hopes to meat with his Lord ”
Niyyah in other Traditions
The following are some sayings of Prophet Mohammad that shed some light on the significance of
Niyyah or intentions :
• “People shall be gathered on the Day of Judgment according to their
• “Verily! People shall be resurrected according to their intentions” –
• “You will never spend any thing desiring the reward of Allah but you will be
reward for it, even of food you put in the mouth of your wife”. –
• “And whose intention is the Hereafter, Allah will place his sufficiency in his
heart, order his affairs, and his share in the life of this world, which Allah
prescribed for him, will come to him submissively. And whose intention is only
the life of this world, Allah will place poverty before his eyes, disorder his
affairs, and he will get nothing in this world more than that which Allah
prescribed for him.”
Making Our Actions Count

Sincere According to Accepted or

deeds Quran and rejected?
Hadith
The Du’a of Abu Bakr

• The Prophet (saw) taught Abu Bakr a supplication by which we

can ask Allah forgiveness when insincerity strikes us unawares.
He instructed him to say: "O Allah! I seek refuge with you from
associating partners with you knowingly and I seek your
forgiveness for what I do unknowingly." [al-Bukhari in al-Adab
al-Mufrid]

Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and
spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and
publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish -
Multiple intentions
for one act?
Ibn Kathīr said, “The intention
reaches further than the action.”
Here are some intentions that are good
for us to make when we are reciting the
noble Qur’an:
1. INTENDING TO GET CLOSER TO ALLAH BY
LEARNING THIS KNOWLEDGE

The Prophet )‫ ) ﷺ‬said, "Allah says: ' When a slave of Mine

draws near to Me a span, I draw near to him a cubit; and if he
draws near to Me a cubit, I draw near to him a fathom. And if he
comes to Me walking, I go to him running."'.

[Al-Bukhari].
2. Intending to be successful by a business that always
bring success

Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer
and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them,
secretly and publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish -
3. INTENDING THAT THIS WORK WILL BE
COMPLETELY FOR SAKE OF Allah the most merciful.

Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to
worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion.
4. Intending to know how was the recitation of the
Prophet (PBUH), prophet (PBUH) said,

the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (،)‫ﷺ‬
5. Intending to recite the book of Allah without any major
or minor mistakes

Or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation.
6. Intending to be amongst the honorable and obedient
scribes as (PBUH) said,

ِ ْ‫ر‬ُ ‫ق‬ ْ
ِ ‫ر‬
ُ ‫ه‬
ِ ‫ا‬‫م‬َ ْ

One who is proficient in the Qur'an is associated with the noble,

upright, recording angels;
7. Intending to recite the Quran with its true recital way to
be amongst believers, Allah (SWT) says

Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true
recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever
disbelieves in it - it is they who are the losers.

The true recital is as how it was revealed by Ibn Masood (RA)

said..
8. Intending to be amongst the best people as (PBUH)
informed us,

"The best amongst you is the one who learns the Qur'an and
teaches it."
9. Intending to train the tongue upon reciting the Quran
with perfect and skillful, till it helps you to perfect your
memorization .

And there is nothing between (applying) it (tajwīd) and
leaving it, except the practice of a person with his
jaws.
10. Intending to be a caller towards Allah , as it’s the
honorable destination
"Convey from me even an Ayah of the Qur'an;
11. Intending to recite the Quran with correct recitation ,
as it will intercede on the day of judgment ,

"Read the Qur'an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters
on the Day of Resurrection."
12. Intending to achieve more rewards by reciting the
Quran in correct way, because correct recitation gives
beauty and elegance to the recitation, which makes the
reciter to recite the Quran more.
"Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be
credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold
reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a
letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter."
13. Intending to be from people of Allah , prophet (PBUH)
said,
'Allah has His own people among mankind.' They said: 'O
Messenger of Allah, who are they?' He said: 'The people of the
Qur'an, the people of Allah and those who are closest to Him.‘
From intentions for reading the Qur’aan is that we hope by
reading it we acquire a great excellence which is that it will be a
means for Allaah Ta’ala to choose us to be from His people and
those special to Him due to the saying of the beloved Messenger
14. Intending to amongst the ulama (knowledgeable
person) who carries this knowledge in their hearts
29:49
Rather, the Qur'an is distinct verses [preserved] within the
breasts of those who have been given knowledge. And none
reject Our verses except the wrongdoers.
15. Intending to know how was the praise of prophet
(PBUH) upon carrier of the Quran who recites with
perfect and correct way. Messenger of Allah ( )‫ﷺ‬had
said to Abu Musa:
ِ ِ
If you were to see me, as I was listening to your recitation (of the
Qur'an) yester-night (you would have felt delighted). You are in
fact endowed with a sweet voice like that of David himself.
16. Intending to follow Messenger of Allah )‫ ) ﷺ‬as a
role model in how to recite the Quran, As Allah Says,
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an
excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last
Day and [who] remembers Allah often.
17. Intending to know how prophet (PBUH) gave every
letter its rights and its demands to follow him and be
amongst the guided once..
And if you obey him, you will be [rightly] guided.

So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its
recitation.
18. Intending to follow the honorable companions of the
Prophet (PBUH), And those who followed them with
kindness, who transmitted the Quran to us from the
Prophet (PBUH) as its revealed
19. Intending to increase the fear /hope of Allah through
this knowledge, As Allah says:
Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have
knowledge.

“knowledge is not of the multitude of masail, but the knowledge is
that has increase you fearful
20. Intending to increase the highness towards Allah
through this knowledge As Allah says:

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those
who were given knowledge, by degrees.
21. Intending to carry this knowledge to people and to
call them towards it and to practice on it, to follow the
Prophet (PBUH)

"He who calls others to follow the Right Guidance will have a
reward equal to the reward of those who follow him, without their
reward being diminished in any respect on that account.“
There's no knowledge more greater than, to teach people the
speech of the creator.
22. Intending to take this knowledge as a mean (tool) to
teach the people khair (good), thus to receive the praise
of Allah , istigfar of angels other beings.

"Two men were mentioned before the Messenger of Allah ( .)‫ﷺ‬
One of them a worshiper, and the other a scholar. So the
Messenger of Allah ( )‫ﷺ‬said: 'The superiority of the scholar
over the worshiper is like my superiority over the least of you.'
Then the Messenger of Allah ( )‫ﷺ‬said: 'Indeed Allah, His
Angels, the inhabitants of the heavens and the earths - even the
ant in his hole, even the fish - say Salat upon the one who
teaches the people to do good.'"
23. Intending to take this knowledge as a mean (tool) to
straight the crookedness of the tongues of the people, as
its from the commands on enjoying the good and
prohibiting the evil.
And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is]
good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and
those will be the successful.
24. Intending to corporate with your fellow Muslims in
transmitting this knowledge into practice until we hear it
as how it was revealed by Allah
25. Intending to teach this knowledge to your spouse and
kids likewise every knowledge you learn brings the
closeness towards Allah, and love towards the prophet
(PBUH) and his noble companions.
"The best of you is the one who is best to his wife, and I am the
best of you to my wives."
26. Intending to recite it correctly and to remember it and
to ponder over it.
Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an, or are there locks upon
[their] hearts?
27. Intending to learn the knowledge of stopping and
starting , in order to identify and to know secrets of the
Quran and to sink in this great science.
28. Intending to know the way of written method of the
Mushaf.
22:32 - ‫ب‬
ِ ‫و‬ُ ‫ل‬ُ ‫ق‬ ْ
‫ق‬ َ

َ
That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols of Allah -
indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.
29. Intending to make people listen to the Quran how it
was revealed in soft and smooth way till their skin and
hearts be soft towards it.
30. Intending to be loved by Allah, and He be pleased
with you
31. Intending to fill our hearts with the Qur’an. The
Prophet (PBUH) said,
The Messenger of Allah ( )‫ﷺ‬said, "He who does not memorize
any part from the Qur'an he is like the ruined house.''
32. Intending to act upon each verse that we recite in the
Qur’an so that we may attain the most elevated statuses
in Paradise because the Prophet (PBUH) said,
The Prophet ( )‫ﷺ‬said, "The one who was devoted to the
Qur'an will be told on the Day of Resurrection: 'Recite and
ascend (in ranks) as you used to recite when you were in the
world. Your rank will be at the last Ayah you recite."'
33. Intending to that Allah (swt) cures the diseases of our
hearts and bodies. We should also intend that Allah’s
mercy descends upon us because of our recital. Allah the
Exalted says,

ِ
And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy
for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except
in loss.
34. Intending to have tranquility because Allah (PBUH)
says,
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the
remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of
Allah hearts are assured."
35. Intending to have that the Qur’an should become the
life of our hearts, the light of our sights, the cause for the
departure of our sadness and worries, like the Prophet
(pbuh) said in his supplication,

“O Allah make the Qur’an the spring of my heart, the light of my
chest and sight, the departure of my sadness and sorrow”
36. Intending that we want to die on the path of the
Qur’an like ‘Uthman (RA) who was granted martyrdom by
Allah )PBUH( while reciting the Qur’an. Ibn Katheer said,
“Whoever lives upon a thing will die upon it, and
whoever dies upon a thing will be resurrected upon
it”. Ibn Katheer based this on Allah’s statement:
Or do those who commit evils think We will make them
like those who have believed and done righteous deeds -
[make them] equal in their life and their death? Evil is that
which they judge.
37. Intending that our recitation of the Qur’an should be
a great reason for the increase of our Iman because
Allah, the Exalted says,

“And whenever a surah is revealed, there are among the hypocrites those who say, “Which
of you has this increased faith?” As for those who believed, it has increased them in faith,
while they are rejoicing.”
For it to increase our Īmān. Allāh says in Sūrah al-Tawbah, “And
when a sūrah is revealed, some of them ask “which of you did
this increase him in Īmān?” As for the ones who believe, it
increased them in Īmān and they rejoice.”
38. Intending of hoping for a closeness to our Lord with
love for His Great Speech.
As is in the Hadeeth:
‘Indeed you will be with whom you loved’
[Collected by Muslim]
39. Intending to follow the first command of the Allah:

The first word that was revealed in the Qur’an was a

command which says: “Read!”
In other words, the first verse that was descended upon
our beloved Prophet ṣallā
Allāhu ‘alaihi wa sallam commanded him to “Read!”
Thus, the first encounter of the
Prophet with the Qur’an was reading. Therefore you
should read. Read… read…
and read the Qur’an even if you don’t understand it. It all
starts with reading.
40. Intending to be amongst his chosen servants to
preserve it
. Allah, Most Exalted, said:
“Then We caused Our chosen slaves to inherit the Book.
Among them is he who wrongs himself, among them is
he who is moderate, and (yet) among them is he who is
foremost in good deeds, by Allah’s permission. That
)inheritance( is truly a great bounty.” [Surat Faatir 35:32]
Intending to practice everything
with pure intentions, because
pure intention transforms the
habit into an act of worship.
Intentions we should not have
1. Reading for intellectual pleasure
Do not read it merely for intellectual pursuit and
pleasure; even though you must apply your intellect to
the full to the task of understanding the Qur’an.
So many people spend a lifetime in studying the
language, style, history, geography, law and ethics of
the Qur’an, and yet their lives remain untouched by its
message. The Qur’an frequently refers to people who
have knowledge but do not derive benefit from it.
2. Nor should you come to the Qur’an with the fixed
intention of finding support for your own views, notions
and doctrines. For if you do, you may, then, hear an
echo of your own voice in it, and not that of God. It is
this approach to the understanding and interpreting of
the Qur’an that the Prophet )peace and blessings be
upon him) has condemned:
“Whoever interprets the Qur’an by his personal
opinion shall take his place in the Fire” )At-
Tirmidhi).
3. Seeking worldly gains
Nothing could be more unfortunate than to use the
Qur’an to secure, for your own person, worldly things
such as name, esteem, status, fame or money. You
may get them, but you will surely be bartering away a
priceless treasure for nothing, indeed even incurring
eternal loss and ruin.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said
that one who learns, recites and teaches the Qur’an
for worldly acclaim will be thrown into the Fire
(Muslim).
