Bernal, Reiner Van Jey C Philosophy of Law 1-A-1

1. The movie 9 is about giving humanity a second chance. It is about 9 dolls,

which were created by a scientist where the latter poured his humanity
into each doll as a last hope to save humanity against the machines that
were created by the humans as well.

2. I saw these schools of thought/theories in the movie: positivist, historical,

practice, and formalism.

Positivist – 1 implemented the rules to be followed by the dolls, no

questions asked. 1 demands obedience from the rest of the dolls, and that
the rules were made to ensure their safety and order in their small group.
Historical - Ever since the dolls came into life, they struggled for survival.
1, being the eldest, established rules for them to follow. These rules
evolved around their current situation and it took them to safety through
hiding from the machines.
Practice – 9 came into the group knowing nothing about what’s going on.
He possesses the part of humanity that is good and that is why he wants
to put the situation in his own hands in order to attain justice.
Formalism – When 1 sent out 2 to scout as sacrifice, he did this in order to
teach his fellow dolls that when one does not follow the rules, things will
not function orderly.

3. No. Man is created for good things in this world. We are not creatures of
destruction. We are created to preserve and create life.
Yes, man is innately evil. This is because this is brought out by our trait
when it comes to power. Once man taste power, they tend to abuse and
strive for it. There is an evil side for every man, but it is up to him/her on
whether or not the evil inside will win.

4. “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” Intent is different from
doing. This means that all the good intentions a man has but fails to act
upon is meaningless. When he fails to act on these good intentions, it
shows the man’s laziness. Hell contains the man’s desires whereby
heaven holds man’s good works and actions.

5. There are many and different schools of thought as there are many kinds
of people. Each person is sui generis. We are all unique by the way we
think, and how we look at justice.
In my opinion, there can never be one unifying theory because we have
our own ways on how to interpret the law. As much as I want to have only
one theory, it can never be. Having different theories explain one’s point
of view on how the law works against another’s point of view.
