Earmarks

111th Congress Earmarks: HOUSE

Members of Congress use "earmarks" to provide federal funding to companies,
projects, groups and organizations, often in their district. This database in large
part seeks to detail how the recipients of federal earmarks interact with the federal
government through lobbying efforts and campaign contributions. Readers may
now, for example, determine the degree to which people and political action
committees associated with a specific company or organization have donated money
to a congressman responsible for giving that company or organization an earmark.
The database is sortable in a variety of ways, including by House and Senate
members. It also provides detailed information on the number and value of
earmarks members of Congress have requested during fiscal years 2008, 2009 and
2010.

On this page, click

on the name of a congressional member to see
whether that congressional member has received financial
support from the interests for which he or she has sought
federal earmarks.

==========
Earmarks
111th Congress Earmarks

Earmarks
111th Congress Earmarks: SENATE

Earmarks
111th Congress Earmarks

Earmarks
111th Congress Earmarks
Comparing top recipients year-by-year is made virtually impossible by the lack of
congressional transparency on the actual recipient of defense earmark spending.
Instead of disclosing the name of the organization with the earmark funding, one
must refer back to the earmark request letter for that information. Data, once it
becomes available, will be added here on an ongoing basis. Ultimately, the lack of
meaningful access to earmark information is a strong argument for why Congress
should release all of the data in one easy to use package.

111th Congress Earmarks
Here you will find earmark recipients that also operate political action committees.
Note that comparing top recipients year-by-year is made virtually impossible by the
lack of congressional transparency on the actual recipient of defense earmark
spending. Instead of disclosing the name of the organization with the earmark
funding, one must refer back to the earmark request letter for that information.
Data, once it becomes available, will be added here on an ongoing basis. Ultimately,
the lack of meaningful access to earmark information is a strong argument for why
Congress should release all of the data in one easy to use package.

111th Congress Earmarks
When it comes to earmark requests, energy and water interests have accumulated
the most in 2010 -- more than 2,400. But military and defense interests are king in
terms of dollars and cents. Through late 2009, more than $14.5 billion in federal
dollars have been earmarked for military construction interests, while nearly $9.6
billion has been earmarked for defense interests.

Earmarks
111th Congress Earmarks
Congressional earmarks raise a philosophical debate that the Founding Fathers
originally had to cope with -- how do you give each state a say in the federal
government while acknowledging that the most populous states should have more
representation? They answered this question by creating a bicameral system with
senators representing states equally and House delegations representing population
equally. Since that time, the balance has constantly shifted, and an investigation into
earmarks can reveal imbalances in the way states -- and people -- are represented in
Washington. Use these tools to see who comes out on top: big states or small ones.

111th Congress Earmarks
While they're in the minority, some members of Congress simply don't request
earmarks. In 2010, this group includes several notable names from both the
Republican and Democratic parties, including Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Sen.
Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-
Minn.) and Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio). On balance, Republicans are more likely
to forgo earmark requests than Democrats.
